“It used to be a brothel!”
Reviewed 29 August 2013 via mobile

Got a good deal - but two nights get one free. Didn't realise how well placed the hotel is. Right by the old city centre and loss of great bars, sights and restaurants close by.
Beware of car parking - €23 per day - there are 2 car parks in close walking for €10 per day.

Hotel staff pointed this out and let me move my car out of hotel car park within an hour without charging me.

Oh, and it was a brothel in medieval times

I have stayed at this hotel at least 2-3 times per year over the last several years, and must say that it is a terrific choice for staying in Ghent.

Service: From the check in, the staff is friendly and accommodating. Haven't ever had an issue with a room that was booked the night before for early am arrival from the states, unlike other hotels in Europe sometimes do. Any laundry needs are taken care of quickly and efficiently.

Location: As others have said here, just an ideal location, right along a canal, an easy walk to almost everything (including multiple chocolate shops). Greate cafes and restaurants, a never ending choice nearby.

Quiet: You will want a canal room for the view, but if it is during the summer, be prepared for noise from the crowd of Belgians hanging out until the wee hours. Interestingly enough, if quiet is what you want, go for one of the rooms along the corridor which overlooks the lobby (kind of an atrium sort of setup).

Restaurant: Had all three meals there. Can get crowded at breakfast, but the buffet is a European style, with eggs and bacon as well, so it has everything you would want. Pricy for lunch and dinner, but lovely food and wine.

Workout Room: On the -1 level, the workout room is dark. Make sure you turn on the a/c if you go down there early in the am, as it gets hot down there.

In all, wouldn't stay anywhere else. Would even consider staying in Ghent for this hotel rather than in Brussels.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet night during the summer, don't request canal view unless you are a heavy sle...

Had 3 nights in a standard room at this August - a hotel which could not be better placed to visit the medieval city of Ghent. Staff very friendly and helpful, free Wi-Fi (a plus over many Marriott's around the world) and the usual high standard of room in terms of bed comfort, cleanliness etc. Also a excellent breakfast. Having arrived by taxi at the front door the "wow" factor was to walk out the riverside door. We found the 48 hour city card for 25 Euros gave us very good value if you are into the churches and the excellent museums - I also includes a boat trip. Overall a very good weekend in the Marriott and the city only let down by a drunken party on Eurostar in both directions and the low standard of the Brussels Eurostar terminal.

Room Tip: Riverside rooms cost 60 Euros a night more - we found the standard room more than satisfactory.

Ghent is our first destination in Belgium trip. Staying in this 5-star hotel in this lovely little city, make my whole trip memorable.

The canal is just outside the hotel, and we took the boat cruise, just steps away from the hotel. Then visit the churches, all within walking distance.

There are many restaurants and bars around, so you don't have to worry about dining out.

And the hotel breakfast buffet is excellent. If you are lucky enough, you may get the table by the window with the view of the canal.

The hotel was situated in the centre of town overlooking the river. The historic facade disguised a very modern hotel with all the usual Marriott standards. Free upgrade to a junior suite ensured superbly furnished accomodation. The location meant that we didnt need to move the car durind our three day stay. We could walk everywhere. I could not fault the stay.

Ghent is absolutely stunning and this hotel is a comfortable base from which to explore it. Staff we extremely accommodating and within minutes of our booking being made over the telephone and us arriving our room had been set up with a cot and it was fantastic. Although we were situated near to the lift we didn't hear anything all night and as promised we were given a lovely quiet room. Breakfast the next morning was extensive and the children enjoyed making their own waffles, we also sat in a breakfast room overlooking the canal, just perfect. Thank you Marriott, we arrived feeling very crumpled and stressed after our previous accommodation had overbooked and our stay with you, although short, was comfortable and as relaxing as it could be with small children.

Don't let the photo fool you, I expected an historic building, but the Marriott is very modern, with an open cafe/lounge in the middle. The rear entrance is what you see in the photo. Our stay unfortunately was at the beginning of the annual summer festival. I'm not a crowd/fair type of person, I avoid them whenever possible. Had I done my homework better, we would have taken a pass on even going to Ghent or at least just stayed 1 night instead of 3. I got a buy 2 get 3 night prepaid deal. The rooms are typical for Marriott, and large for Europe (from our experience). It was a 10E taxi ride from the train station. our room was not ready, so we left our bags and walked around the canal and city center. Very nice location. We did however see all the setting up for the upcoming festivities -- a band stage right across the canal, food/drink stands being set up, and an outdoor urinal right next to the Marriott (no porta potties in Europe?) The Marriott is close to alot of bars -- many don't serve food. It's not hard to find a place to eat -- it was hard to find the entrance to some of the prime canal front restaurants.

We weren't able to sleep due to the concerts being held next door, again, my fault in not researching better. Location is great , otherwise this is an average hotel.
