“A hidden treasure in Ghent, you must have experienced it.”
Reviewed 20 April 2009

We were very surprised of reading these negative reviews; when we arrived we had such a lovely welcome in hotel verhaegen. It was personal en we had immediately a nice feeling of being at home “ away from home”. At the same time we were overwhelmed of the beauty of this building, pure 18th century and with the most beautiful objects decorated. Even now being at home I have the feeling I still haven’t seen everything!
Our bedroom was like a dream, we had a large room and bathroom with bad. We had a real four-poster bed and we were looking over of a typical French garden when we had our late afternoon aperitif of rosé-champagne of the minibar. One of the owners brought us an ice bucket and two glass, the moment was complete and we enjoyed the moments on our luxury room.
Hotel Verhaegen was situated in the centre of Ghent, although we had no disturbance of noisy traffic and it was possible for us to do everything by feet. We think Ghent is a really lovely city with a character, we can surely recommend both!

We booked the Hotel Verhaegen for the Valentins weekend and explicitely stated, that we would have to book a room in a separat hotel for acompanying friends. After receiving the confirmation of our booking we also booked the other hotel. One day afterwards we received a call from the owner of the Hotel Verhaegen, that our room was not available anymore since they had made a mistake. They did not even give any excuse and were really unfriendly. At this time the whole town was already fully booked and we did not find any alternative accomodation and could not cancel the other hotel any more. The Hotel Verhaegen declined covering the costs for the other hotel and was terribly unfriendly. I have never experienced such unprofessionell and unfriendly behaviour and I must say this is totally unaccaptable!! Obviously a stylish hotel does not mean having any good style at customer relations.. Stay away!!!

If you are lucky you've a nice room. We were not lucky.
We booked months ago a room for two days but we were not expected. We only could stay for one day in a nice room because a special guest booked also the room the next day. Our room for the second day was terrible. Very, very small, noisy, no shower.
They told us this room was similar but it wasn't similar at all. So we told but they didn't give any solution for the problem. So we decided to leave this hotel. We didn't feel us guest.

We are very sorry the reviewer had such a bad experience, and we would like to try to explain things to apologize. This happened quite a long time ago, and I still feel sorry for it.

The receptionist, Tina, was it is true, new in our team. She did a terrible mistake, she showed the guests the wrong room.
She realized it coming back to the desk, and notified the new guests immediately but it was already too late...
The room she showed, although free for the first night, was booked by another guest for a whole week starting the day after this. Since he had taken the trouble to come and choose the room for his week long stay, we could of course not just upgrade our reviewer.
Unfortunately also, Tina had the inadvertance to say the guest for the next day was a famous opera singer, trying to explain why we just could not change rooms. She actually meant the singer was very careful about choosing his room because he knew it would be a very stressful and hard week, having four or five operas to sing.

The reviewer must have been very insulted by this (perhaps thinking they were not good enough?), since any talking became absolutely impossible. Tina is a very kind and charming girl and naturally was very sorry and concerned by this. We immediately offered them champagne, and the so much wanted room could of course be used for the first night. They even could change their mind and cancel everything without costs.
But it was obious the wife of the reviewer was not to be consoled. There was nothing more to do, we could only accept the fact .
The next day they were very gentle and said they had a wonderful night and stay (in the opera singers room) but checked out altogether.

What still surprises me is that they did not see the exuberant luxury of the room that was reserved for them. The duo-bath is in an alcove, all covered in a wooden paneling with 18 ct gold detailing. The silver taps are mounted on a beautiful italian marble, saram colin, that is one of the most exclusive and expensive marbles of Italy. It is usually only seen on period furniture, not in bathrooms.
The wash basin, also in silver, is set in a (handpolished) walnut wash stand with the same marble and taps. The extra italian magnifying mirror with horn frame alone costs a good € 350.00

In the room, the huge framed mirror behind the bed, and the beautiful chimney (again in handpolished walnut) give the vast room (small??) a very elegant atmosphere, while every piece of furniture is of exquisite quality. The king size designer bed (€ 4.000,00), the bronze writing table with parchment table top (€ 6.000,00), the guilt screen with velvet panels, the big table lamps in real shagreen, the huge inlaid mirror, above the chimney, the beautiful antique veneired chest of drawers, give the room a luxurious and yet contemporary feel. The comfortable club chair of George Smith, and the XVIIIth century chair and the bronze stool match perfectly, while the art works of renowned artists , are originals, not reproductions or serial works as in most hotels.

Do I need to say we never had any one complaining about this room, and that we often like to choose this very froom for guests coming on a romantic occasion?

This very unfortunate accident is in any case a very good lesson in psychology, as well for me , as for Tina. The bottle of champagne we brought in an ice bucket was not even opened... it was just too late!

We very humbly offer our excuses to the unhappy guests, and hope they will forgive us.

Previous reviewers have gloried over the sublime decor of this property, and I can only support those comments. It is indeed a beautiful property. The owners run their interior design business from the hotel, also their home, to the detriment of the hotel. On arrival, a little travel weary, the receptionist seemed unaware that there were guests coming (although only one other party). While helpful, she was unsure of herself, and we had to ask for information re internet etc (which didn't work) There was no visitor information evident. The foyer was really a shop with home decor items and price tags dominating the area. Rolls of fabric and swatches were also evident, and stayed there for the duration of our stay. In addition I did not appreciate their dog jumping all over the little space available, and myself as well. At breakfast, the dog settled itself between us at the table, waiting to be fed. After asking for it to be taken out whilst we were eating , it then returned twice more, so we gave up. We have stayed in many guesthouses where well behaved animals are part of the family, but this was entirely inappropriate.
The bedroom, whilst beautiful, was also really a shop in disguise, with price tags on many items. Tacky.
When we returned from dinner at around 10.00, the guest lounge was closed with lights off, a very different scenario from the many other places we have stayed.
Breakfast, while beautifully served, was sparse and lacking variety.
Very disappointing.

Well there clearly is a misunderstanding.
We have chosen to be a Bed a breakfast right from the start. Although we now carefully hide every possible little package, we do live here and work here. You are staying with the locals.
We aim to offer our guests a very romantic and most comfortable stay in one of the most beautiful patrician houses of Ghent.

If it were not our private dwelling , it would not be what it is,
It is not just a historic building of considerable beauty. Its impressive collections of archaic chinese art, contemporary art (Yves Klein, Anselm Reyle, E. Spaletti and many others), beautiful antique furniture , the luxurious garden are the fruit of constant new acquisitions, dedication and love... It is not hard to explain, the "art de vivre" is our passion.

If that passion is tacky to some one, than we are sorry.
We try to give our guests a refined and homely feel, different from the anonimity of most of the classic hotels. A discreet and efficient service, a sincerely warm welcome without impressive formality as the surroundings are already quite impressive.
As we like to say, we do not have clients, we only have friends.

We stayed here for one night in October 07. in the room called "the forties", their best room. The hotel totals 4 rooms.

We've slept in many B&B and small fine hotels but nothing can beat this place. It is magnificent, in it's details and atmosphere. You feel like the master of a small castle. The design is very tastefull, wealthy and contemporary. Not just antique or just design.

There a 2 additional rooms: a dining one and a reading one, both for guests. Both are superb. We took the breakfast at the dining room which was very good! With a view on the large, architectual garden.

The rooms are situated in a small city "palace", near the city center. Only a 5 minutes walk to the well known places.

If you ever go to Gent and can afford the rates: book the room!

I was stunned by the amazing 18th century Hotel Verhaegen and the reception I got on my visit.
This is a truly exceptional "guesthouse", right in the heart of the old Ghent.
It is top end, not cheap, but worth every penny.
The 2 owners are interior decorators. Man , it shows. I sat in their living room ( guests are allowed in there to sit by the fire or have a glass of wine) and just kept discovering amazing pieces of art every where I looked.
My room was called : the Italian room. I felt like a medevial princess with my knight next to me... but then the flatscreen tv brought me back to reality.
This is a must for art lovers, for fans of the old and contemporary art. And talking about getting a personal service : when we woke up they brought us our breakfast on a large silver tray and it had real silver cutlery and beautifull porcelain all over..

If you want top quality, staying at a restored mansion from 1776 and receive the best personal service from the hosts, Hotel Verhaegen is my favourite.
I should not forget to mention their dog : Zeno. A beautiful, sweet, chocolate labrador who greeted every visitor with endless tailwiggles....

  • Liked — Amazing decoration and great taste for the old. Friendly hosts.Location. Silverwork. Art.
  • Disliked — My stay was too short
