“A Fantastic Hotel with Stuningly Helpful Staff”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

We return to Budock Vean every November for an annual get-together of friends and family.

The reception staff are the most helpful and welcoming of any hotel we have ever visited, and they will do anything they possibly can to ensure you fully enjoy your stay.

In fact all the staff at Budock Vean are extremely helpful, friendly, polite and knowledgable and without exception will always go the extra mile for guests without question or hesitation.

We personally enjoy the jacket and tie policy for dinner and it is a pleasure to stay somewhere nice without screaming children, hooray Henry's on mobile phones or intrusive background music. This place is a relaxed quiet oasis of calm - and long may it stay so!

The hotel must be commended for the high quality of vegan food that they prepared and for the wonderful choices available to us - from home made vegan scones for afternoon tea to vegan pannacotta for a delightful dessert. Compliments to all the kitchen and restaurant staff for looking after us two vegans so superbly well during our stay. It certainly shows their ability to cater for all dietary requirments.

The spa staff must be the nicest we have ever met, you can feel absolutely safe in their hands and enjoy the wide range of lovely treatments on offer and perhaps try out treatments that you might think twice about ever having done elsewhere. The special offers of the month also help to make treatments more affordable.

During our stay we also enjoyed a boat trip that was absolutely out of this world from the hotel foreshore along the Helford, guided walks around the Lizard as well as the spa, pool, hot-tub and snooker table all at the hotel.

The only suggestions that we would make are for the hotel to remove the poor goldfish from the gimic fish tank in the gents loo, that the hot tub area is now in need of bit of a makeover and that a hair salon would be a most welcome addition to the hotels facilities.

Repeat guests benefit from a 20% discount - so all in all, we and all our friends will most definately be back every November. We cannot recommend Budock Vean highly enough!

Although I live in nearby Devon I know of no other hotel in the region where you have a choice of native oysters from the river Fal, or farmed oysters from the nearby Royal Dutchy oyster beds...or where I can get a cheese souffle to equal any in France. The cooking is a perfect balance between french "cuisine traditionelle" and classic local cornish, with free canapes in the bar before dinner and live music every evening; no wonder we go there three times a year!
The hotel service and facilities are excellent - real fires, turn down room service every evening, shoes cleaned overnight by staff (no shoe cleaning machines here), newspaper in your room every morning. Its also a good location for touring west Cornwall and walking the coastal path and the Hotel Concierge is a mine of information.
All in all an exceptionally comfortable hotel, superbly managed by the owners who live nearby, offering a holiday experience which makes you think twice before venturing abroad.

Room Tip: Book well in advance and choose a room with a view down the valley towards the Helford river.

This was our second visit to this hotel, and it managed to exceed the standards of our first visit. Our 4 night autumn break in this lovely corner of south Cornwall was made highly enjoyable by the first class service, accommodation and food at the Budock Vean. Biggest grumble - perhaps one evening there might have been more ice in our G&T's! We were impressed by the attempts to be more 'green', by the visit to our dinner table by the hotel owner who had briefed himself on our names, and by the quality of the food at dinner. We highly recommend this hotel for all, but perhaps not the best place for little children.

Recently visited Budock Vean 8 years after our first visit which had been for our silver wedding anniversary. Asked by reception on booking in whether I still read the Times and whether I'd changed my car from the one on their records! Although this was quite amusing, it did set the tone for the excellent personal service we enjoyed throughout our stay.

The food is really excellent and there is a wide selection at dinner each night, usually including at least a couple of fish dishes. There is also plenty of good, reasonably priced wines to choose from, although you can also spend a lot if you wish to. The nice touches at dinner include the fact that you can turn up whenever you like during restaurant opening hours and don't need to book a time in advance as in some hotels. Jackets and ties for men, and no very young children, also "shape" the evening atmosphere and, whilst this won't appeal to some people, it definitely suited us.

Our room was huge and had a queen sized bed with a WC separate from the bathroom. We looked out over the golf course which was really nice. The room was showing some slight evidence of needing a facelift but you excused that as "faded grandeur" and saw it as part of the overall experience. After all, this is probably as far away from a faceless modern chain hotel as you can get.

The 9 hole golf course is quite challenging, although it was extremely wet and muddy when we were there and was closed on one day of continuous rain. Spring and summer must be the best time to play here (as it is the best time to visit Cornwall in general) but the staff tried their best to make the course available to hotel guests.

We would have liked to go on the Helford river in the hotel boat but unfortunately the trip, mentioned to us when we booked in, was subsequently cancelled in favour of a private charter. Understandable to some extent but quite disappointing none the less.

My wife tried the Spa and had nothing but praise for the staff working there. The swimming pool is huge, but very shallow (1 metre), and the new outdoor hot tub is quite a fun addition since our previous trip.

Looking back, spending 7 hours to drive 400 miles from north Essex for just 3 nights does not seem very sensible. However, Cornwall is a very long way from home so, for us, there is unfortunately little choice. The only real choice is whereabouts in Cornwall we stay when we visit. If that is to be a hotel, rather than a cottage, then Budock Vean is undoubtedly at the top of our list. We definitely won't be leaving it another 8 years before our next visit.

Room Tip: Rooms in "new" block are probably bigger but the old part of building is more attractive...

Lovely unexpected weather and what a lovely place to be! I found this hotel while browsing on Tripadvisor. Then I read mostly good reviews,so decided to book the only room available. I asked about their boat trip on the Helford river and they booked us on it before we arrived. I am so glad we did that as it was really good, "do not miss it". After visiting I can't imagine anyone giving a bad or even a mediocre review. We arrived to a very friendly greeting and were shown to a very nice room, but we were upgraded to an even better room the next day at no extra charge. The staff were really friendly and helpful and this atmosphere seemed to rub off on the guests as they all seemed happy and extreamly friendly too. The food was indeed first class and the service was as good as it gets. Did not use the spa, so can't comment. The grounds were fabulous even in October, However we will go again in Apri/May as the gardens must be delight about then. Only trouble is getting such good reviews might attract to many people thus making it difficult to book. So book well in advance. DJ

Room Tip: Al rooms are nice but the ones overlooking the valley have the nicest outlook

Having been to the Budock Vean almost every year since 2003, I would like to disagree wholeheartedly with any less than favourable reviews left about this hotel. The Budock Vean is located in a nice, tranquil area of Cornwall (the Helford River) giving it a quiet and relaxing nature. The service from the staff is fantastic, especially amongst its longest serving staff members, including Mo (one of the site managers), Wendell (from the restaurant) and Chris (the wine waiter). Also worth noting is head chef Darren Kelly, as he and his team have created some of the finest food I have ever had in my life, the food is actually the best thing about the hotel. The rooms serve all your needs well, and whilst I can understand some people's views that the decor is a little dated, it doesn't marr the experience very much and actually suits the hotel quite nicely in my opinion. The leisure facilities, including the swimming pool and snooker room, are all very well kept and are great additions to the hotel, as well as the golf course (even though I'm not a golfer myself it appears to be popular with the guests). The hotel is also a very short walk from the Helford River itself, where boat trips can also be arranged. The guests at the hotel are generally older, but it does cater for the younger generation as well, with the aforementioned lesiure facilities and locations to visit nearby, including Trebah Gardens and the like. If you are looking for a fantastic location and food and plenty to do in the general area, this is the hotel for you. As long as I come to Cornwall, I have no need to stay anywhere else, and will certainly be returning. Well done to the Barlow family (the owners) and their fantastic, friendly staff
