“A quality week's stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2011

As previously frequent visitors to Budock Vean, we have pretty high expectations of our visits to the hotel. After a three year gap, we decided to return for the Easter week and booked one of the self catering cottages (with it's own garden), and our expectations were exceeded. The staff were, as ever, helpful, friendly, and attentive. The accommodation was spacious, family oriented, and good quality, The food, if anything, has improved, with high quality offerings at all levels (bar lunches and restaurant), whilst the facilities continue to be of a high standard. The pool is excellent, the golf course in great condition, the gardens down to the creek are really maturing nicely, and the hot tub a real favourite! Easter Sunday was well organised with an effective egg hunt and a superb lunch, whilst sitting on the excellent terrace overlooking the gardens in the sunshine listening to a string quartet on the afternoon of the Royal Wedding topped a perfect week. Budock Vean isn't cheap but IS excellent value (not least when I think of what money now buys in the average city) whilst the cost of wine and food is very reasonable. The 65 acres of gardens and grounds are a joy in themselves and the free use of all of the facilities included in the price of the cottage is a real plus. The children simply love the place, with a great pool, safe environment and sympathetic staff. Well done BV.

This was our first visit to Budock Vean (mother-in-law has been 14 times!). Our first encounter was over the phone with Lydia, an extremely helpful and insightful lady in reception who described in detail the room options/amenities and ensured we got the room she felt was right for us. And so it turned out to be - a superior room with beautiful views. First impressions are that the hotel is a bit dated - something from a bygone era but once ensconced it became very evident that first impressions were misleading. Yes the decor is a bit 70's but it is extremely comfortable, clean and efficient. We signed up for dinner, bed and breakfast and the quality and variety of food was impeccable - the best we have experienced in years (and we frequently stay at 5star hotels). A pianist most nights and classical guitarist one night were fine touches. The icing on the cake for us was the levels of service provided by all staff. In all our years of travel the service levels in this establishment were second to none. Also, Martin Barlow, the owner made a point of talking with all guests on several evenings of the week which was also impressive.
Being golfers we were concerned that the hotel only boasted a 9 hole course, but we thoroughly enjoyed the course and played every day. The pool, sauna and hot-tub were all great. The spa was good but the deep tissue massage was not as invigorating/aggressive as an ex-rugby player needed to loosen up tired muscles, even the wife felt it was a little timid. Great staff though and very courteous and friendly.
Any faults? I would have to be really nit-picking to come up with anything substantive. Maybe a trouser press in the room, maybe a fitness centre? I initially thought a jacket & tie for dinner was a little pretentious before I got there, but with hindsight I think it was very much in keeping with the high standards set by owner and staff.

We stayed over the Christmas period. One of our party has great difficulty walking, so apart from very short distances had to move about in a wheel-chair. This was described to the hotel at the time of booking. There was access to the room from the back of the hotel and up the lift, but the dining room had steps: two down to lift level and six up to lounge and reception. The shower in the room had a step up and no grab handles. It was not suitable for a disabled person. The hotel also has a curious policy of turning off the heating during the day and at night in one of the coldest winters on record. An electric heater had to be requested.

The food is superb. Lots of local produce especially fresh fish. The service is good and friendly. The sporting facilities are excellent. I didn't try them all but the pool was good.

The wi-fi signal was down during the Christmas period since no engineer was available over the holiday period.

This was our 2nd trip to Budock Vean Hotel, having stayed there the same time last year. This year we booked 2 weeks from 30th October in one of the hotels self-catering cottages (last year we only stayed for a week in the same cottage and wished we'd stayed longer). The cottage was The Old 19th, a spacious 4 bedroom cottage with a kitchen and living room that I can only dream of ever owning!
There were 4 of us that went away, 2 couples and 3 dogs between us and days were spent enjoying the surrounding areas and the evenings spent in front of the wood burning fire in the cottage.
This was our first year for taking our dogs with us and the hotel were very accomodating with them and the charges for having them with us in the cottage were very reasonable. The garden is more than adequate and fully enclosed so we were happy to let the dogs wander around it without having to keep an eye on them.
The cottage has all the items you would need for self catering including a dishwasher which was a luxury for me as I don't have one at home! There was a washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility room which meant wet clothes after long walks in the slightly inclement weather didn't stay wet for long.
The 2 guys in our group made full use of the golf course, playing most days (included in the cost of the cottage) and us two girls went out horseriding (£50 for a 2hr beach ride at Reen Manor stables in Perranporth) and we all used the swimming pool and hot tub on more than one occasion (again included in the price).
We ate in the main restaurant on two occasions at residents rate and there were no major complaints over the food, although I would echo some comments from other reviews about the limited choices if you don't like fish, especially on the starters (I do so I thoroughly enjoyed them). Despite the portion sizes not seeming all that big, we all struggled by the time we got to the puddings, which incidentally were fabulous!.
We didn't seem to find the time to fit in a cream tea at the hotel which is served between 3-5pm but we did last year and it was yummy with huge scones and plently of clotted cream!
My only major complaint would be that my partner and I had the bedroom at the back of the cottage over the kitchen. It has locked connecting doors to the building next door and I would hazzard a guess that the top floor accomodation in that building is used as staff accomodation as almost religiously at around 11pm every night, we could clearly hear doors opening and closing, shower pumps operating and some noise in general. This was disappointing as last year we did not hear any of this.
Overall, we had another relaxing stay at The Old 19th and would happily go back again, with or without the dogs and would not hesitate to reccomend it to friends and family.

Beautiful hotel, garden, golf course, swimming pool but the hotel is being let down by its repetitive menu.If you are a fan of fish this is the place to be,but to have two fish starters out of a choice of four every evening is just too much and added to this melon was on every night. It got worse by there being two fish dishes out of a choice of four for the main course.Strawberries were on every night. For a four star hotel this is poor .To get the full value you definitely need to be a golfer, because if not it does not justify £113 per person per night.

Although we only stayed one night we had a wonderful time at the Budock Vean. Our double aspect room was lovely and the bathroom was clean, minimal and smart. The indoor pool complex was superb, lots of space to read and generally relax in between dips in the gorgeous pool. Dinner was perfect and the staff were attentive and helpful. Great night's sleep - bed was comfortable and the hotel was quiet. Breakfast was good but having ate too much the night before we couldn't really take full advantage of it. Definitely hope to return in the future and spend longer enjoying the facilities and warm welcome from the staff.

I'm still not sure how to rate this hotel. It is good, surely more than average, but still it has some things missing. I've just spent there a weekend with my boyfriend and we liked it, despite, as I said, it wasn't the best hotel we've been at.
The room we were in was spacious, facing the golf field and garden, but not very modern. The walls were a bit thin, in fact we could hear people talking and snoring. It wasn't so loud to be disturbing but still not very good.
The property though is wonderful, there is a path that connects the hotel to the river and it's also possible (paying it extra) to rent a private boat or to go to a little tour on the river.
The swimming pool area is good as well, the pool is big, the temperature of the water just right and there are also a table tennis and a little sauna. We've been there at luch time, we were the only one there and so we could totally enjoy it. Just on the outside there is also a hot tub surrounded by very nice plants, that make the place more comfortable, private and relaxing. The water was hot, but not too hot.
The hotel has three big rooms with armchairs and sofas where it's possible to enjoy a drink, a table game or just a book. Just outside the little bar there is also a porch in windows with a nice view of the garden.
Despite at the beginning I didn't like the idea of the dress code for dinner, I have to say that after all it didn't bother us so much. The atmosphere was nice and relaxing anyway and the staff was kind and smily. Food was very good, we could enjoy every night three generous and tasty courses.
We will probably go back there, Cornwell is a fantastic region and despite the hotel is a bit far from everything it's a good point to start exploring from.
