“Hip hotel, lovely staff, great breakfasts!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2009

My partner had booked a package Eurostar package to Bruges for my birthday weekend - which is also Valentine's weekend it would turn out to be the weekend we got engaged! So quite a big weekend! The package included hotel accommodation at the very highly rated Heritage Hotel. However, when we arrived at the Heritage Hotel they explained they had over booked and would be transferring us over to their sister hotel - Hotel Montanus. I was pretty annoyed at this - having specifically chosen Hotel Heritage after the great reviews on Trip Advisor.
However, the manager gave us glasses of champagne and chocolates whilst we waited for our taxi and booked us a restaurant for dinner that night. We were also upgraded to a package including breakfast at Hotel Montanus.
Anyway when we eventually got to Hotel Montanus, my fears were washed away as the hotel and staff were lovely! Very hip but calm decor - lovely salon to sit and read in, tiny but funky bar area and a conservatory like breakfast area.
Our room was also lovely and huge - as was the bathroom. My only complaint was the bed - was actually twin beds pushed together - not exactly romantic!
Location wise the hotel is about a 5 to 10 minute walk from the main attractions so not in the thick of it but certainly walkable.
Breakfast was buffet style & yummy - choice of typical continental bread, cheese, cold meat along with hot bacon, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs. Also cereal and pastries.
We had a couple of drinks from the bar at the end of both evenings - you had to call the receptionist over to serve the drinks but no biggie - we had the bar to ourselves which was nice!
Having looked back over the reviews on this site - I think the hotel has recently been refurbished. We stayed in the main house not in one of the garden rooms.

This is a good 3 star hotel. A clean well heated hotel with a lovely buffet breakfast and helpful staff. We arrived quite late at night and were more than pleasantly surprised by the hotel attendant who took the time to show us to our room and point out restaurants on a map who would accommodate us at such a late hour. The only snag during the whole trip was what we considered overcharging of the hotel bar account; we were charged for 3 drinks and are adamant we only had 2. This aside it is a very good place from which to enjoy the truly beautiful city of Bruges.

I am strict vegetarian, who doesn't eat fish, porn, sea food, beef, meat and even eggs. Hotel Montanus staff went out of way to cook vegetarian food for us. They even cooked outside food for our sake. That was something, not expected from any European Hotel!!

Just returned from a lovely 3 day stay in Bruges where we opted for the Montanus. We paid £130 for 3 nights through hotelconnect.com and noticed when we got to the hotel that the rooms go for around 150 Euros per night so we definitely got a great deal.

We arrived quite late at night and were pleasantly surprised by the hotel attendant who took the time to show us to our room and point out restaurants on a map who would accommodate us at such a late hour. The decor in the main hotel is fresh, clean, modern and really easy on the eye. The room was pretty small and felt a little cramp but, again, it was clean and fresh and the shower....WOW! I had to peel myself off the wall it was that powerful!

Location wise, you're talking a 5 minutes into the centre of Bruges.

All was going swimmingly until we returned to our hotel room after our first day in the city. The room was suitably refreshed by the cleaner with clean linen and towels. After getting ready and prior to leaving the room to go out for the evening, the girlfriend noticed her expensive perfume wasn't in front of the mirror where she had left it in the morning. We searched high and low but to no avail and even questioned our own sanity as we were finding it difficult to come to terms with the fact that her perfume had gone walkies when the room had been secure all day, presumably, having only been accessd by the cleaner. Had we been the victims of theft from our hotel room??? We had both seen it before we left the room in the morning. Reported it to the attendant who had welcomed us to the hotel when we had arrived on our first night but he couldn't have been less interested saying he would speak to whoever had been in the room. We said that we did not want anyone else in our room for the remainder of our stay and unfortunately, felt awkward walking around the hotel from then on. On the flip side, the attendants were very helpful organising our taxi back to the train station. In conclusion, a satisfying stay in one of Europe's most beautiful cities which was regrettably marred by having our personal belongings stolen from us by the hotel staff and bad customer service when it was needed most. Or else we would have given the hotel full marks.
