Golden Tulip De' Medici Hotel
Ranked #40 of 97 Hotels in Bruges
Reviewed 28 July 2008

Paid 100E for 1 night. Delighted with the accommodation - spotlessly clean bathroom & room. Air-conditioning. The American breakfast included a hot buffet as well as cold meats, cheeses, cereals, pastries etc. Very good quality. The hotel was very quiet though it was busy.
It's a little bit out of the centre but only a 15 minute pleasant stroll along the canal.
I can't understand why it's only 51st out of 112 hotels in Bruges. I would not hesitate to stay here again and I would recommend it to anyone.
For good food & good beer - try "Cambrinus" on Philipstockstraat, off the north east corner of Markt. They have a stock of 400 beers & were able to produce every one we ordered - and we never had the same beer twice. Try Kasteel. Food is good too - not like the tourist menus on the Markt & elsewhere.

My fiancée and I stayed in Golden Tulip for two nights 18-20 January 2008, booked just a few days before via Eurostar's website.

Travelling with train from London to Bruges is very easy and comfortable - much better than flying. The cab-ride from the train station to the hotel only took around five minutes.

Checking the map beforehand, it looked like the hotel was quite far away from the main square, but in reality it is less than ten minutes walk along the canals. The hotel itself is also located next to a canal with quite a nice view.

Check-in was quite quick, and our room (116) was in the main building and not in the new wings. The room was big with high ceilings and a nice view over the canal. As you can see from the pictures the decor is a bit dated, but it was not run down in any way. The room also had a table with two comfortable chairs were we ate dinner one night.

The bathroom had his&hers sinks, which we quite liked, and we potentially avoided some arguments that way ;-).

As mentioned in other reviews, the 30-channel TV has porn channels and children's TV channels basically next to each-other, so care should be taken if there are kids in the room.

The hotel restaurant is Japanese (called Koto), and it was unfortunately fully booked while we were there. Booking in advance is essential, especially during high-season. We ordered room service from it one night, and the food was quite good. The quiet hotel bar (good drinks selection) also has a food menu with OK prices, but we don't think the food was very good there.

Breakfast was self-service and adequate, and to get to the breakfast room you have to walk around a nice Japanese garden.

Many shops were unfortunately closed in Bruges in January, but even so I definitely prefer Bruges to Brussels. If we go again, we wouldn't mind staying in this hotel again, though our first choice would probably be somewhere more central.

Stayed for 3 nights in June 2008, in a double room overlooking the Japanese garden. Room was clean, comfortable and with a large bathroom. Would have liked tea and coffee making facilities in the room. There is a church which starts ringing the bell at 7 am, and every half hour, rings again, but you get used to it. Otherwise, it is extremely quiet.

Breakfast was very good, plentiful buffet, including hot and cold. Complimentary tea and coffee in the lounge in the afternoons, but it was not replenished, and was not very hot to begin with. The lounge bar was closed, and if it had been open, it would have had plenty of customers. Some people brought their own wine, beer etc. Also, the bar closed quite early in the evenings.

All the staff we met were friendly, and efficient. One day it rained heavily, and we hoped the hotel would supply umbrellas on loan, but the receoptionist said they did not. This would have been helpful, and a good advertisement if they had the hotel name on them.

Hotel is ideally situated for the centre of Brugges, close enough to walk, but set away by a canal, nice and quiet, not the canal with the boat trips on, which is very touristy. Lots of nice bars and restaurants nearby.

We hope to come again.

Pretty looking hotel in quiet location. Situated on canal bank a short walk from the popular market squares.
We visited Bruges on an extended ferry crossing (staying one night only). Would recommend guests make prior arrangements to drop luggage off at hotel before check in, or leave cases in locker at public transport station if arriving in Bruges in the morning.
Our room was not available until after 3.30pm on day of arrival.
Communal facilities were generally satisfactory eg Lounge, bar and dining room.
Bedroom *very* disappointing. Curtains were very dirty. Carpet very badly marked. Wallpaper stained and torn. Tiles in bathroom were cracked and had black mould between the tiles. Shower splashed onto side of the bath and water ran onto the floor unless shower head was very low.
Tradesmen using guest elevators.
Not at all what one would expect from a 4 star city centre hotel.
Breakfast is self service and more than adequate.
We were able to leave luggage at hotel until 5pm on day of departure, although this was not in a secure room.

The location of this hotel is not too bad, just 10 minutes walk to the main square in Brugges. In a cold week in January it was very empty, hence the competitive room rate. The room was OK, a standard Tulip room. The hotel has a Japanese theme with a Japanese restaurant also which looked closed. Even the bar was deserted in the evening and I had to find someone to pour a drink. Neither are big problems in a town with so many bars and restaurants though. Breakfast was adequate but not outstanding. The hotel has its own car park at €15 per day, which is conveninet but a high cost compared with the public car parks around Brugges. Internet is also expensive, supplied by Swisscom. The staff were friendly enough but I had the feeling that the hotel was just ticking over, which it probably was in a town more geared to tourists than business people. At the rate I paid it was good value. I would be reluctant to pay the normal rate however.

Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights returned on the 2nd Feb. Had a room at the rear, so view not too good but the comfortable and clean room made up for that. Check in was very efficient, breakfasts were really good everything you could want and the location was right on the canal and only a 10mins walk away to all the sites of the beautiful city of Bruges. If we returned to Bruges would stay at this hotel again.
