Owner description: The 115 metres high brick tower of the Church of Our Lady is a perfect illustration of the craftsmanship of Bruges' artisans. The church displays a valuable art collection: Michelangelo's world-famous Madonna and Child, countless paintings, 13th-century painted sepulchres and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold.

Church under restoration, but we had to see the Michaelangelo Madonna and Child. The work disrupted the visit a little, but well worth a visit.

Despite the restoration work going on, this is a must see. Church is free but you do pay to go into the section that contains the Madonna and Child by Michelangelo (the only Michelangelo outside of Italy).

Despite the renovations going on and more than half the church blocked off to visitors, I still enjoyed the visit. The reduced entry, due to the renovations was appreciated. I came and saw the statue I wanted to see, Leonardos of Madonna and Child, amazing.

The Madonna of Bruges is a beautiful marble sculpture by Michelangelo of Mary with the infant Jesus.

The sculpture was removed twice from Belgium after its initial arrival. The first was in 1794, the second removal was in 1944, during World War II, with the retreat of German soldiers, who smuggled the sculpture to Germany enveloped in mattresses in a Red Cross truck. It was found two years later in Altaussee/Austria and again returned. It now sits in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges, Belgium.

This was portrayed in the George Clooney directed "The Monuments Men." The work is also notable in that it was the only sculpture by Michelangelo to leave Italy during his lifetime.

Having visited Bruges before, I'd missed visiting this church, so I'm so glad I went on my latest trip.
Although there are some renovations taking place, they don't spoil the atmosphere of this lovely , historic church.
The Michelangelo sculpture is perfect-and has such an interesting history.
Definitely worth a visit.-I liked this church a lot.
