Owner description: Belgium is famous for its frites—and the Friet Museum gives visitors a chance to sample fried potatoes and various complementary sauces, as well as typical Belgian dishes such as meat balls and beef stew. Digest a bit of learning and history along with your food at this educational spot, housed in a building that dates back to the 14th century.

Very interesting place to visit. You may wonder how can they have a museum all about chips (Friet, Fries) Well it is not only about fries. It starts with the history of the potato, how it was discovered, cultured and eventually brought to Europe. Then how the first chips came about and If you want to know how they ended up being called French Fries in many countries around the world, even though the Belgians invented them. Then you will just have to pay a visit your self, I can recommend it.

This unique museum is a bit of a joke in a way but it turned out to be remarkably informative! We learned a lot about the history of the potato, how it reached Europe (its introduction to the UK was somewhat late in the day) and how the humble chip became a dietary staple. There's a chip restaurant in the basement where you can sample Belgium's culinary classic for yourself.

I've been to special interest museums like this before, so thought it would be fun to try this one. There's a lot of displays with information in many languages on potatoes and fries here. It's a fun museum with information on how the best fries are made. I thought the fries-o-mastic type dispenser from the 1980s (?) was interesting. Who knew such a thing had been attempted! It was also interesting to learn how much the cart vendors pay for their annual license - they must make a lot of money! I was also interested in the history of the building and thought there'd be more information on it once inside. Apparently it is the oldest building with a date on it in Bruges. The best part of the visit to this museum though was, appropriately, the fries! They are freshly made to order and like none other I'd had in the city! Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Not at all soggy. I enjoyed every last one!! Worth the visit just for then fries.

We'd already paid a flat fee for the Bruges card, so we didn't pay for admission to the museum, and I still felt that our visit was a waste. Bruges is filled with small museums, but this one really stretched to include much of anything. There is, however, a looping video of potatoes being harvested, so I suppose there's that. I
