Owner description: The Brugse Vrije is the former law court of Bruges. It now houses written history of Bruges as the city archives are based here. Take a walk through the old court to the renaissance hall, which was once the alderman's chamber. Here, the highlight is a monumental 16th century wood, marble, and alabaster fireplace known as the Emperor Charles V fireplace, designed by Lanceloot Blondeel. (tickets via Stadhuis)

Reviewed 11 July 2014

The ticket was included with the ticket to the city hall museum. Both were quite beautiful and worth a quick stop. The carving was amazing.

“Beautiful fireplace”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

This site was included in our Brugge Museum Card. It once housed the city's courts. The room is beautiful and the fireplace with its intricately carved wood mantel is worth seeing.

“Lovely Carvings”
Reviewed 27 February 2014

This small museum room is included as part of the Town Hall visitor ticket. The black marble chimney piece/fire surround is beautiful. The ceiling is amazing, so much wood and the carved oak panels paying homage to Emperor Charles V. are well worth taking a long look at to take in how much work was involved in the carvings. There are a few paintings in the room along with the Emperor's throne. If you like carved wood, this small room will amaze you.

“Great woodcarving”
Reviewed 31 October 2013

Not a huge amount to see, but the carved fireplace is impressive. If your time is limited, not the number 1 attraction, but worth a look. Combined ticket with the Town Hall, which has some good bits.
