“Book only with a promotion”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 December 2010

We stayed at the Hotel de Flandre for 1 night. We booked the room with a promotion coupon in a magazine.

Don't be fooled by the "double room", you get twin beds ! The size of the room was OK, the bathroom was very big, there could have been easily a bath and shower, but there was only a shower.

The twin beds are OK, but very very soft. It's a little bit like you're sinking away.

In my opinion this is a good hotel if you book it with a promotion, like we did. So you won't feel like you paid to much for what you get. If there's no promo I would book another hotel, because it's not worth that much money.

We stayed here during the Ghent 6 day. The hotel is just a 5 min walk from the tram stop . Our twin room was across the courtyard and had all the facilities you would expect, except for Tea/coffee making and a dedicated English channel on the TV. Breakfast was included in our deal, an extremely comprehensive buffet. The breakfast room staff were particulary obliging. The only real downside is that WiFi is expensive, but there's a MacDonalds just a few mins away. Will stay on our next visit to Ghent.

We stayed at the Hotel de Flandre as part of our European honeymoon adventure and had a very comfortable stay. We were housed in one of the lofts, which boasts stunning panoramic views of the city. The breakfast each morning was delicious with many options from which to choose (further, the hotel is directly across from a grocery store, which proved convenient). We did not imbibe at the hotel bar, but were happy the option existed!

The hotel is well-situated with shopping, restaurants and cultural sightseeing opportunities in the nearby Historic Center. The city itself is easy to navigate (with the trusty map provided by the front desk staff) and we were able to walk to all points of interest.

All-in-all, we enjoyed our stay in Ghent and were impressed by this beautiful hotel and its wonderful staff.

We stayed at the hotel de flandres for 2 nights for my husband's birthday. We stayed in a standard room which was situated at the back of the hotel in the courtyard. It was a lovely modern, very nicely decorated room with a gorgeous big bed and lovely furnishings. bathroom was good - great shower and nice toiletries.
We had breakfast included in our rate which was really nice - better than i had expected with croissants, toast, eggs, cereals and nice cheeses and meats.
the staff could be friendlier - they weren't rude, just not overly friendly. but that's the only negative to the stay!
location was fantastic - 2 minute walk to the best bits of the old town. Parking nearby was very cheap - only ten Euros for 24 hours which i thought was brilliant value.
Would definintely recommend this hotel and Ghent in general - brilliant place.

We had constant problems...

The hotel looks great and if your staying in the main section fine.. If your out the back, the problems start. The room was overheated - so we went to put on the Air-con - did not work and they refused to put it on. Staff were rude and un-helpful. Only a boy behind desk and no manager available for whole weekend.

They claimed that the air-con had to be turned on in all rooms due to Network... Crazy. 4 star hotel and no air-con. We were told we could not open the windows which were locked so had to sleep with the door to the room wide open. Room was SO HOT!

Room was dirty - contact lenses on the floor - dirt in bathroom.

Would not recommend - there are FAR nicer places in Gent.. Dont bother with this place.

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I had a courtyard room for 5 nights. The room was very large with 2 single beds, 2 armchairs, a large wardrobe, desk and chair. The bathroom was huge too - well equipped with nice toiletries, a steam/shower that was a real treat, plenty of soft towels and a proper hairdryer (not one of those that's like a mini-vaccum). The hotel seemed quiet and there was no noise at all from other guests. Staff were efficient but not overly friendly. I didn't have breakfast but ate from the great, cheap Spar supermarket across the road. The only downsides were the lack of English TV stations - I only had BBC 2 in my room - and no free wifi/ internet. I would stay here again.

I’ve stayed in this hotel twice recently. The first time on the 2nd floor which was ok (good enough to book a second stay in this hotel). The second time I stayed on the 4th floor, which turned out to be one of the worst hotel experiences of my life.

In short: the partition walls and sealing are very thin and poorly insulated which means that the hotel is very noisy (neighbourgh's voices, squeaky doors and floor boards). As well as people in the corridor, there’s a room on the 5th floor and every time the person above happened to walk (which he/she did quite frequently during the night) it felt like someone was skipping rope beside me. It made sleeping impossible. Our room was tiny, just enough space for a double bed and a shower, and I found it difficult to believe that I was paying the same price (£100/night) as I had when I stayed on the 2nd floor (double bed+desk+sofa+wardrobe+bath&shower). There were many little things wrong with the room, which you wouldn’t expect when you pay a premium price for a 4* hotel (shower door was broken and wouldn’t close, there was a gap between the base of the shower and the floor, the sink wasn’t straight, some of the electrical sockets weren’t properly fixed on the wall, the main door was jammed and needed a good kick to open, stained carpets etc). Because it was on the 4th floor, it got really hot (even though it wasn’t very hot outside. The air con was so noisy that we couldn’t use it, and opening the window meant breathing in the smell from the gutter (right by the window, and full of cigarettes buds) and also waking up with the first rays of sunshine (since there are no curtains) and noises from the street (delivery at the Spar shop facing the hotel start from 4am every day.

Overall the hotel is a little dated. For example, it’s hard to believe that the old lift still works. Some of the lights in the corridor weren’t working. One thing to mention is that the reception staff was very poor. I stayed there twice and every other time I needed to speak to someone (check in/out) the desk was empty. No matter how many time I rang the bell. I once asked the reception desk if they could recommend a local pizzeria, and they were unable to do so. The first lady had no clue, her colleague either, and when they looked in the yellow pages they pointed me towards a restaurant 40min away.

On the positive, I’d say that the hotel is reasonably clean, breakfast is ok and it’s a good location. But I would not recommend it because it’s overpriced, dated and most importantly one can’t get a decent night sleep! If you think it’s worth compromising because of the location, don’t! There are other hotels nearby where you’ll probably get a better night of sleep (Marriot is only 20m down the road) and looks a lot nicer.
