“Overall not up to our expectations.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2009

We stayed 3 nights at The Big Sleep in mid October. We were the only guests at the time. We had the big room at the back with TV and small fridge. Shower cubicle in corner with basin next to it. Room was quiet and clean except for a few cobwebs on the ceiling. Although up two flights of stairs we did not find this a problem. Having the toilets across the landing was OK as we had them to ourselves.

The parking was very convenient just across a canal and only 3 euros a day.

Tasty breakfasts of cereals, bread, rolls, cheese, ham and preserves were already laid out when we came down. Flasks of coffee and boiled water for tea were on the table.

We only saw Michaela Delbaere three times during our stay as she was busy with a job and her family. Our room was not made up, beds made or towels changed once during our three night stay. We queried this and she told us the custom in Belgium B&B's is to make up the rooms every 3 days but she usually does it every 2. We checked out this 3 days' room service at the local Tourist Info and they were not aware of it. However, Michaela apologised for not tending to the room on the second day owing to other commitments and gave us a bottle of wine.

The large room was quite cold as the two radiators only came on at the system's preset times. Furniture was very basic. Two well used chairs in the room. No mats just polished floorboards.

We spent two nights here is May 2009. It seems to be called The Big Sleep now.

Strange set up with the toilets being separate but it was ok and I've seen similar in a hotel in Amsterdam.

The stairs are a pain if you have heavy luggage. The room was adequate and of a reasonable size.

Location was quite handy about 3 mins from the railway station (not the main station but Gent Dampoort) and about 10 mins to the centre of town.

The breakfast was adequate and the host was very friendly.

The main issue we had was mosquitoes. Despite having the windows shut we managed to kill 10 of them on the first night and 5 on the second (despite having a plug-in mosquito repeller on the 2nd night). Needless to say we did not get as much sleep as we would have liked.
The guests in the other rooms had no problems so I can only put it down to the fact that there was a swimming pool that was outside our window. The pool was not in use judging by the amount of slime in it so I assume the mossies were breeding in it. I would suggest that the owner perhaps invest in mosquito screens and/or ensure the pool is empty in the times of the year it is not is use.

The price was reasonable but I would not stay here again.

Ghent is a very good place to visit though and probably the nicest and most interesting place I visited in Flanders.

On a recent trip to Belgium, we had trouble deciding on a place to stay in Ghent. Nothing stood out for us, in either the hotel or B&B listings. I ended up looking through a Belgian website for B&B's in Ghent, and contacted several possibilities. We decided on the (Trip Advisor unrated) B&B operated by Michaela Delbaere, in a quiet, canal-side location about a 10 minute walk from the center of town. She offers three rooms in a beautiful building built in the later 1800s, with unbelievably high ceilings. However, be warned that the guest rooms are up two long flights of stairs (remember, those high ceilings!), so if you aren't prepared to deal with the stairs, don't even think about it. Two of the rooms are enormous, with a king bed (two twins very tightly held together), and another separate twin bed. There is tons of empty floor space, and perhaps larger groups might be accommodated. The third room is somewhat smaller, and has only the one large bed. Each room has its own ensuite shower and sink in a little enclosure. There are two toilet rooms just outside, off the same hallway landing as the three rooms. Everything is spotlessly clean, and decorated with furnishings and treasures from their travels in Asia/India. There is a little fridge is each room. The breakfast is served at one long table in their dining room on the main floor, and is generous, although does not offer any cooked eggs, sausages, etc. The bread/croissant baskets offered a good variety, fruits, yogurt, cold cuts, and an exceptionally cheese plate certainly satisfied us. Other than at breakfast, their private quarters have their doors closed, which some people might find a bit impersonal if their idea of staying in a B&B is sitting around visiting with their hosts. All in all, an excellent value for 55 Euros a night for two people. Michaela has a two-night minimum, and if I remember correctly, requests no smoking in the rooms.

  • Liked — Spacious rooms, good bed, cleanliness, location
  • Disliked — No screens on the (very large) windows might be an issue in mosquito seasons (although nobody in Europe seems to screen their windows!)
  • Tips/Secrets — Don'e be shy about asking Michaela for local information; there are some great little restaurants within easy walking distance.
