“Truly a work of art!”

Owner description: The Brugse Vrije is the former law court of Bruges. It now houses written history of Bruges as the city archives are based here. Take a walk through the old court to the renaissance hall, which was once the alderman's chamber. Here, the highlight is a monumental 16th century wood, marble, and alabaster fireplace known as the Emperor Charles V fireplace, designed by Lanceloot Blondeel. (tickets via Stadhuis)

“Truly a work of art!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2013

WIth the canals and Rozenhoedkaai, most people would skip this place, but how can you? It's a work of art with wonderful craftsmanship! It's a symbol of unity of Belgium and if you read more about it, you would understand the value of stopping here. However, not for people who do not enjoy history. Heard a few people complaining about how boring it was, so if you're not into history, at least enjoy the beautiful building from the outside!

“An easily-overlooked gem in Bruges!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2013

With all the incredible things to see in Bruges, it would be easy to skip the Palace of the Liberty of Bruges. But you will not want to, believe me - while a slight thing in the sense that it just consists of one room in a courthouse, it is incredibly rich, incredibly wonderful.

One of the few remaining attractions with an audio guide, the guide gives you great detail on everything in the room - the paintings adorning the walls, the gold ink well on top of a desk, and of course, the incredible fireplace with its ornate 16th century wooden carvings of Charles V and his family above the mantelpiece. You have to be a pretty jaded traveler not to just sit there in awe of this incredible work of art, listening to the guide describe in detail every aspect of the carving. An additional joy of the audio guide for me is that the selections are ornamented by music from the period.

“Mistery palace”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 December 2012

The liberty of Bruges is this important palace. Running a daytour in town this spot got my bronze medal for all the place I've been in the city. The liberty in Belgium is remarcable with the mix of races, ethnicity and nationalities.

“Dazzles in the sunlight.”

Beautiful building that amazes us each time we visit. The beauty of the white stone and gold leaf work always sparkles in the sun and is an delight tucked into the corner of the burgh square.

“Hidden away but a must to visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 October 2012

A contributor said "one very impressive room" and added "allow five minutes" What an attention span! We were in there for about 20mins listening to the fascinating audio guide. It has the most amazing fireplace we've ever seen. It's through a couple of stiff doors just to the left of the Basilica of the Holy Blood, but certainly worth it!
