Alphabed
Ranked #21 of 116 Ghent B&B and Inns
Reviewed 7 November 2008

We had one night in Ghent and based on the reviews here we chanced the Alphabed B&B. We weren't disappointed. On arrival there was no-one there but a note instructed us to call the owner, which we did, and as he was at work in Brussels he gave us instructions on how to let ourselves in and told us to make ourselves at home and help ourselves to the tea/coffee in the kitchen - we really liked this freedom and it was absolutely no inconvenience. He'd also left us a map and some other brochures which was great.

The B&B is in an excellent location for exploring Ghent on foot (which is easy as it's not a big place!) - really couldn't be better unless you're in a hotel in the centre, but we would prefer this little charismatic place over a chain hotel any day and it was very reasonably priced. It has three ensuite rooms and we were in the ground floor "Romantic" room - it was modern, clean, comfortable, unfussy and had nice touches like a chocolate on each pillow. Great shower. We met the friendly owner at breakfast and he supplied us with lovely food and good strong coffee.

Can't possibly finish this review without mentioning what a fabulous place Gent is for a romantic break - breathtaking architecture and history, friendly locals, great food (and lots of choice) and, of course, an abundance of superb chocolatiers. If you're going to Belgium don't opt for the obvious, give this place a try - you'll fall in love with it. Don't miss seeing the sacred lamb portrait at the jaw-droppingly lavish cathedral which had a live harpist playing as we wandered around, or the view from the belfry at the other cathedral, or the reflection of the buildings in the canal at night.

We stayed in Alphabed for three nights and it was the best place you could imagine. Clean, modern, tastefully decorated and close to the market and other main sights. Breakfast was nice and well-balanced, with a little fruit bowl to start with, followed by eggs, dry-cured ham, good quality cheese, fresh rolls and croissants. Compared to other Belgian B&Bs and hotels we stayed in, this one was the best value for money.

I stayed 5 nights at this brand new B&B in Ghent and was very pleased. Ghent is the perfect place from which to explore Flanders; a charming, compact town that isn't overrun with tourism, it lies in the center of everything else you'd want to see, all of which can be easily reached by train. From here, I made day trips to Bruges, Antwerp, Brussels, and Maastricht.

Location: Alphabed sits on a safe, quiet side street, just 5-10 minutes walking distance to the Sint Baafsplein and all of the main attractions. A grocery store, coin laundry, and two convenience stores are all located on the next street over (Sint-Jacobsnieuwstraat). It's 5 minutes away from Bij Sint-Jacobs, where you'll find a bar called the Trollekelder, with an excellent selection of great Belgian beers. For trips outside of Ghent, it's a safe 15 minute walk to the Dampoort train station or you can catch the #1 tram at the Korenmarkt to Sint Pieters train station. A taxi from Sint Pieters runs about 9 euros.

The B&B: This is a small, three-bedroom house. The design is minimalist; the rooms are very bright, spotlessly clean, and simply furnished. You'll need to bring your own toiletries for the bathroom; also, there is no telephone, television, or internet. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful; bread, cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt, Ganda ham, cheeses, orange juice, coffee or tea.

Staff: The owner, Marc, is very nice and can offer lots of good advice. He is not on site, but comes by in the morning to make breakfast and can be reached by telephone during the day.
