For Christmas, i surprised my boyfriend with train tickets to Bruges with a weekend in a bed and breakfast. I found Monique Den Hert through a search engine and contacted her immediately. She offered to pick us up the day we arrived from the train station. On our way through town towards her home, she gave us tips about where to eat and pointed out sights we might like to see. The Bed and Breakfast is only 600 meters from the Markt, where you cross a small bridge over a canal and down a quiet street. The suite was so much bigger than we expected, with two levels (the first with the kitchen, bathroom and the upstairs where the bedroom is) and we had an absolutely wonderful stay, which was very private and cozy.
We enjoyed a wonderful Belgian breakfast and Monique prepared the best hot chocolate i have ever had - homemade, with real dark chocolate and she even showed me how to do it! Her 'pain perdue' (French toast) was amazing! We asked for a lesson in Flemish (Monique also speaks excellent English and French) and she gave us more information about Bruges. The day we left, she took us to the Canada Bridge where Canadian soldiers liberated Bruges during World War II. We could never have imagined a more welcoming hospitality!
We hope to go back, but until then, we will be recommending her to everyone we know!
