“Big room, great view, great value despite a few issues”
Reviewed 6 September 2012

The location was perfect. Right in the heart of Gent. We had a surprisingly large room on the top floor overlooking the spire- and belfry-filled skyline. The view was fantastic. We really liked having a king sized bed instead of two singles pushed together, and it was a comfy one. Also, good, fast, and free WIFI. Request a high floor room with a good view. Gent has a truly remarkable nighttime skyline.

Now the issues (all very fixable and probably temporary): Water pressure in the shower fluctuated greatly, even turning off sometimes for 30 seconds to a minute (was a surprise to the front desk, so maybe it was an isolated incident). One night the cleaning staff left the windows open during the day which let in lots of mosquitoes. We were up at 3am killing about 20 of them so we could sleep. Also, there was a bad smell in the bathroom that made us think something might have died in the wall. It wasn't a very strong smell, but it was noticeable. Despite these setbacks, it was still a very good stay, and these were all things that are easily fixable by hotel staff.

Room Tip: Request a high floor with a good view. Also, request one bed instead of two singles pushed together...

We stayed for two nights- one double, one twin bedded room on first floor over the courtyard patio. Rooms very clean, spacious and air conditioning worked well. But what about the breakfast......definitely the best of our trip ( Belgium, Germany and Switzerland)! Plenty of choice and the pastries/cakes were exquisite. The receptionists were really helpful - booking restaurants, looking after our luggage. Definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Although no view, the patio rooms are very quiet

My partner and I stayed here for 4 nights in June 2012. We arrived at 2.50pm and asked for our room and got told that it wasn't ready yet and that the earliest check in time was 3pm (only 10 mins away). We were told to sit and wait and they'd let us know when it was ready. At 3.30pm (30 mins after earliest check out time, we asked again and she phoned someone and told us it was ready. While we were waiting the young man dressed in a suit who was obviously the evening receptionist and due to take over from the girl was wandering in and out chewing gum like he was a cow chewing grass with a scruffy friend wearing a backpack following him from room to room (not a good impression).
Our room was on the top floor and had some sort of water pipe that made noise every time someone lower down used their water. My partner snores very loudly and I wear ear plugs and can usually sleep through anything, but this kept me awake all night! We complained in the morning and they moved us to "a quieter area of the hotel"
Our second room was really nice and so.....quiet. It was at the back of the hotel across a little courtyard and was on the lower floor with only one room directly above. The silence was wonderful....unitl 7.45 am! Luckily we had already been woken up about 7.30 am by a massive thunderstorm with torrential rain and thunder, so when the hammering started we were already awake. At first we thought that maybe it was an emergency repair and that the ceiling in the room above had leaked and they were fixing it so we didn't say anything. When we left for the day we did think it strange that the whole window seemed to have been removed in the room above.
3rd night (2nd in new room) 7.45 am hammering and drilling!!! So much for the quite part of the hotel. We complained about the noise and was told that the builders weren't supposed to start work until 9am!
4th night (3rd in new room) - morning - no hammering, no drilling, no water noise - lovely, up until the cleaner knocked 2 raps on the door and just walked straight in without waiting for us to answer! I can't remember what time this was but it was probably about 10am. We were just about to leave, but obviously not quick enough for them! First good nights sleep but 'get out' lol!
Only reason this review got a poor and not a terrible is because the second room was nice and clean and the receptionist (the morning girl) was helpful.

Room Tip: We had 2 rooms and both were bad because of noise. One was at the front and high up. The other was...

I was interested to read your valuable feedback and was sorry to learn that you felt that my reception team was less than helpful and welcoming. I always thrive in providing the best guest service and I offer my apologies for falling short on this occasion.
As for the building work, and although it is a bit too late as far as your stay with us is concerned, please accept my sincere apologies and I can assure these events are not regular event
I have only very recently taken on the management of The Hotel de Flandre and rest assured your comments have been taken on board. Furthermore the hotel is undergoing a major refurbishment which includes all bedrooms, new bedding and all the public areas.
Yet again I appreciate you taking the time to bring these matters to my attention; it only allows us to be able to improve and please do not hesitate to contact me personally at stephanies@hoteldeflandre.be

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights11th and 12th July. as a party of 8, we were given a
executive room on the first floor at the rear of the hotel, which was accessed through the
small court yard at the back of the hotel.
The rest of our party were given rooms on the ground floor of the court yard.
all of these room looked out onto walls no view at all. but then again you are in the center of Ghent
Our room which was very large, decor was fine bath room was very large,
there is a mini bar in the room, as we were only in the room to change and sleep it was fine.
As this was a Euro Star cheap break. you are not going to get the best rooms
which would be at the front over looking the street.
This hotel is in a great position as the center of Ghen is only a 5 minuet walk away.
On arrival at Ghent station we found Nance with an 8 seater taxi
all for 8.5 euros great value and called her for return.

Room Tip: Room at the front of the hotel

Good location, close to the old part of the city with the river flowing by.
Clean rooms, we had one on the ground floor with direct acces to the patio-very nice.
Breakfast was perfect: a big variety of fresh bread, loads of cereals and nuts, fruit and other pastries.
Friendly staff.

Room Tip: Patio side, ground floor.

The good first impressions began with a very friendly receptionist, who apologised for our room not being ready, (we were early), but she did show us somewhere safe to leave our suitcase, so that was OK. As the hotel is situated near the centre of town, finding somewhere for lunch was easy. So far so good.

Things got better when we were shown the room. It was on the ground floor, just off a small courtyard. It had all the usual amenities, air-conditioning, room safe, mini-bar, decent size flat screen TV and large bathroom. Along with a reasonable amount of wardrobe space, it was all looking very good. Better still you get FREE wi-fi. That's one of the reasons why we didn't revisit the hotel we stayed in, the last time we were in Ghent. The hotel De Flandre is only a stones throw away and (IMHO) better value than the big chain competitor, just a few yards up the road.

I did have a couple of small personal gripes. If you like soft beds, you're in for a treat. If you don't – you’re in for some uncomfortable nights. Second, I can understand why the power goes off when you leave the room and remove the room key, but why do the sockets in the bathroom, need the light to be on to work? If you think this is an electricity saving measure, it’s not because the light was simply left on all night. This strange situation was evident with some of the other electrical sockets. It felt as if the hotel was deliberately trying to deter you from using any electrical outlet. There was a wall socket easily available but it was at floor level and directly on the bathroom "flight path". Leaving a device there overnight to charge, risked it being kicked or damaged. Come on people, it's the cell phone and iPod age, we need to charge stuff.

Breakfast is 'only' €20, which again, is cheaper than its mega-chain neighbour. We didn't try it, as there are so many places within walking distance and we're not big eaters at breakfast. Nevertheless, breakfast does seem excessive when we got two cappuccinos, two fried eggs with wonderful bread and butter for €14...for the both of us, just off the Korenmarkt.

In conclusion, the hotel de Flandre is definitely somewhere worth considering. There was a considerable price differential between staying there and the Marriott just round the corner. If you then vector in the fact that the Marriott charges around €7 more per person for breakfast and over €10 a day for the privilege of accessing the internet, then price differential gets even greater. Much as I liked the Marriott, the extra it charges makes the de Flandre my first choice of the two hotels.

Room Tip: Rooms off the courtyard are very quiet.

We stayed in Hotel de Flandre the first week of Janusry.
Location is just perfect, everything it's "round the corner", we had a room with views and the staff is frendly and helpful.
Charming rooms, good and generous breakfast, wifi on the rooms, definetely a great choice I would recommend to anyone visiting Ghent.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with views to the Cathedral or old town
