“ONE OF THE BEST HOTELS I HAVE EVER STAYED AT”
Reviewed 7 May 2010

From start to finish this Hotel is one of the Best. All the staff are extremely friendly, all rooms (Public & Private) are exceptionally clean and the breakfast choice is great. The bed is one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in !! Never stayed in Belgium before but I can heartily recommend this hotel to anybody. Situated only a short walk from all sights it is a must for the discerning traveller. Even my wife liked it – doesn’t that say it all !!!!!!!!

We booked a package for our first trip to Bruges as we were not sure about language/travel problems that may occur. No problems anywhere. Everyone was pleased to speak to us in English, probably better than the staff in the last English hotel we stayed at. The rooms were large and comfortable with a super bathroomwith bath and separate shower. As with most hotels the minibar was expensive but the coffee and beers in the bar/lounge were very good prices, and cheerfully served by the bar staff. Breakfast gave plenty of selections, although my only small criticism was the scrambled eggs, I like mine a little firmer! We couldn't have chosen this hotel on out budget, but the package deal gave us very good value for the money.

We recently spent 3 nights at the casselbergh whilst on a blustery, wet and cold tripto Bruges. The hotel was great. Very grand without being overbearing or ostentacious. Check in was efficient and the complimentary box of chocs for our anniversary was a nice touch! Our room was the basic/std type but was a good size, and well kitted out, as was the bathroom. No problems with housekeeping or cleanliness - everything was perfect. Breakfast offered all you needed and even though it was meant to end at 10.30am there were people turning up after this and still getting their brekkie. We got the opening 'welness' rate of €106 pn b&b with comp glass of cava. This was definitely value for money for a hotel of this standard in this location and especially considering how expensive everything else was in Bruges.

This hotel was everything we could have asked for. The reception desk was always courteous. Our room was the basic room, nothing fancy but it still was wonderful. We had a king sized bed which was very comfortable, the bathroom was newly remodeled. We had a tub and a separate shower. The location was great. Right by one of the main squares but not right on the square so it was still quiet. We had no complaints at all. We walked all over the city from this location.

It is about a 20 min walk from the train station, might be too far for some to walk but my husband and I walked it without much hassel. If we ever make it back to Bruges again, we will stay here for sure!

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Casselbergh for 3 nights this week and were delighted with our choice. The hotel is just off the main square in an elegant street of imposing former town houses. It has been newly refurbished to a high standard in a classic style with high ceilings, marble floors, antique-looking furniture, paintings etc. Our room was in the old part of the hotel (there would appear to be a new block at the back) and we may well have been the first guests to stay in it, so new and fresh were the furnishings which included a large, comfortable bed, chandelier, armchairs and flat screen TV. There was a large bathroom with bath and double size walk in shower with high quality fittings. Breakfast was on the lower ground floor and was served buffet style with fruit, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, cheese and cooked meats, pastries and so on, all very pleasant. This is a good place to stay in Bruges at a reasonable price for the standards of comfort and quality. It is hard to find fault but we did think that the duvets (of man made fibres?) were uncomfortably warm during the night and would be unsuitable for use during the summer months.

My boyfriend and I have spend the most magical weekend in Bruges celebrating our 1st anniversary together.
We wanted to stay in a nice hotel near the centre and Grand Hotel Casselbergh has exceeded all our expectations.
The location is excellent with only 2-3 min walk to the Markt Square.
Our taxi ride from the train station took 10 mins and cost 11 Euros but we walked to the station on our return trip and even with carrying our luggage it only took 20-25 mins.
The décor and appearance of the hotel is beautiful decadence but without any pretentiousness…with crystal chandeliers and striking staircases.
The room was very large with King size bed continental style – 2 beds together with mattress topper, 2 duvets, 4 pillows and very comfortable mattress. There was a mini bar and tea making facilities, 2 decent size wardrobes, desk, armchairs and coffee table. The bathroom was a room in its own right – with separate shower big enough for 2 people and bath tab.
The only inconvenience was that because of the shower screen position the floor tended to flood by the sink so you had to watch where you were stepping.
Lovely toiletries from L’Occitane.

The wellbeing facilities included small gym and lovely relaxation area with sauna, steam room and lounge chairs. After an afternoon of exploring Bruges in a rather fresh weather it was most welcome and appreciated.

The service was efficient enough although during the pick breakfast times had to attract attention to order tea and coffee.
The reception staff were polite and efficient. We have asked to recommend us a restaurant and book a table for Saturday night as all good places tend to get rather busy despite the prices…and were rewarded by a lovely meal in a small Belgium restaurant – Hemelrycke. The restaurant has a feel of a private dinning room with only few tables and exceptional service. The meals are typical Belgium cuisine and we highly recommend set menus that also include wine – each to compliment different course. The prices are more than reasonable for Bruges – we went for a top set menu consistent of 5 courses with wine and paid 54 Euros per person. The cheaper 3 course meals were ranging from 22 to 36 Euros.
www.hemelrycke.be have their current menus and contact details

I would highly recommend the hotel and will not hesitate to stay there again if we ever travel that way again.

Like many of the other reviewers I felt that the room was lovely. We stayed in the main house in a beautiful, well equipped room, fantastic shower, and to my delight L’Occitaine bath products. But nothing else in the hotel came up to the high standard of the rooms.

The breakfast was average; nothing seemed to have been replenished so we, being late risers, were sometimes met with curly cheese slices and partly dried out meats, but the fresh orange juice was excellent. The service was fine, as it was just tea and coffee service as nothing could be cooked to order. Not even taking a soft boiled egg from the buffet and cooking it until it was hard. A Belgian waffle or two wouldn’t have gone astray either!

The room cleanliness was ok, but there were hairs (not ours) in the bathroom when we arrived and they were still there on the 3rd day.

There really is no service in this hotel. The front office staff (who only appeared from the back off when you rang a bell for them) seemed to double up as bar staff and porters. I found them quite cold and superior. Maybe it was a cultural thing but there was no warmth whatsoever; I don’t think I got one smile. I think the hotel was pretty quiet when we visited so maybe they were on a skeleton staff. Although we did get some great restaurant recommendations from them –Christophe and Bistro Raymond

The hotel does not serve any meals apart from breakfast. Which makes me wonder how it has a 4 star rating at all, surely this is a pre-requisite. And to make matters worse, no option for room service. We asked at reception to be told we could not have room service breakfast but the in room materials said that continental breakfast was possible for, I think, a €10 charge, but it had to be booked with the reception the night before.

Each morning we had at least 2 knocks on our door from housekeeping, before 10:00am; even after we had the do not disturb on the door.

Check out is 11:00am, and as a very frequent traveller this is the first time I have come across this. We had a call from reception at 12:04 to remind us to leave but to be fair when we said we were not quite ready he said it was no problem to take our time.

If you are looking for a lovely room in a great location then this is the hotel for you, but if you are used to great service then I’d pass. I may go back to Bruges but not to this hotel.
