“Delightful hotel in the centre of Ghent.”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

Stayed here for a few days with my daughter to visit the Christmas Market. Stayed in Bruges many times and decided to have a change. We were very glad we did. Ghent is a superb city and has a very attractive medieval part. We chose the Hotel de Flandre as it is extremely close to the medieval part and there are plenty of restaurants close by. We booked an Executive Room but were upgraded to a Suite which was superb. There was a lovely sitting room with a sofa-bed, a spacious king sized bedroom, large bathroom with Jacuzzi Bath, large washbasin and separate shower, and a separate toilet with washbasin. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was an excellent choice of food at breakfast, hot and cold buffet and my daughter loved the pancakes. The hotel is beautifully decorated and the standard of cleanliness is extremely high. It was very cold when we visited, but the heating in the hotel was excellent. I hope to visit again with my husband.

Room Tip: Higher floor.

Very good hotel in the center of Ghent. Modern decorated and everything new. Don't expect a very luxury environment but everything you need and want is available. The rooms are comfortable and large with a good bathroom. The breakfast buffet is good value for money (16 Euro per person) and the staff is very helpful. All the major important tourist attractions are on walking distance, including all kind of good restaurants. Enough choice. Across the street you will find a supermarket (Spar) and 3 minutes from the hotel you can park your car in a public garage for Euro 10 per day.

Room Tip: If you get a room in the lower back part, ask for a room on the top floor. The wooden floors can be...

Spent two days in the ugly motel apartments at the rear of the attractive exterior in December 2013. The rooms are mostly constructed of glass and they are absolutely freezing (I mean Freeeezzzzing!).

(Please read other reviews as this problem of freezing cold rooms comes up with a number of guests)

We reported the extreme cold on the first night and were told the heating had broken and were given extra blankets. In the morning the reception were unaware and didn't seem too bothered (presumably a usual complaint they are tired of hearing). They said they would send someone to fix it during the day. It was working when we got back, but then went off again providing for another cold December night in a room made of glass! We therefore got to spend two nights in terrible conditions.

When we complained on departure we were told to email to obtain a 'small refund' but the email came back saying that the heating works fine so they will not even provide a token refund as they claim the heating works fine. They refuse to address why they were unable to get the heating working on the first night or why the problem repeated on the second night.

I have never been treated with such distain having my comments dismissed (all dressed up in nonsense PR language such as ‘we appreciate your feedback’ and ‘we pride ourselves on customer service’). It is astounding that they have a 4 star rating.

I would avoid this place like the plague. The management are all niceties but hold their guests in utter contempt!

We spent 4 nights (from 4th Dec) at this hotel. The staff were very friendly on arrival and the booking in was very efficient. We had booked an executive room and these were situated in an annex a short walk across from the main hotel. This was a building with an old exterior but very modern inside. The room was large but sort of open plan with the toilet, bathroom and bedroom all in the same area separated walls that did not go to ceiling. There were no doors inside the room.
The rooms were very warm and the air conditioning could not be set to below 17⁰C so making sleep very difficult. As it was winter we tried opening the window but this made matters worse as in the annex atrium was a machine which made a very noisy blowing noise every minute or so. We would have asked to move to another part of the hotel had our stay been longer.
We could not fault the rest of the hotel. The staff, food and service were all of a high standard.
We did make a comment about the problems we had experienced on the hotel feedback form, and I'm pleased to say we got a very positive email response from the management.

Room Tip: Don't choose the annex

We stayed here for four nights. At the time of booking we requested two double beds. Check in was painless but on arrival at the room across the street we found only a double bed. This room was well equipped.

What I did not like was that the bathroom was only a sectioned off area of the room. There was not a full wall. Any bathroom noises would have been heard.

We contacted reception about the double bed. After a few minutes they came to us and advised we were being moved.

We were very happy about this. Even more happy when we discovered we were to be in room 500 which is a one bed apartment.

The room was well equipped with bedroom and modern bathroom. Water pressure was good.

There was a separate kitchen and large living area with big dining table comfortable chairs and a sofa bed.

Bed linen was clean and of good quality. There was a large flat screen tv.

The hotel is very central near restaurants etc.

I would recommend this hotel. If taking a European adapter ensure it has a hole for the earth. One of my adapters would not fit the sockets. Also there were mosquito repellers in the room. I assume Ghent has an issue with mosquitoes in Summer. No issues in December though.

After reading some recent reviews I was a bit worried but I was pleasantly surprised as was travelling with friends for the Christmas market. The girl on reception was very helpful, our room was very spacious, clean and comfortable. The shower was powerful and the bed was clean and very comfy. It is so near to everything, shops, pubs and restaurants. The buffet breakfast had plenty of variety of cereals, fruit, breads, meats, plenty to suit everyone. There was tea, coffee and hot chocalate in the room as well as mini bar. Would definetly go back there and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: I asked for a quiet room. We had 336 at the back,it was huge, had shower and bath plus bathrobes. Di...

Things got off to a tricky start - turned up to find the booking hadn't been communicated properly and we'd been given double rather than twin rooms. It's common in Belgium to have a double bed that splits into two twins but these were doubles proper. Initially reception said they couldn't help until the next day as no spare rooms but after some resistance from us agreed to see what they could do. After a short wait other rooms were found and we went out for the evening. On getting back our bed still hadn't been split, but the linen was there so were able to split it and make it up ourselves.

Parts of the hotel were nicely done, but our room, on two floors in the roof space (bathroom downstairs, bedroom upstairs) had some dilapidation (eg headboard lights had to be propped up). Bathroom though had clearly been refurbished and was of a high standard other than the rust coloured water when we first used it. Great view across the Ghent rooftops though.

Breakfast was adequate and a typical continental spread. Some very nice and dainty small cakes were a highlight. There was just enough seating with the one room operating and plenty when they opened up the adjoining room.

Overall a pleasant hotel in an excellent location - just a few minutes stroll from the historic centre of Ghent - but perhaps it needs to complete its refurbishment and just up its game a little to warrant the full four stars.

Room Tip: Make sure you are clear if you want a twin room.
