“Another good stay”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

A return visit to this hotel after a few years confirmed our previous good thoughts about it. Position on the river is unbeatable, enabling you to walk to all the main sights and restaurants. Check-in was efficient and friendly, room was fairly standard but very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was spotless, with a good, simple to operate, shower plus large bath and nice toiletries.

The large, comfortable and airy atrium area was ideal for early evening drinks for which the service was very pleasant and helpful - the staff all seem to be able to converse in multiple languages - and was well patronised, giving it a nice buzzy atmosphere.

Didn't eat in the hotel as there are multiple food choices within a very short distance - we would particularly recommend Korenlei Twee, just by the bridge to the left of the Marriott.

Would certainly choose this hotel again, despite the high-ish price tag!

If you go by car currently you ll have some problems navigating the city until the hotel, city is currently under road repairs and some roads are shutdown for car traffic. Me and my girlfriend got lost and had to park the car far away...result...drag bags for about 1km until the hotel. The hotel has splendid location and beautiful facade, with friendly restaurants nearby. Check in was made swiftly by Frederic, certainly one of the most friendly and professional receptionist i ve met. The hotel has nice premacies, according to a 4 star. Good buffet. Certainly recommended.

Room Tip: Hard to navigate the city if you go by car.

I started reading Lady Mustard review below and suddenly feel like I have nothing to add. I also "had booked a short break in Ghent for a special birthday treat [for my wife]. Ghent is charming (despite almost continuous rain on our visit) but I was disappointed in the Marriott." So I will still try to add my own touch. We have visited Bruxelles, Liege, Anvers and also Bruges that we loved but had never the occasion to go to Ghent together. In Brugges, I often booked too late and ended up in small "no-brand" family hotel that we all appreciated (see my reviews). Here, given the occasion, I booked upfront, called several times to ensure the resevation was OK etc...Based on the reviews and of course, the big Marriott name, I thought I could not go wrong. Now the facts: hardly greeted at check-in, no welcome drink, no help to take the luggage (or do you only get this in 5-star maybe?). I had asked for a room with a view on the canal (like everybody I guess) but it was not possible, the room was nice but a bit oldish with wood furniture that could have used renovation, the bath tube did not look shiny and fresh and there was plenty of dust on the shelves of the mini bar. Apart from that, good sleep, quiet, no noise. The wifi also worked well. The breakfast lacked variety and quality; the pastries tasted like they came from a factory rather than from a local boulangerie (bakery). There was a nice little spot for the 3 of us in a room with the view on the canal but somehow they must have wanted to keep it (though it was not reserved) for other guests as they tried to place us in the back room. But after I asked for this table, they finally sat us there as it was free. But the worst in the breakfast was the service: not that anything bad happened but the atmosphere was everything but relaxed. All the waiters were tensed, in a rush to let people out to have new comers sitting, they walked fast, strong steps, not a smile, we did not have a quiet Sunday morning breakfast as we had expected. We litterally felt rushed out. Before closing the review because it does not deserve too many words, I want to mention the two people that contributed to improve the picture: a young trainee that delivered our cappucinos; in the chaos of the breakfast, I had the feeling he was actually trying to deliver us a good service, thank you to him. The driver was helpful and friendly and lent us an umbrella to go out visit even after we had checked out: much appreciated. As a conclusion, I will say that hotels are a hospitality business...and this is what we did not feel at Marriott Ghent: the hospitality.

Room Tip: Well I have no tip on the rooms apart from the fact that you should try to get one on canal side, do...

Because of our work travel, we stay in Marriotts quite often for business. However, for our vacation to Belgium we wanted to stay in the types of places we had never been before. But, when we started researching where to stay in Ghent we realized that this is THE hotel in the area. Once we got there, we absolutely understood why. The best part of the hotel was the amazing location- tucked away along the canal, near some of the best attractions in the city. Food at the hotel was great... there is no concierge lounge for Gold and Platinum members but we received a voucher for free drinks and appetizers at the bar and free breakfast. Keep in mind that the address for the hotel will not get you there with a GPS if you are driving, as the street address is only open to foot and bike traffic. Actually, driving in Ghent is an altogether terrible idea and was pretty stressful. We never did find the parking for the hotel, so we parked at the parking garage by the church next door. It turns out that the parking there is much less than the hotel, so it all worked out. Overall, it was a great stay!!

I had booked a short break in Ghent for a special birthday treat. Ghent is charming ( despite almost continuous rain on our visit) but I was disappointed in the Marriott. This quite expensive hotel is really quite ordinary. Granted, the facade of the hotel on the Ghent waterfront is spectacular and , as other reviewers have commented, the location within the town is very convenient for sightseeing and eating. I realised from the website that a large modern hotel had been tucked behind the ancient frontage and was looking forward to seeing some inventive architecture and design. What the designers have created behind the unique 17thc townhouses is a bland 'corporate' looking space that could be anywhere. It neither references its context, nor creates something interestingly new. Our room was ' deluxe' but not one of the more expensive ones on the waterfront, so overlooked a wall. The window allowed in little natural light but did let in the light from the streetlight opposite at night. The interior of the room was like that of a bland motel: soulless dark veneer furniture, tan carpet, white walls. Nothing to indicate where you were. Bathroom grouting was a little cracked and mould-stained, toiletries basic. The window could not be opened. I had hoped that there would be a lounge that made use of the river views. However, there is no view from the lounge: if you are lucky you get a window seat in the restaurant at breakfast before the business conference crowds descend. Good points were crisp high thread-count white sheets, (although quilt was far too warm for stuffy room,) kettle and tea making equipment in room,( but replenishments had to be prompted.) The breakfast was good and plentiful too, and the breakfast staff - especially the women- polite and helpful.
We don't often stay in ' chain hotels'; now I remember why. I wish I had had spent my money on a smaller, more characterful place.

This hotel is a great find. Ghent is a quiet small historic town with not alot of traffic compared to Brussels. It is right in the middle of Ghent and you get the best of both worlds because you get the modern and historic aspects of Ghent. You are a short 5 minute walk to all the shopping, bars and restaurants. Ghent is about 30 minutes from Brussels or Bruge which means that you can take a day trip there by car or train.

Room Tip: It is worth upgrading to a room on the canal side of the hotel as the view is beautiful.

This is a fabulous hotel that combines old and new, turning an historic hotel into one with modern conveniences. It is located on a canal and is a short walk to restaurants, bars, and shops. The rooms were large and comfortable. We were in Ghent for New Year's Eve and drank our champagne from the hotel outside along the canal. There were many other revelers making it one of the best and memorable New Year's Eve celebrations we have ever had. The city of Ghent is charming and well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the canal.
