“Very disappointing”
Reviewed 22 August 2010

Our stay at the hotel for one night was promising, when looking at the nice website, pictures and picture painted on the website. However, disappointment took over soon after arrival. Poor rooms, very poor rooms when looking at the prices (140 Euro's per room per night), a non-working shower, a non-working bedlamp, dirty carpets, very oldfashioned use of colour in the rooms. Locations is so so, no too far from the center, but there are better hotels at these prices as far as location goes.
Service was somewhat slow, however staff tried to make the most of it.
I would not recommend this hotel if you have another option!

The photo's and description of the hotel promised a delightful end to our holiday in Europe. However, we were somewhat dissappointed as whilslt the room was clean it was very basic. The bathroom was somewhat to be desired with poor quailty flooring covering and a handle that came off the wall when getting out of the bath. We had to change rooms as our room as it was very noisy throughout the night - although in fairness it was that last night of the ten day festival. The other room was fine but the toilet handle was broken. The advert states that one can dine in the restuarent but we found it was cloesd weekdays. The staff we good and breakfast was fine

It is listed as a 3 star, however, there are actually 4 different hotel units on the premises. We were put in the 1 star "Breedhuis" unit, even though we paid for the 3 star advertised hotel. First of all, there was no A/C. The room faced the street and we could open the windows for air, but it was so loud we could not sleep. The shower didn't drain, although it was fixed, the bathroom floor was rotten. The room was dusty and moldy-smelling with cobwebs in the corner. The beds were uncomfortable. It was more like a dirty youth hostel than a hotel. We were told that we had purchased "the special" and that the hotel was full because of the festival. Regardless, the average price per night of our room was about $100. I think that Expedia needs to revisit this hotel and get a guarantee that guests, no matter what they pay, will receive the 3-star accommodations that are described, and not put in a bait-and-switch, smelly, old, noisy hostel.

We’d booked this place having read of its former life as a convent, and fully expected a basic, simple room. As it turned out, our room was in the more modern Breedhuis, with ensuite bathroom and TV, so I suspect that we were upgraded.

It’s not the cheapest option in town, and the €15 breakfast appeared overpriced (we had ours elsewhere), but it is located on the western side of the centre, and the staff were very helpful.

The fast in-room wi-fi was a real bonus, and the room itself was very spacious and well laid-out. The one downside was the noise from the doors when people in adjacent rooms came in and out, which undermined the otherwise quiet environment.

We’d probably consider other options if staying in Ghent again, but it was a perfectly good overnight stay, all the same.

If you are looking for something more than the faceless chain hotels, this is the place to stay. Its authenticity and charm and character made it a unique, wonderful experience, especially since visiting Ghent is so much about immersing oneself in history. There were all the conveniences needed, our room was clean and huge, with a loft, which especially delighted the kids! Breakfast was wonderful, and the hotel grounds themselves are worth a visit - there is even a lovely chapel right there. Would definitely recommend it.

If you want the Hilton, go there; if you need a fat cotton bathrobe in your closet go elsewhere. Spouse and I had a fine friendly visit of four nights -- with NONE of the noise, service, or amenity problems noted in other reviews. Simple rooms, fine (European-style) beds. A five minute walk to the tourist center of Ghent, but on a smaller street. Hotel gave us a bike for the day: wonderful way of seeing the city.
