Ghent Marriott Hotel
Ranked #4 of 38 Hotels in Ghent
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 15 August 2012

If nothing else, this Marriott ranks as one of the most well designed hotels to fit its environment I've ever seen. Approaching by car, you drive to a dead end to a nondescript entrance. Once inside, the lobby opens up to a fantastic windowed atrium. However, when you walk out the other side of the hotel, you are in the epicenter of the medieval area of Ghent. That facade, has been beautifully preserved with a modest "Marriott" sign showing you the way home. Shops, cafes, restaurants and bars are within 100-200 meters of this entrance.

The rooms were very comfortable and well appointed as any Marriott would be. Views were of a small alley and the building beside it, so we kept our blinds drawn most of the time.

The staff was extremely helpful and made most reservations for us for meals. It was vacation time (after the big Ghent festival) so many restaurants were closed. They were very patient tracking down a suitable place to eat every night. They also directed me to a public parking lot around the corner from the Marriott which was 1/3 of the price of the hotel parking lot.

Check-in and out was a breeze. The staff's English was excellent and I heard some staff speaking multiple languages with ease. For the price, I'd have to say this is one of the best deals that Marriott has going.

Room Tip: Don't worry about the room. If you are spending time there, you are not walking around Ghent or...

Having stayed at the Marriott hotel in the beautiful city of Ghent before we decided to stop for one night on our travels through Europe. The hotel was just as good before and I can find nothing to complain about it from either stay. The staff at the hotel speak English fluently and are extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are very well sized, clean, modern with very comfortable beds. The hotel is very well situated in the middle of the city meaning it is very to access any part of Ghent which I would thoroughly advise as it is a beautiful city. I would not hesitate to stop at this hotel and would highly recommend it to anyone staying in Ghent!

The Ghent Marriott is well located in the city center. This makes it difficult to navigate to it and our auto GPS seemed to have us going in circles. Eventually you see a city center sign, the a Marriott Hotel sign. It is a modern hotel built up against existing buildings. There is a glass enclosed lobby and underground parking. The desk staff is extremely friendly and helpful.

Our room was compact, but modern and clean. The air conditioning functioned well. The was comfortable. The bathrooms are modern, although with many of the hotels we stayed at during our month long trip, you have to step up over a tall tub to get into the shower. While some might prefer old fashioned and classic, in this case I will take modern, clean, functional and comfortable every time. One of the better Marriotts anywhere and a great place from which to explore Ghent.

Stayed here for 2 nights last weekend and i cannot fault the hotel whatsoever.

Welcoming was very good, the porter was friendly, he assisted us with the car park, reception staff were also very good on booking in.

Rooms were comfortable, spacious and very clean...cant ask for more! Slightly noisy trying to get to sleep (our room was near the river) but only due to the annual carnival outside.

The breakfasts were very good, fantastic selection...the waffle maker is a must try! Although on the sunday morning we couldnt eat the streaky bacon as it was so salty!! it was clearly visible on the bacon!

All staff we communicated with were excellent, friendly and very helpful.

Just a quick note, I wouldnt recommend going when the carnival is on, the city has a completely different vibe and atmosphere, its dirtier, messy and noisy! We went to Brugge on the way back to the tunnel for a few hours, i would go there easily before i go to Ghent again!

The hotel offered free wifi which was good, overall very impressed with this hotel.

Room Tip: The higher your room, you get a good view of the city as the side of the hotel is just glass, we wer...

I was in Ghent for 5 days and got a good package deal at this hotel that included breakfast. Behind the beautiful historic building facades along the canal, it is a very modern and comfortable Marriott, with the quality you would expect. The breakfast buffet was wonderful and the restaurant very nice, with large windows over-looking the Korenlei-Graslei area. It is in the very heart of the best part of the city and within walking distance of the major attractions and nice neighborhoods. Stay here if you can afford it!

We stayed at the Marriott in Ghent for stopover of one night on our way to Paris from the Netherlands. It was suggested by our Dutch relatives as a good alternative to Bruge as we had been there before. It was fantastic! The city is full of amazing things to see, such as St. Bavo’s Cathedral (make sure you see the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb), St Michael's bridge, Castle of the Counts and many others.

I am a fan of Marriott hotels, but this one is a bit of a nightmare to find if you are driving, even with GPS. Ask the hotel for the best directions, as we continued to get stuck on one way streets and pedestrian only zones. However, once inside, the hotel is situated in a perfect central location on the Korenlei. We didn't use our car once as all of the attractions were within walking distance. We were travelling with our 3yo, so wanted a room with some space for a fold up bed and a bath. We initially chose a room with a view but the view was of rooftops and not much view, so we changed to a room facing the inside foyer that was beautifully quiet and large. Thanks to the glass walls in the foyer, we never felt closed in as there was so much light when we left the room or had our blinds open.

The staff were extremely helpful to meet our needs and answer our questions and were always polite.

There is a restaurant on site and many others within walking distance. The foyer in the hotel is also pleasant to sit and have a drink/snack and/or read the paper. It was very cold and wet when we were there but we still ventured out for dinner and it wasn't too bad. I imagine on a nice day it would be magical.

As per other Marriott's there is wi-fi in the public areas but not all rooms unless you pay or are a member.

The shops weren't open when we arrived as it was a Sunday. However, we did walk around and I felt you could definately spend a couple of days at least to do them justice. There is Zara and H&M and other well known European brands.

We will return to this wonderful city and suggest you do too. The Marriott will again be our choice upon our return.

Room Tip: Ask for directions to get to the hotel if driving as the car park is a the back and the front is ped...
