“An air of neglect”
Reviewed 8 November 2006

Stayed in this hotel a couple of weeks ago and thought it was terrible. My room stank of smoke, the double bed was two tiny single beds pushed together which came apart every time I turned over. There were cigarette burns in the furniture, half of the light bulbs didn't work and I could hear every word and movement of the people in the downstairs room. The place wasn't so much faded grandeur as much as having an air of neglect. Ghent is beautiful, but staying here ruined my stay. I was in Ghent on business and someone in my company had foolishly paid the full amount before we went, otherwise I'd have moved hotel.

We first stayed at the Gravensteen Hotel in 2003, and chose to stay there again in 2005. The first time we had a "luxury room with view" which was quite strange; it was a very, very large room with a box containing a bathroom plonked into it. The view was of the Gravensteen castle which is spectacularly lit at night. This time we went for a standard room which was still a very good size, looking out onto a pleasant side street. It was great to be able to open the windows! We know that there are more modern rooms at the back of the hotel if that is what you would prefer.

The decor of our room was rather tired, with a faded glory from the nineteenth century, updated in the 1970s. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was OK. We did not like the smoky air in the hotel's public rooms, but that is the case for most hotels in Belgium. The location is superb, two minutes' walk from the centre of the city and very close to the Patershol district where there are many restaurants and bars to be explored. There is an excellent Indian restaurant called the Moeskrahat (address: Plotersgracht 41).

I think that we will stay at the Gravensteen again.

Ghent is a superb destination for a short break. The best evening is Thursday as the students go home for the weekend making Friday night pretty quiet.

We stayed two nights, with a 'luxury double' booking. First night was a room with a view of the castle, as requested, but it was very noisy, since the room fronts on to a busy road with a tram line and lots of pedestrians. The old windows were not effective in keeping the noise down. Next night we moved to the back section of the hotel, which still had a nice view and was much quiter. The rooms are very large, but not luxurious: badly marked walls, some broken tiles in the bathroom; not worth the price overall. Breakfast was quite good. Overall, it was a tourist hotel with big rooms, a better than average tourist breakfast, but next time we will try the Sofitel and expect a true 4 star experience. The hotel has a few car parks; if you miss out you need to go to an open public car park ("Ramen") which is 300m away and about 8 Euros a day. Gent, by the way, is super.
