“relaxation at its best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

we spent a relaxing weekend here everything was perfect the indoor pool was lovely and open for a long time along with the hot tub and sauna. food is superb with a good variety of local products cooked to order. i agree the dress code was confusing as on the website it said jacket and tie after 7pm but when you get there it was relaxed during summer months to just smart trousers and shirt. the views are lovely and the grounds well kept with a small walk of 5 minutes down to the waters edge.
a little pricey but a treat well worth every penny spent
the staff get 10 out of 10 they certainly make your weekend the most special one

Room Tip: room 1 is a four poster and is the closest to the swimming pool through a walk way

Thank you for your review. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your time with us.

We are sorry to hear you found the dresscode confusing. We have double checked all our literature, website and confirmation correspondence to double check this is clearly communicated. Despite previous best efforts we did discover an online travel agent was displaying the wrong information and we have requested this is changed as soon as possible.

Thank you again.

This is a good hotel and has the potential to be absolutely wonderful. The hotel also has a golf course, large grounds leading to its own foreshore on Port Navas creek off the helford river, a swimming pool complex and hot tub, tennis courts, 4 separate cottages and spa.
There are also 4 new build apartments/houses being built behind the pool area.
The public rooms (lounges) have been recently updated in light colours and new furnishings. I understand some bedroom are also being refurbished.
The food is good and the service efficient and pleasant. I felt the chaps in the bar were a little brusque but were very busy. The hotel has what is said to be strict dress code of jacket and tie for men at dinner, dresses for ladies. This is relaxed during school holidays and I couldn't quite work out whether men could abandon jacket and tie or, jacket or, tie. it is insisted however that dress should still be smart, so no jeans, trainers, shorts etc. This seems to have gone haywire while we were there, as we noted diners in jeans, polo shirts, trainers. Rules for the dining room also say no mobile phones but again this was disregarded by some.
I know many don't like being told what to wear but at every step of the booking procedure the "strict" dress code is pointed out, whether you book online or direct with the hotel by phone. So if a strict dress code isn't for you, don't visit this hotel, unless of course the hotel don't enforce their own code. There are, or, were strict rules about children in the dining room after 7pm. But again children were running about after this time.
For us we don't play golf, tennis, use a spa, or, swim, we went for the hotel ambiance, food, pleasant peaceful grounds and the opportunity to dress for dinner.
So for us if the dress code is not enforced there isn't a lot that we need to pay the nightly rate for, we can get all the other facilities we need much cheaper.
I do think the hotel need to focus on where it is positioning itself. I fully understand that younger people, (and probably some older) find dress codes irritating, but others like us enjoy the experience of dressing up for dinner. Out of holiday periods I expect the older generations will still stay at BV and I can see the need for the hotel to attract others with children during school holidays, So it depends what you want, but for us I'll save my money and follow the BV example and go downmarket a bit

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the grounds, but with golf club ground maintenance and building works it may be no...

Thank you for taking the time to review the Budock Vean Hotel. Further to our conversations during your stay and my personal letter to you it is important to say first and foremost we are sorry you were dissatisfied with your dinner experience.

It is certainly not our intention to lower standard or change the ambience of the hotel dining experience but we feel it appropriate to evolve the dresscode. As of January 2014 we evolved the policy such that gentlemen are now generally required to wear jacket or tie, other than in all school holidays when neither jacket nor tie are required.

We have double checked all our literature, websites and confirmation correspondence to double check this is clearly communicated. Jeans, trainers and t-shirts are not acceptable however and we remain determined to maintain our dresscode.

Please do accept our apologies once more for the experience you had.

Lovely hotel, treated like royalty. The food is lovely, the staff can't do enough for you. The owner meets you on your day to introduce himself. Not the cheapest place but a real treat. The spa is lush

It was my daughter birthday, she was 26 , she wanted some pampering.as we live in Cornwall, we had a variety of choice, so we looked on line, we saw this advertised and booked, neither of us had been to a spa day before, we weren't disappointed . The staff were wonderful, the food was great and our treatments were amazing .thankyou to you all for a wonderful 1st spa day. We will definetly be coming back.

If you are looking for total relaxation and sheer luxury in lovely surroundings then this is the hotel for you. We had a suite overlooking the valley and golf course and access to all the amenities on offer. Expensive but worth every penny - and you cant often say that!
Criticism? Only very slight. Asked for poached eggs for breakfast one morning and received one solitary egg on a tiny square of toast. Waitress argued that I should have specified how many I wanted, instead of apologising and putting right!!!! But that was the only (tiny) flaw in what was otherwise a superb fine dining experience overall.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay at the Budock Vean Hotel and we are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay.

We are disappointed to hear breakfast may not have been up to our usual high quality of customer service on one occasion and for this we apologise. We have discussed this further with the team and will ensure this is addressed.

Thank you so much for the five star rating. We hope to see you again soon.

Extremely comfortable hotel in beautiful surroundings, superbly run by the Barlow family. Excellent food, helpful staff for whom nothing is too much trouble. We visit whenever we can and are pleased to recommend the hotel to all our friends.

Room Tip: We have stayed in many different rooms, all of them highly satisfactory.

This is our second stay with Budock Vean and apart from a couple of issues, this has got to be one of the best places we have stayed. We were due to stay in Badgers Cottage (again) but people asked to extend their stay (who were already in Badgers) and we got a very nice phone call from Stuart who explained that we would be upgraded to three bedroom cottage of Beavers Lodge. One we were happy to take as had previously asked for the 3 bedroom and got told that it was fully booked at that time. On entering Beavers Lodge you are hit by the spacious rooms and overall space of the cottage (wonderful), however, what we did not expect was the noise from the neighbouring cottage (Beavers Dam)or should I say the people who were staying there, me & my husband were woken the first morning at 6.00am by the tv of next door and not only that they didn't just talk at each other they thought it necessary to shout at each other!(we were in the back bedroom & largest) not a good start BUT they seemed to have left that morning- hoorah - not for long, a family were in next with we don't know how many kids, but they were noisier! We went on the 12th July and the reason for this is to avoid "kiddies" but to no avail, will put a complaint in next time if it gets unbearable.
Also, as we arrived it was sweltering ( about 30 degrees) and for some reason the heating was on in the cottage so you can imagine the heat was ridiculous! Thank goodness my husband was able to turn the heating off!
The other issue is the room our daughter stayed in had very noisy pipes that continually banged, so beware.
On the good side the staff, the food (we sent for room service a few times) and the amenities at this place are superb, so apart from noisy people we have booked again for next year and chose a different cottage, hence for us this year not quite 5 stars - last years was a 5 star stay and we are hoping next year to be a 5 star stay :-)
We always bring my mum and our little dog - and again our daughter, who really enjoy their stay here.
We did mention above to the reception and they were very nice about it.
Last words.....we do really luv it here.

Room Tip: Just be aware if you are staying in Beavers Lodge or Beavers Dam, noise travels through the walls a...

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay in Beavers Lodge. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the upgrade but so sorry to hear you were disturbed by guests in the neighbouring cottage during your stay.

We are also sorry to hear the heating was on. This most certainly should not have happened and we have put strict procedures in place to double check the heating has not been tampered with before a guest checks in.

We look forward to welcoming you back!
