The location is very nice, the interior is very nice, but the food is excellent! Where do you get a 'croquet' with real fresh Dutch shrimps. Pealed by grand mother? Nowhere but here. The quality of the products is well chosen and the people that run this place love their food and take preparing serious. Go and have a look!

This modest looking restaurant gave us one of our best evenings in Ghent, even though we were the only customers eating that night.

Service by the proprietor was lovely. We weren't in any rush and she got the balance right - giving us the privacy to relax and enjoy the meal. She translated the menu into English for us. Carpaccio and sole were excellent, the chef obviously sources ingredients very carefully. This was also true of the small touches where other restaurants can cut corners: great bread, salad, house red. We considered it very good value.

The restaurant is very small, as it's in an old house. Downstairs there are two or three tables, upstairs a few more. Fully occupied I doubt it seats more than 24 people, so bigger groups should probably book in advance.

Other reviewers are calling De Rave "off the beaten track". It's just one street away from the main tourist spots. Ghent is a city for walking in new neighbourhoods: I highly recommend you make the effort. (Also - if you visit at lunchtime - there's a great looking chocolate shop directly opposite)

We just returned from an outstanding meal at De Rave! We read about it in Trip Advisor and were looking for a place near the public transportation routes with good food. As others have noted it's on an unobtrusive street a few short blocks from the Belfry. At first we were afraid that it might be closed since many of the restaurants in the area aren't open on Sunday. But we were glad that it wasn't!

The restaurant is in a historic building and gets its name from the carved stonework Raven that used to be used instead of a numerical address in earlier times. Inside, the decor is rustic, muted but tasteful and comfortable. Only a few other people were dining when we arrived but when they left, they made a point of telling us that we were in for a treat.

The service was prompt and the server/owner was very personable and translated the menu into English for us on the fly. We had a carafe of one of the house wines -- as good as any bottled wine we had had during our time in Belgium. The food was excellent! After an initial tasting of bio tomatoes and goat cheese with tasty bread, we enjoyed our appetizers (sea bass over noodles with pesto, shrimp croquettes) and main dishes (Belgian chicken, sole). All were moist and cooked to perfection. For dessert the fixed price menu included fresh cherries, vanilla ice cream, sponge cake and chocolate shavings with an artistic presentation resembling a classic still life painting. The cream brûlée was outstanding with a crisp top (with no hint of a burnt taste).

Overall, we had a memorable dinner at De Rave and would recommend it highly as a first rate restaurant.

Just had a great break in Ghent and the icing on the cake was a final meal at De Rave restaurant. The small restaurant is just off the tourist trail. You can find it just behind the Belfort Hotel (turn right out of the Belfort Hotel, and right again down a narrow street called Schepenhuisstraat2). It's at the bottom of this street on the corner. The menu is in flemish but the waiter/owner speaks excellent english and is attentive and helpful. It's not cheap but the food is to die for. I would recommend the menu + supplement at 58 euros: a wonderful aperitif, white wine with the fish and red with the meat and coffee afterwards.

Tucked away away from the main tourist spots, this restaurant is quite superb. My wife and I were visiting Ghent for a weekend break, accompanied by four friends. We were wandering round on a cold, showery afternoon hoping to spot a suitable venue for our evening meal later. We stopped outside the corner premises of De Rave ("The Raven") and the man who we were later to discover was the owner and most hospitable server / waiter came to the door, gave us his business card, answered our questions about items on the Flemish menu and took our booking for our dinner table.
All our various dishes were beautifully cooked and presented. Our host was attentive and friendly but never obtrusive, and he took time to ensure that we understood exactly what we were about to order. The talented chef is his partner. Prices were moderate as were those of the good wine selection.
There were just six other diners during the time that we were in the restaurant; it deserves to be busier. If any of our small party returns to Ghent - as we may well - we will undoubtedly want to re-visit De Rave.
