We ate here on a Tuesday night after booking the night before. We had a choice of 18:30 or 21:30 so went for the early time.
On arrival there was one other couple there, but the place filled up over the evening.
The menu is a blackboard in the dining room, don't sit under it unless you like people staring over you as you eat !
We didn't have any starters, I had a white fish (the name of which eascapes me) and my wife had the rabbit. The fish arrived on a bed of mashed potato, the rabbit in a casserole with side dishes of roast potatoes, brocolli in a cheese sauce and a red cabbage salad.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, everything was cooked superbly and had good flavour. The service was friendly and they were happy to help, especially with translation of the menu.
Desserts follwed, a chocolate pie in chocaolate and cream sauce and a rice pudding. Both desserts finished off the meal in fine style, and finished off my wife and myself. we were well stuffed.
If we find ourselves in Gent again then we will certainly try to eat here again.

Visited on a Monday evening in August 2010. It was packed & they were turning people away (you have to book!) _ they only have one sitting, so the table is yours for the night which was nice as we weren't rushed & could relax. Blackboard menu changes daily depending on what is in season, good choice of dishes incl. meat, poultry, fish & a vegetarian option and all come with vegetables.....the portions are on the large side, be warned we didn't have a starter and even then couldn't manage a dessert! Staff very helpful, service good without being over bearing. If you want traditional / local cuisine (not tourist steak & frites) then this is the place to go.

De Avonden restaurant in Gent was such a treat, that I was quite reluctant to tell anybody about it when I discovered it last year.
I had planned on going to Gent last year. I had been disappointed for the most part at what I had found during a previous trip to Brugge. Not that the food was bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it was more akin to what I can find here in Manhattan in the so-called 'continental cuisine' department. I wanted something typical with soul! I did however find a very nice frituur in Brugge.
The Flemish have very nice cuisine indeed, such as carbonade flamande (aka stoofkarbonade). A beef bourguignon made with fine Oud bruin, Brune Abbey or Flanders red beer in lieu of (preferably) a red Burgundy. These are by no means run of the mill beers! Carbonade flamande is also a tip of the hat to the house of Burgundy which ruled over most of Belgium for a time.
I had scoured various resources regarding restaurants in Gent, including Dutch and Belgian sources. The most genuine reviews kept pointing towards De Avonden, as heads above the rest. The passionate chef/owner Murielle Liekens creates wondrous traditional dishes all with local and seasonal ingredients. I think I had found what I was looking for!
Needless to say, after arriving in Gent, I immediately made my way to De Avonden, not exactly a beeline, more like meandering my way there, as I was staying at the opposite end of Gent. I arrived at about 5:30 or so. I knock on the door of this modest building on this unassuming street, at Ham 39, just a few minutes walk from the center of Ghent, just across the Lys (or Leie) on the way to the Gent-Damspoort station. I told her along with her staff that I had many good things about her restaurant and that I wanted to eat at her restaurant this night. She smiled beautifully, as she told me she was booked. After I told her that I had walked nearly 5 kms to get there or a little over 3 miles (I may have exaggerated a bit), she asked if 9 o'clock would be ok. I said, "perfect!".
Murielle thinks of herself as more of a cook than as a chef. I suppose that means that she's more the passionate instrumentalist than the conductor. She is a master of her ingredients, combining them in a way that allows all of the flavours to shine harmoniously. Whether a Cabillaud with crayfish a la gueze or whatever specials she has you cannot go wrong. I leave it up to her, myself.
Murielle had me at the first meal! So much so that I modified my trip to make it back through Gent two weeks later just to eat at her restaurant. I went to Gent this year as well, just to eat at De Avonden. Yes, its that good! Though I do also enjoy strolling through beautiful Gent. A city that easily rivals Brugge, but we can also keep that to ourselves.
The wonderful food is a given, while the atmosphere at De Avonden is great! Its relaxed, unpretentious whether inside its homey digs or in the beautiful garden. Did I mention that its also quite reasonable? Because people in Gent that are in the know "know" about De Avonden, she's booked every night. Except Saturday and Sunday, because she closes to reinvigorate herself and to enjoy her wonderful family.
Now you know why I didn't want to share this wonderful restaurant with anybody! Book as soon as you can and if she says that she's booked...Tell her that Tony sent you!
