“Great Location, nice rooms”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2012

We spent a day in Ghent which is just a lovely little town. Very quaint and lots to see.
The hotel is right on the right and it is a unique mix of modern architecture blended in with medival walls/charm.
Check in was efficient the room was nice, clean, well laid out.
Within 5 mins you are by the castle, the main square or the old church.
The hotel has free wifi in the room which I absolutely love.
Like many other hotels in Europe they require you to activate the lift with your room key which is a bit of a pain, especially if you are staying longer than 12:00. (Get your key rekeyed on your way out in the AM).
There is also a Spar store within 3 mins walk where you can get tons of Belgium chocolate and other goodies at reasonable prices.

Room Tip: Ask for a riverview if possible and higher up

The hotel is a typical Marriott, really, but one that has been excellently maintained and is perfectly clean, with gorgeous big beds, lots of pillows and well equipped rooms and bathrooms. I stayed with my boyf, my mum and another friend of ours and we all had great rooms and slept really well. Had lovely cocktails in the lounge downstairs too. The hotel is in a perfect location for exploring Ghent, and breakfast was fabulous too, although it's not cheap! The staff were all helpful and spoke good English which is a plus for us! The only tiny criticism is that it's ever so slightly lacking in character, but we'd definitely choose to stay here again.

You couldn't be more central in the tourist areas of Ghent than you are at this hotel. We were treated well the moment we checked in! If you are as lucky as us to receive a room on the river you are in for a treat!

Room Tip: Be a Marriott Gold Member...it pays off well here!

I love this hotel. In an amazing location. Very comfortable beds and rooms. Architectural gem. My only gripe (a minor one) is that if you are checking out late you room key is cancelled which means you cant use the elevators. You then need to stand at the desk to get your key re-programmed (had to stand in line for 30 minutes this time).

Second visit to this hotel. The room with the river view is worth the extra euro´s. The view is iconic. You can imagine how people lived here 500 years ago. The room is soundproof, no opening a window, but the airco prevents the feeling that you choke. Bed good. Bath large. Still no coffee machine. Location superb for shopping and sightseeing. Recommended.

Don't punch the Korenlei street address into your GPS, use Drabstraat sreet address. A lovely location in the heart of a beautiful city. rugges. A smart travellers better option than going to Brugges. City is lively late at night unlike Brugges.

Room Tip: high up is good for great internal view of atrium

A very pleasant hotel in the middle of everything in the old heart of Ghent. Easy to find on public transport (the Gravensteen tram stop is the nearest for the No.1 from the station). Lovely entrance on the canal into old facade and then inside it's a huge modern glass roofed atrium with internal balconies from which the rooms are accessed.
For security reasons, it seems you can only get upstairs via the glass lifts which you can only get to move by inserting your key card. It became a game of chance as to when or if this would ever work, and a great source of international discussion and amusement as you found yourself unable to go up or down with travellers from all over the world.
The rooms were good quality and large with big beds, plenty of clothes space, chairs, desk and table, tea and coffee and biscuits, good bathrooms and free wifi. The linen was good though not pure cotton which I had expected. But from our room and many others there was no view - there must be a very limited number that look over the canal, and perhaps some more that were high enough to see over the roof tops - we had a blank building with metal shutters to look at. As we had a good special rate from Hotelopia we didn't feel we had the clout to ask to move.
Breakfast was an excellent buffet, though the sausages were a bit anemic looking and had few takers - but a good range of high quality hot and cold including smoked salmon and pastries, breads, cereal and fruit etc. And the breakfast rooms were at the front of the hotel and benifitted from the canal side view which could have been made more of in the rest of the hotel. The guy in charge of breakfast was brilliant which was good as some of his younger staff seemed a bit dozy and not good at seeing tables cluttered with dirty plates or completing table settings with everything that was needed. And they are desperately in need of a good toaster. The one they have does a terrific job of turning bread into stiff beige coloured leather, but toast in the morning would be nicer.
The reception staff were all delightful and couldn't be more helpful.
