I wish I had read the reviews properly before we booked this hotel because I would have listened to those of you who spoke politely about problems to do with the renovation this hotel is undergoing.
Here are the positive points:
The hotel is situated really conveniently in the centre of Bruges and it is easy to walk to all of the main attractions from here. It is also surrounded by some lovely restaurants.
The owners have great taste in interior decor. It has been lovingly and beautifully restored with great care. The rooms are comfortable if a bit over furnished for their size.
They give free wi-fi and an ipad in each room which is excellent - thank you!
The breakfast is good and the room you take this in is again beautiful which is a good start to the day.
The staff and the owners are without exception warm, polite, helpful, efficient and caring. Nothing is too much trouble for them.
We were woken up most mornings at around 0730 with banging, noise of machinery being used, even the walls being plastered or smoothed down right next to our room. Rooms were being renovated above us and next door to us. And if you wanted to have a peaceful nap in the day you could not escape the noise which was intrusive.
There was a strong smell of paint fumes which was inevitable as the renovations were either just finished or still underway.
Little problems were still being ironed out such as a strong unpleasant smell in the bathroom all the time, the lighting in the bedroom was oddly configured so that you could not have just one side of the bedroom light on - it was all the lights in the room or nothing. There wasn't a working dimmer so again at night it was hard to relax and read in bed.
On the final day we moved rooms as the noise and smell in the bathroom were not getting any better. This was a more comfortable night. To be fair to the owners, they listened, they reacted and they tried to make things better - they were always friendly and approachable. But if you are looking forward to a short break, it matters that it is genuinely restful. Which is why my advice would be that this hotel will be fantastic, it will be a joy to stay in, the owners deserve to be successful but for those of us who stayed there during its renovations, it was a disappointment.
