“great service, great campsite”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

On our trip through Belgium and Luxembourg this was the only place we stayed two nights and it was a nice experience. The service is brilliant, you're given everything from bus time tables, maps, tips and a smile without even asking for it. There is a small shop convenient even if a little on the more expensive side, a bar and a chip shop on site, the wash machine and dryer is around 4 euros and is working well. One BIG advantage is that you don't have to decide straight away how long you want to stay, you pay when you leave. If you leave after 12 you'll pay for the next night, but that seems pretty fair!
The tent sites are all separated by hedges allowing a lot of privacy and there are several shower and toilet blocks, which are reasonably clean. The bus into Ghent leaves every 20 minutes or so and stops right in the centre. Blaarmeersen is also the last stop on the way back so it's an easy journey (buy your tickets in advance it's cheaper than on the bus, but best get an all-day ticket). I'd definitely stay there again if I wanted to go to Bruges, especially if the weather is nice since Blaarmeersen is a recreational area with a lake!!!

Arrived Sunday and staff were quite good at booking us in, site was good, and close to Toilet and wash facilities.
Decided to eat at the restaurant, service good staff friendly and food quite good and reasonably priced but on this night as with other nights restaurant closed early even when people were sitting outside having a quiet beer, never once did it close at the prescribed time.
When enquiries were made for Wi Fi tickets, the brochure said office the office said shop the shop said tomorrow, we never did get WiFi but if as it says "4 star camping" couldn't WiFi be free in the restaurant area.
There was a funny smell in the toilet block(2) near to our site and the ladies toilet did not have any paper towels or dispenser fitted at all. Each day the cleaning staff did little more than fill the toilet roll and paper towels holders if you were lucky enough to have one.
The sites themselves were very good lots of space and privacy with hedges around them, Blaarmeersen is close to town and a regular bus service leaves from the complex every half hour. There is some road and rail noise during the night but not enough to deprive you of sleep. take some mosquito repellent and bite remedy, they were quite vicious during out stay.
Ghent is a fabulous place and the best city i have ever been in to be able to relax, enjoy walking around the sites and streets with plenty of street cafes and bars to have a drink or meal.
Purchase the City 48 hour City card and you can travel free on buses and trams for the duration of the card plus you get a free boat trip and believe me it is worth doing.
Would i use Blaarmeersen again for another Ghent visit, yes I would, generally the site is good, staff friendly and it is well placed to get around not just Ghent but other parts of Belgium too. just sort out the niggles and then you will deserve the 4 Star rating

I love this site. Pitches are very large and separated with hedges. The facilities have been upgraded since we were last here in 2011 and the showers are very good now. Small shop with fresh bread and pastries every morning and a good selection of beers, on site bar, cafe and takeaway. The location is perfect for families that enjoy water activities as a five minute walk from a wonderful lake and beach with lots to do in safety and a bar for mum and dad to sit and watch the kids. Gent centre is an easy bike ride or walk away or the bus stops outside the site. The staff are very helpful when booking over the phone and on site and provide lots of information about the area. There is road noise as the site is close to major roads, and also trains. Hence no perfect.

The bad: the toilets were really smelly and there was a significant amount of traffic noise day and night.
The good: the pitches were a decent size, regular buses to town centre and main train station and the on site restaurant was reasonable.
We had 3 nights at this campsite as we wanted to visit both gent and bruges. As a base it was perfect. The 2 buses ran every half an hour and were reasonably priced. The shower/toilet block was dated and the showers were the press button type so if you were lucky the water stayed on for 30 seconds, if not so lucky about 5. As someone with long thick hair to wash this was a bit of a nightmare. Even after the block had been cleaned there was a really nasty smell to the place.
The pitches were defined by hedges so there was an element of privacy. We had 2 pitches in the bay of 3. We were chatting and listening to music, not loudly, and were asked by management to keep the noise down. This was at 10pm. So not recommended for social groups.
There are alot of sports facilities on site which we did not use but other campers we spoke to had and were impressed.
Was fine but I was glad we were only there for a few nights.

We were greeted warmly and the staff speak English. This site is situated within the Blaarmeesen leisure complex although the caravan site itself is in a separate section. The site is separated into different sections and each pitch is large and has a hedge around for privacy. We couldn’t get Astra 2 UK satellite reception. There were trees around so maybe it was just our pitch. We did see caravans with satellite dishes up so there must be some reception from some of the pitches.

There are various shower blocks around the site. The main one seems to be S1 which also has the laundry. The showers are clean and free with loads of hot water. There are 3 large washing machines and 2 huge driers. They always seemed to be busy. The electricity is 6 amp and is switched on from reception. If you overload and it trips out it can only be turned back on from the reception. It is charged per kwhr.

There is a well stocked shop and a nice bar and restaurant on site. We ate at the restaurant and found the service and food quality good and reasonable price. There is also a take away and chip shop behind the restaurant. There is a bus from just outside the park that runs every 20 minutes into Gent. We did walk into town one day but got a bit lost and it took us 1 ½ hours to get in!! We later found the best way to walk in is through the leisure complex, past the man made beach and along the canal. Even then it would probably take at least 40 to 50 minutes. The man made beach is along the side of a lake and this also has a bar and cafe. This would only be around a 5 to 10 minute walk from the site.

All in all it is a well run site and would recommend it if you are visiting Gent.

We booked a week camping only to find that the pitch we were allocated was still occupied, no problem was reallocated we were told just to plug our electric hook up it worked for 2 days but on 3rd day it failed. This was rectified. All in all I feel that the staff are a bit disorganised. The facilities(toilets and showers) are not well kept. They are clean as only few people were there using whilst we were there. I think if it's peak season then beware. Please beware that some people smoke in these facilities which is quite which is quite odd in Belgium, someone was even smoking something that did not appear to be a regular cigarette. As far as as noise it was Ok, you would expect road noise and trains whilst camping. The campsite is about 15-20 mins by bus to the main town and train station. You would need a prepaid ticket to ride the bus. The bus time tables given at the campsite office is not reliable (as advised by the camp staff). There is a bit of smell of sewage near the Fritshop. All in all it was good value.

Room Tip: Pitches are separated by hedges which give much privacy.

Stayed here for four nights last week. Large campsite in the middle of park/sports facilities. The pitches are large and surrounded by hedging which give a good amount of privacy. We were camped next to a wash block, which would have been good if the ladies toilets hadn't been out of order! There are a few wash rooms throughout the site some with more facilities than others. They were an ok standard -cleaning standards could have been better. The sinks for washing up were good-ample and nice hot water. The showers were warm and never had to wait for one. The location of the site is great. You an get a bus into gent or the train station from the site. Gent is about 20 minutes by bus, the station about 10. The site is a little noisy with a motorway behind the site. It is also popular with groups of younger people and we were disturbed by a group during our stay. Over all it's really cheap with good faciliities close to gent. Worth taking a walk around wider site-large lake, beach, woodland etc.
