I want to live at the Budock Vean.

Charming, correct (oh how refreshing THAT is), super teas...

We will return to take Sunday lunch and use the pool & facilities...

We love this hotel and have stayed here many times. The location is wonderful. You walk down through the grounds and arrive at the river where it is possible to go kayaking or take a river boat cruise (you book at reception). We had a lovely trip on the 'Hannah Molly' and were able to appreciate the beautiful unspoilt creeks of the Helford. You can easily walk to Helford Passage and the Ferry Boat Inn, Trebah and Glendurgan Gardens.
We had a warm welcome and James carried our luggage to our room. My favourite rooms are those on the southern side in the old part of the hotel. They have a lovely aspect. We were very comfortable.
I enjoyed a pre breakfast swim every morning and had the large pool to myself for much of the time, then a soak in the outdoor hot tub.
The service and food were both excellent. There are plenty of staff in the restaurant and they are well organised. I enjoyed the fish and seafood choices .
The lounge has recently been refurbished and is traditional, but chic.It is good for relaxing with a drink and/or a book.
The hotel is very traditional in many ways, for example there are no key cards here and you don't see many people using mobile phones or i pads.We find it very relaxing. It's good to come to a hotel that is not part of a chain, where the owner is still very involved.

This was our first visit back to Budock Vean since our wedding day and it was delightful that so little has changed, including the excellent service, the wonderful warm welcome and the incredible food.We stayed in the suite, as we did before and enjoyed every wonderful minute of it. Just need to make sure it isn't another 13 years before we return again.

We stayed a week at the hotel on b&b basis. We'd booked a Cornwall holiday at the last moment and this venue and facilities appeared to meet our needs. We thought we'd done well. On reflection we were only half right and, perhaps, that was in part our fault for booking late?

There is much to commend the hotel - it's setting, it's grounds and especially the secluded riverside area and terrace. It's various sporting facilities were a draw and my wife used the spa, pool and hot tub while I practised snooker. We also enjoyed the games lounge. Neither of us are golfers but we enjoyed our room's view over the course and were not at all disturbed by the daily course maintenance or by it's use. Staff were always professional and some in particular were especially helpful and welcoming (eg. Sam, James, Rachel). We ate on the Terrace on a couple of evenings and the food was of good quality, while enjoying the views of the valley in which the hotel is housed. The hotel is also well placed for nearby Falmouth and various tourist attractions.

Our initial impressions of the hotel on our arrival were good (lovely grounds, easy parking, friendly reception and helpful James to carry our luggage) but as we meandered up several flights of stairs and through narrow drab artexed corridors, stopping and starting for other guests as if driving down Cornwall roads our excitement began to wear off. We eventually reached our room and unfortunately it was one that had still to be refurbished. We felt as if transported back to the late 80s/early 90s. Everything was clean but, sadly, very very tired. But it was the stifling heat from the room (the window was locked shut) that meant that we had to ask reception to open it with a key and for the large window to be permanently opened wide (which obscured the TV) - even the uht milk had gone off in the heat : we were given a small fridge and fresh milk but the hum of the fridge and still very warm room meant we didn't sleep well for the first few nights. Knowing that there were these problems and at the prices we were paying we did think that we could have been offered another room (if free), or reduced costs or a complimentary meal.

Our late room booking meant too that we had been allocated a breakfast table the closest to the buffet table. Clear advantages in some regards but not ideal and again we thought that an alternative table could have been offered away from hub bub at buffet table. Perhaps we should have just commandeered a better table as a fellow guest did and stayed there even when challenged by the staff. Generally I enjoyed my breakfast but my wife unfortunately experienced several poor hot meals - an omelette that even the waiter admitted was like two fried eggs folded into each other; soggy scrambled egg and a very runny fried egg. Unfortunately the toast too was soggy.

The sauna and hot tub are good but there are very limited facilities and these can soon be awash with a hen party or young/not so old couples who are happy to stay there for very long periods denying others use.

Others refer on TA to the hotel's dress code for dinner in the dining room. I will too, although I don't have a solution. As a member of Middlesex CCC (@Lord's) I fully understand the conformity and rules there are clearly understood and applied. But Lord's essentially serves only one type of clientel - cricket lovers; so such a code can be readily applied. The hotel however is trying to serve several different types of customer, largely allows everyone to go everywhere on the hotel's ground floor and as a consequence people dress very differently around the hotel even in the evening. This is especially true around the lounges, conservatory and terrace. Yet some customers, clearly dressed to the code for dinner looked perplexed and somewhat angst when confronted with someone in shorts or a bathrobe having a beer or wine on the terrace. This doesn't make for a totally relaxed atmosphere.

The hotel could be fantastic (and in some ways is) but it needs to work on some of the more fundamental service delivery issues highlighted here - yes, the refurbishment will help. But having a more holistic approach to problems, with various solutions, encountered by customers would help too. A 'how was your stay' on paying nearly £1800 on leaving would help too.

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to the Budock Vean Hotel. We thank you for your kind comments and will pass these on to the team.

We do appreciate constructive feedback and try to respond wherever possible. The hotel is currently going through a transition period and some areas have been refurbished whilst others are still to be refurbished. We would have offered you a refurbished room had one been available.

Our Reception team are always keen to ask how guest’s enjoyed there stay and our guest questionnaires are read and responded too so, again, I apologise if this was not the case on this occasion.

We do hope you will visit us again and I would be grateful if you could contact Melanie directly at management@budockvean.co.uk so we can discuss your comments further.

Visited today to use the pool area and was shocked to find the whole area extremely unclean. Mould around windows, muddy floor, black mould and hair under the seats in the sauna. Just generally very unclean! Will not be returning!
