Stayed at this hotel as it was recommended as the closest hotel to a conference I was attending at a Gent University building a few hundred yards away. In fact most, if not all, of the guests were attending the same conference.

I have mixed feelings about this hotel. It was certainly different, as it is based on an old monastry, and has all kinds of interesting rooms and corridors. My room was large, with a large bathroom, and comfortable bed, overlooking the rear yard. However, just near my room were two shower rooms, to cater for the smaller rooms with no bathrooms, and I could hear the water running quite loudly whenever anyone used them, particularly early in the morning.

I did not have breakfast, as it was provided at the conference, but at EUR 17.50 it seems to be on the expensive side. I do not believe they offer lunch or dinner, but plenty of restaurants within 5 minutes walk. Free hotel WiFi which was quite useful, and parking for EUR 10 / day, which was reasonable.

I get the impression that this hotel caters for groups as its main market, and whilst I would/will stay at it again for next years conference, I am not sure I would use it for say a weekend break in Gent with the family. It is also not cheap, uinless you take on of the basic rooms.

One member of staff who absolutely stands out and who is a credit to the hotel is TIm, a guy who was helpful, friendly, spoke at least 4 or 5 languages and who dashed backwards and forwards between reception and the small bar and who was a mine of information on restaurants, bars etc.

This hotel certainly stands out from the crowd - for better and for worse. On the positive side this hotel has a lot of personality, really good service from the helpful staff and a large comfortable room. The location is also good, central and yet hardly any traffic noise. The breakfast was excellent but of course not worth the ridiculous 17, 50 EUR. On the negative side the bathroom had a really strange layout with the mirror well separated from the sink. There was also a lot of noise from the corridor and since some of the rooms have neither shower nor toilet there was a lot of walking in the corridor with a few hours silence in the middle of the night.

This place is very close to the center of the city. This accomodation is actually quite basic, since you will sleep in the cell of a nun, but the experience is very nice! I was also able to sleep there paying a very reasonable price. Actually, I have not tried the breakfast, because it seemed to expensive to me (15 euro per day), but all the rest is absolutely great!

We spend one night at the Monasterium with about 20 people. The staff was very friendly and the rooms are big enough to stay there with 2-3 people without being to camped. The rooms were clean and the location is close (10-15 minutes walk) to the old town / center. Since breakfast is a little expensive we didn't choose this option.
For one or two nights this hotel is perfect to explore the old town of Ghent.

This former monestary is very nice and quiet. It was initially hard to reach from the train station beacause we didn't understandvthe tram system. At the train station take the "Flanders Expo" tram to Veldstraat. It is only a 2 block walk from there. Our room was plain, but clean. The bathroom was great and you could access WiFi from the room ( not always the easiest thing to do in European hotels and hostels). We did not stay for breakfast as it was quite expensive and we needed to catch an early train. The reception staff was nice and helpful and spoke English. The area is only a 5 minute walk to the historic district and St Bafs.( St Bavos).

Room Tip: There are no lifts in one wing. We had to walk up 3 long flights of stairs with a lot of luggage.
