Review of Azalea Hotel
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 21 Jul 2009
After staying the previous night in a four star hotel this was a bit of a shock. We were offered a very small room which was dated and dusty. The bathroom was ok and looked like it had recently been renewed but overall i would say it was a 2 star hotel. Not impressed i'm afraid.
However with a refurbishment and some sound proofing between rooms this could be a lovely hotel in a good position.

We couldn't have asked for friendlier, more helpful staff than we had at the Hotel Azalea. They went out of their way to make sure our needs were tended to. The morning desk clerk was very helpful in describing her favorite things to see and do in town. When we asked the breakfast waiter about getting an early morning wakeup call the next morning, it seemed that within 15 minutes every other staff member we saw knew what we wanted and were anxious to see it happen.

The hotel is not in the middle of town, but close enough to it to be convenient. It is on a side street, providing a quiet location. It is about a 20 minute walk from the train station and a 7 minute walk from the central square.

The hotel itself is in a old building befitting Brugge. As one enters you pass beneath a grand circular staircase to get to the reception desk. Our room was at the top of the staircase, which creaked with every step. It was comfortably large, with beautiful wood furnishings of a style appropriate for the building's age, all in great shape. Conversely, the bathroom was equipped with modern fixtures. Everything was very clean. The bed was comfortable. The windows could be opened easily for ventilation. It was quiet at night. Wireless internet connectivity was available in the room. The old fashioned door locks may not be satisfactory to security-conscious folks.

The breakfast buffet was served in an stylish dining room. It had an ample selection of eggs, bacon, various rolls, cold cuts and cheeses and fruit. The service was excellent. My wife said that the hot chocolate was delicious! For other meals numerous restaurants were within a few minutes walk from the hotel.

If you want a modern hotel, this isn't it. If you want character and style, you can be comfortable here.

Great location in Brugge with attentive, friendly staff. Room was very spacious and clean well appointed bathrooms. Our room faced the street which got a bit noisy the first night but it got better. Breakfast is included-nice healthy options. It is an older building so don't expect glitz--but it was perfect for us.

This places is not the worst...but in Bruge, pay 10 more Euros and you can do WAYYY better, ie, Cote Cannal and St. Niilass, which we passed in Bruge. I would recommend the B and Bs in Brugge as they are cheaper than hotels and very cute.
The location here was too far west near the modern ring road. There are more charming places to stay further east away from the main tourist drag.
On the upside the hotel breakfast and breakfast room were very good. The receptionist was also very nice and helpful.
The room was a bit dingy, set up in a strange way which obstructed what would have been a nice view of the canal. Avoid ground floor rooms. The walls are also thin. You can here EVERYTHING.
Spend a couple of xtra euros and do something 4 star.
Another hint: REFTERS restaurant. make a reservation.

Just got back from a four day mini break to Bruges and stayed in the Hotel Azalea. What a very special find, a small family run hotel in the heart of the city yet quiet, charming and prettily placed, overlooking a canal.
The rooms are of average size, well equipped and with modern, spotlessly clean bathrooms. I recommend our room, room 17, at the top of a grand curving staircase and with delightful views over the canal. All the staff are extremely friendly and very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was buffet style, very plentiful and a pot of decaffeinated coffee was freshly brewed for us each day.
The hotel is in a wonderful, central location with shops, restaurants and tourist attractions just up the road. It has a classical and traditional feel in decor and certainly a hotel to be recommended to others. A lovely stay!

My husband & I have just come back from a 3 day stay in Brugge with some friends. The hotel is not how it looks or as described on their website. It is tired, and needs a refurbishment. It is not a 4* hotel as stated but a 3*.The breakfast was continental which I enjoy but very limited food available.
The owner was very friendly and helpful but that doesnt make up for the hotel. It was in an ideal spot to walk about Brugge, thankfully we were out all day otherwise on arrival I would have moved to another hotel.I have visited Brugge on many occassions and stayed at the Sofitel(now the NH Brugge) I wish we had stayed elsewhere
