We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in March, 2012. It is lovely. Our room which overlooked a courtyard was very big and had a separate bathroom. The room was very clean and comfortable. The staff were excellent - friendly and very helpful, especially the woman helping with breakfast - she makes the most excellent coffee.. The breakfast was superb - a huge variety of food - a continental breakfast of such quality and quantity, it would (and should) make Australian moteliers and their puny 'continental' breakfasts hang their heads in shame. The hotel has a little bar which served drinks. Very comfortable. The only downside was the thundering herd of German tourists who arrived on our last night. Luckily they didn't disturb our sleep. Quirky, different and good.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room one with a separate bathroom facing the internal courtyard

Poortackere Monasterium Hotel is a unique place: it is a hotel built on an old monastery. Have a look at the website: rooms are simply enormous, and many have nice features such as a fireplace (although clearly not in used anymore) or wooden ceilings. We were, however, very unlucky with the room we were given. We chose this hotel because we wanted to have a sense of peace and quietness while being close to the centre. However, we were given a room with views to the main street (not to the secluded courtyard), next to the luminous sign saying "hotel" and opposite to a building which was undertaking some construction works.
Net, a very disappointing experience, but we had a look at the rest of the hotel and it was amazing.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking a courtyard, not the main street. Otherwise, you'll lose the magic of...

The Monasterium Poortackere is a unique and special hotel in the heart of Ghent. Just minutes away from the historical centre in this bustling city lies a beautiful retreat housed in a former monastery. My husband and I booked a superior room in the Breedhuis after viewing the accomodations online, but upon arrival we decided to pay to upgrade our stay. The staff was happy to show us three different rooms and we ended up in beautiful Slot 3.0 in the cloisters of the former nunnery. While I cannot speak for the less expensive accomodations, our room had beautiful high beamed ceilings with a seperate lounge and spa like bathroom. It is the most relaxing place I've ever stayed and I would love to go back again. The staff was very helpful and the room was spotless.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms like the one we stayed in can only be accessed from steep staircases. Call ahead...

In beautiful Ghent you will find this hotel and guesthouse near the historical center.
It is an ok solution. I stayed at the guesthouse, and Got a room ón the second floor, in a very Dark hallway.
I asked Them to fix the light, and when it was not done they gave ne another room without too Much discussion. Some of The receptionists are very kind and some of Them seem to be interested in anything but the guests.

This is a hotel unlike any other I've ever stayed in. It's not easy to find (but sick to the hotel's directions and you"ll be fine), the receptionist is friendly in the evening, grumpy and simply overstretched in the morning, rooms are huge with more than a whiff of the early 1950s (and not much heating power than a VW Beetle from that era!), the breakfast room has bags full of charme. A good place for a stopover on your way from/to the ferry ports or Eurotunnel or anyone wanting to visit the sights of Belgium while staying somewhere less obvious than Bruge or Brussles.

We booked two rooms at this hotel, one for us as a couple, and another for a single friend. On arrival, we were very concerned about the general state of the place, it looked dark, dingy and old. We were first shown to our friends room which was up a very small set of stairs which was in desparate need of updating. The room itself was awful - it looked like the bedding had not been updated since the 70's, the curtains were hanging off the wall, the carpet was dirty and the bathroom had mould in it. There was a tv on the wall that looked like it was about to fall off and when I sat on the bed, it was so low and soft I couldn't image sleeping in it!!!! it was just so awful that we didn't even go to look at the second room and decided to leave straight away.

We went to reception to tell them the room was not sufficient and certainly nothing like those shown on the website. To add insult to injury we were refused a refund.

I know this was once a monastery but it certainly hasn't been extensively modernised, the room we were given was not even up to youth hostel standards and the costs certainly do not reflect this

We booked this as a last minute deal and we're really amused to be staying in a former Monastery! The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful in giving us excellent sites to visit whilst staying in Ghent. The room however, left a fair bit to be desired. It was very sparce and basic and as soon as you got out of the main corridor and entered the rooming area in one of the wings, the cold drafts hit. With twin beds pushed together it was an interesting stay - we are glad we did but it wouldn't be somewhere we seek out again. Parking was convienient but you did have to pay extra for that.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms in the pictures looked amazing, so it might be worth paying a bit more to stay in...
