This historic centre of Ghent is lovely spot for eating a takeaway lunch. We bought a sandwich close by and sat down with the locals to enjoy the sun and water view. Ir makes a nice change for having lunch at a restaurant or cafe. Within easy walking distance are public or department store toilets if needed.

Ghent is so underrated that it boggles my mind. it's bad enough that Belgium is underrated, but Ghent beats the other cities because it paradoxically combines a youthful exuberance with a medieval atmosphere. And the graslei is the 2nd best highlight. The first is the Van Eyck altarpiece. Astonishing!

This is the place where the locals go to relax and chill with a glass of wine or a beer. Just sit next to the water, watch the tourist boats and look at St Michiels kerk or the Post Office and chat with friends.

Best time to go here is in june or september. When there's still a lot of students enjoying the start or end of summer. But push them in the river if they leave trash behind. That's still a big issue. If they clean up, this place is amazing!!!

On our daytrip to Ghent, we walked from the main train station and our first destination was this attractive area. On reaching St Michael’s Bridge we walked down Korenlei and up Graslei. The lovely sunshine showed everything to great effect.

The buildings here are very well preserved, with outstanding architectural features. It was fascinating to see the houses of the various guilds including that of the free boatmen.

We took a boat trip on the canals affording us great views from another perspective and interesting commentary from the captain.
