“Poor exhibit format, rude staff”
Reviewed 25 May 2013

It's a museum meant for locals--and there's nothing wrong with that. But no matter where you're from, you'd struggle looking at the displays in the low lighting.

We entered by mistake, confusing the place with the nearby (and similarly named) art museum (Groeningmusuem). After a few minutes of walking past dimly-lit old manuscripts, we asked a guard how to find the paintings. He said there were none--that the art museum was across the way. We walked back to the entrance and asked to return our tickets, but the ticket seller refused to refund our entry fee since we had spent almost 10 minutes in the museum.

Yes, the initial mistake was ours, but the attitude--an exhibit of interest to Dutch-speakers only and no flexibility for the tourists who must be the mainstay of the town's economy--is a bigger mistake than ours.

“The building is amazing, the museum is not so interesting”
Reviewed 7 May 2013

This building itself is amazing, really worth a visit.
Unfortunately there is nothing written in English, which made our visit almost pointless. The audio guide help with some items, but for the majority you are left not knowing what you are looking at.

“Interesting Building But Less Interesting Exhibits”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

This is an interesting building containing old, but less interesting exhibits. (Yes, the exhibits are labelled in Flemish, but there are free leaflets available at the pay desk describing them all in several other languages.) The rooms were pretty dark, which meant reading anything wasn’t easy. Each room had a theme – love, religious devotion etc.

Not one of the better museums.

“Interesting books & manuscripts”
Reviewed 19 April 2013

Superb building, wonderful collection of old books and manuscripts, though sadly all labeling is only in Dutch. Loads of school parties, but they seem well behaved enough!

“Great building, great museum”
Reviewed 17 April 2013

This is one of the places you should visit when coming to Bruges and you like museums. Spend some time to take in the architecture of the building and read up on the history of the location.
