“First stay - not the last”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2011

Having stayed at many of the Accor hotels (Ibis & Novotel), we knew this was going to be more basic but it maintains the usual Accor standard. Location: a few minutes walk from Brugge train station, it's set in a square of residential flats - well signed from the station and there's a lift to get you up to the hotel level. The reception staff were friendly, efficient and, as usual, multi-lingual. Although we checked in early there was a room available and what a use of space! Our room was small but so brilliantly designed it was a delight. Everything you need for a short stay (it might become too small for more than a few nights). All very clean, light and airy. With a cheery wave from reception staff we headed off to De Halve Maan brewery (last one in Brugge) which has been on the to-do list for ages. About 15-20 mins walk from Etap. Another recommendation - must visit. The guided tour of the brewery is exceptional value for money - funny, knowledgable, and the ticket price (about 6 euro) includes a glass of Brugse Zot. Hang a right on leaving the brewery and you will shortly be at the Minnewater and the Beguinage. Take some time here (quietly) to appreciate centuries' old space full of history. Back at Etap - comfortable, quiet night's sleep. Shower - excellent. Breakfast also - lots of choice and good coffee. Enjoy.

The hotel is located just outside the train station and a short walking distance from the town center. You may think it will be very noise but the double glazing does the trick. It supplies your simple needs and anything else is at extra cost, such as internet access and breakfast.

Etap Hotel is very new, modern and makes efficient use of small spaces. The room is fairly tiny, but it has all the amenities you need. The shower is part of the room, separated only by a frosted shower stall. The toilet is in a separate little room. There is a tiny sink and window that is in the middle of the room also. It's a very interesting design and concept, and very affordable to boot. The view is not the greatest (train tracks), but it's ideal for those travelling with lots of luggage from the train station. The train station is 1 minute away (when you get out from the main doors of the station, walk a few hundred meters and you'll see an escalator to your right. Go up the escalator, walk a few hundred meters and you'll see an elevator and stairs to your right that lead right to the hotel). There is free internet at the hotel, but it's always busy. Breakfast is also provided but we didn't choose to eat at the hotel. Everything is very new and clean. The service was also quick and efficient - there were no issues with our reservation. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the centre of town (the Markt and the Belfry Tower), and it can either go through the Park and the Lake of Love, or you may stroll through the residential neighbourhood and reach the same destination in a bit of a shorter time. Either way, the walk is very pleasant. If you choose not to take the scenic route through the park, I would recommend trying out a great cafe called ''t Oost" (http://www.t-oost.be/) that is on Oostmeers 88 (from train station, across the main street and about 300 m straight down, and on the left).
Overall, this hotel had good value for money and I would definitely consider staying here again.

There probably aren't many places in Bruges offering better value for money. It is outside the heart of the city, but it's a very pleasant ten or fifteen minute walk into the centre.

The rooms are small, but modern and well designed. As one or two reviews have mentioned the frosted glass shower cubicle is in the room rather than a separate bathroom, but the beds are double rather than twin so anyone who wants more privacy is unlikely to be sharing a room anyway. The shower itself was good, and there's a fun surprise when you turn it on for the first time.

Our room looked out over the railway station but we weren't disturbed at all by any train noise, probably because the weather wasn't very warm so we were able to keep the window shut overnight.

The employee who checked us in seemed friendly and polite, apart from that we had hardly any dealings with the staff; we paid on arrival and the room locks use a 6 digit code so we didn't even need to check out. We didn't try the breakfast, which costs Eur7 per person.

I was welcomed by a very unfriendly - completely unapproachable staff, that simple fact gave me feel unwelcomed and as if I was bothering them for making them work. Will really think it twice before ever recomending it to anyone or going back to the same hotel.
