A beautiful, very well preserved old castle, situated on the bank of a channel.Unfortunately,it can't be visited,or at least that was the situation when I visited Ghent.

Situated near our hotel is this beautiful building with masses of history. Once a castle and also a prison madhouse and a fire station. Would have loved to have a peek inside but all locked up. Nice to see on the way to the grand port though which is a lovely area and really reminds you to wander down every street in ghent and something new pops up constantly.

Though the castle was not open for touring, it was worth walking the extra block from the other major buildings of Ghent to see it from the outside. We also saw it from the water on a canal boat ride which gave an added perspective on the design and magnitude of the castle.

In a city walk showing a friend around Ghent it is always nice to show this beautiful more hidden building. It lies literally in the shadow of the famous 3 towers but it is certainly worth while to extend your walk for about 5 minutes, and just when you think there's nothing here, it will show up.

Not as nice as the Gravensteen, but still worth a passage when visiting Ghent. You can only see the exteriors, which give a nice image of a medieval castle-house.
