This was the first time I experienced a concept like this. We were a group that started with a boat trip where champagne was served and our guide told us about the sights we could view from the canals and the river. Then we started on the walking tour with some stops for historical sights and we entered the first restaurant were a table was booked for our starter, which was baked fish. Very good taste. Then we continued our sightseeing walk with our guide, who took us to the next restaurant, where we had the main dish, now meat. The place was quite small, so our group filled it all. We had wine served with the food both places. Next, our guide continued the walk with us, again stopping at interesting places, and finally we entered the third restaurant, where we had dessert, coffee or other drinks after own choice. I did not take any notes of the names of the places, but I enjoyed being in the group and I certainly liked the concept of combining sightseeing with meals at different restaurants.

Hour and a half tour within short distance but plenty of history and jokes/gibes. Chance to see interesting architecture in context.

Wonderful City full of beautiful buildings. Before you wonder about too much, get on a boat trip tour to find out what's what in Ghent. Would recommend an open air boat (if weather permits) they are not as wide and can go further. The tour last about 45 mins and is worth every cent of the €6.50.

it was planned to do this city trip together with my sister, so early morning she called in with her husband. It was actually a short drive to Ghent. We putted the car under the Vrijdagmarkt and we started our walk from there. Ghent has a big history and the first statue we saw was "Jacob van Artevelde" in the centre of the square (Vrijdagmarkt). Jacob was a political leader in the 14th century. He stayed neutral in the English/French war and brought welfare to Flanders by selling textiles to England. It's one of the most important leaders in Flanders' history. From there, we walked trough the shopping street "Langemunt" direction "Groentenmarkt" where we took the left to cross the bridge and so arrive at the "Gravensteen". When you visit Ghent, the "Gravensteen" is an absolute MUST to visit. It is a castle, actually a fortress, dating from the Middle Ages. If you ever want to feel like a real knight ... this is the place to be! You must be able to walk well because many steps, stairs and small corridors on uneven surface. You need to count a couple of hours to visit this place and I really mean, it's worth it!
From there, we walked back to the "Vleeshuis" across the bridge and there we took the right for walking beside the water. There you can enjoy the view of the big houses with facades in step style. And so walk direction "St-Michiels kerk" (St Michael church), with the unfinished towers. At the bridge we went left. crossed St-Michielsplein and then left again direction "Korenmarkt" . That square is central point for taking tram to any area in the town. By then, we got hungry and we had a lovely dinner in Restaurant "Peking" at the Korenmarkt. Very good value dinner!, need to say that. After dinner, we visited the St-Nicholas church where a book fair was going on. This is also house to well known paintings from great Belgian artists. To Finish our trip, we went to " 't Dreupelkot", off the Kortemunt (Groentenmarkt), for a quick shot. Finaly we walked to "Het Patershol" times ago was that the poor area. ... Ghent ... has a warm feeling ... town to love ...

I would like to visit this city again n again.. it was just amazing and I felt so welcoming as soon I reached the station and went to info counter for the first time..
Everyone speaks English so well, which is really rare thing one can expect in different European cities specially a small city like Ghent... I never expected that bus and tram driver could speak english based on my past experience in German cities.. So a plus for global tourists...
Then about the city.. you can discover so sooooo many secrets in the historic centre.... imagine the life of the locals in 14th century... and feel it actually...
and the beautiful view of river all over the city adds so much of serenity to it... it was one of my most memorable and wonderful experiences..
In one line: If you go to Belgium, Visit the Small cities and not just the capital...
