“Not for everyone perhaps, but a great hotel for us”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2012

There are plenty of hotels in Cornwall that are more chic, trendy, perhaps better decorated and so on. But that's not the point about the Budock Vean.
Unlike a lot of the newcomers in Cornwall, the Budock Vean has history. Its an institution. Sure it's not perfect and if you don't like dressing for dinner, please don't book and then bleat about it later.
But if you like a hotel that has squishy sofas, good food, walks, a good pool, spa and people who are civil and have standards, this is for you.
Dogs are also welcome at a price far cheaper than Travelodge, but only in your room and the ample grounds.
The golf is good, the food is good, the staff are unpretentiously friendly and courteous, the management is hands on and personal.
I don't give five dots easily but the Budock Vean gets them for character, charm and comfort.

I have been meaning to put a review up as we stayed here over New Years. We had an excellent time enjoyed ourselves even though it was a tad wet outside. The room we had was a little tired and did look out over the kitchen to the first tee on the golf course. But we could not fault the facilities and the bed was comfortable. It had plenty of space in there and a bathroom and bath on one side and a bathroom with shower on the other side. Took the dog along as well he seemed to be ok with the hotel!

The food was very good over the 3 days we stayed and the wine selection first class, plenty for breakfast as well. The whole event was very well organised.

Staff were very helpful and friendly. Only comment would have been don't tell the dining room staff off when you are in charge and let the customers hear what is being said. Should be kept for outside of the public areas no matter what is going on.

The grounds are very good with some excellent walks that can take you down to the water, and if you really want some decent hill running is just outside the gate!

We had a very relaxing 3 days and were very happy with attentive staff and superb food. All the public areas of the hotel were immaculate and the grounds and walks well looked after. The only negative comment is that the room decor was dated and very tired, with ceiling paper peeling and some worn painted areas. There was only a cheap pine shelf in the bathroom for personal toiletries. We had an upgrade to a 'superior' room but cannot see what we had over and above what you would expect from any hotel room. An updated room would have made it perfect.

Room Tip: We had a super view on the west side which helped to take our eyes off the decor!

Just back from a two night stay. A fabulous property in an outstanding location, it is owned and run by the Barlow family who have wonderful taste and a genuine desire to care for every visitor. Our stay was truly memorable as staff, from top to bottom, owner to greenkeeper, do all they can to make your time at the hotel as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.
The magnificent swimming pool with a log fire burning at one end and the outdoor hot-tub are particularly splendid. The golf course on site is both fun to play and sufficiently challenging, I guess, for most abilities. I loved it and played 18 holes three times. Nothing is too much trouble for the golf shop staff.
Food is simply first class: ambiance as good as it gets.
Living in Cornwall, we have first-hand experience of many of the best hotels.
In our view, this is the best in the Duchy.

We arrived at the hotel for a 2 night weekend break and recieved a warm welcome from reception, the first thing that struck as we walked In the door was the lovely smell of log fires. After an easy check In we went to our room which was a superior, large, clean and well equipped, a liitle old fashioned decor wise but nice non the less.
The evening meal was divine, fresh and expertly prepared, men are requested to wear jacket and tie for evening meals.
The breakfast choices were just as appetising.
The health spa is small, but the staff were friendly and the treatments were wonderful.
Unfortunatley the hot tub was not working, but the setting of having it outside was lovely.
The hotel look is aimed at an older clientele than ourselves (30's) we would still highly reccomend for a relaxing weekend.

A new visitor to Budock Vean - we enjoyed a restful week in delightful surroundings. A cottage in the grounds was booked - very high standards throughout, and exceptional value if travelling in a larger party. (we only had a party of four however the accommodation was for up to eight and there was plenty of room). All rooms clean, light yet cosy. Lovely use of log fire and good to see a Christmas touch with decked tree on arrival.
Spa center well worth a visit for those relaxing treats. pool and sauna area pleasant and have easy access - be mindful of log fire where little ones are in the vicinity.
All staff very helpful. Dress code for dinner may be off putting for some - added to our celebrations.

Room Tip: Old 19th easy access, good family accommodation. Note Kitchen all electric - however well equipped...

Last Christmas I went to a wedding held in the Budock Vean and it was lovely. The food was exceptional and the service was first class.

The views were made all the more picturesque with the snow covered ground. The staff were also very helpful in finding extra room for those stranded by the weather.

All in all a great place to stay.
