“Walls made of paper - take ear plugs”
Reviewed 7 July 2011

I booked this on expedia and it was fairly cheap. It's a lovely location by the canal and when you first walk in it is lovely however, the room was disappointing. Very worn furnishings and bedding. The bathroom was quite water damaged, presumably due to the lack of shower screen, and the toilet was elderly and rickety.
The entrance hall was beautiful but everything else was disappointing.
The worst thing of all was the paper thin walls, I was awoken the first morning by someone going to toilet by my head the other side of the wall, not that romantic I must say and neither was being kept up all night by people shouting to eachother inside the hotel.
Breakfast was fine although the waitresses were slow to come over and offer tea or coffee.
I wasn't too upset as I didn't pay loads but if you paid a 4 star price you'd be gutted.

A really good place stay as part of our mini cruise from Hull. The hotel is in a really good location by one of the main canals, an easy walk into the central area but far enough away to be quite on an evening. We had a lovely big room in the old part of the building with a view over the canal. Breakfast was perfectly adequate and the staff were very helpful.

Room Tip: Try to get into the old part of the hotel

Have just had a few days at this hotel with my wife and a small group of friends. Our room was excellent, overlooking the canal which runs right past the hotel. Very clean, plenty of space, comfortable bed, big bathroom (bath, but no shower). Ample continental breakfasts and helpful staff. Location is ideal for exploring the city on foot, being 10 minutes gentle walk from the main square but far enough away to avoid the crowds. A couple of good restaurants nearby in Jan van Eyck Square for meals. Quiet at night for sleeping. Only (slight) drawback is that there's no lift so be prepared for some stair climbing, but that's no big deal compared to the advantages. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would go back.

Room Tip: Go for a room overlooking the canal.

Old and charming hotel with great location next to a canal. Rooms lacking a bit - a few touches like a bigger TV, a waterboiler/coffee maker, a minibar, a safe, a hairdrier and a shower curtain would help a lot. Also the walls were paperthin - expect the neighbours to hear every noise you make. Nice to sit next to waterline in the basement breakfast restaurant with swans swimming two feet from your head.

Room Tip: Ask for top floor - rooms 21 to 23

Felt more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. Had great old world charm. The rooms were huge with large windows. Breakfast consisted of basic cold foods like cereal, meats and cheese. They had wifi in the lobby and a cable for the room (there may have been a fee but it was reasonable). It is located off a canal in a quiet part of town, about a 5 minute walk to the Markt. There are hotels located in the heart of town so it just depends on what you are looking for. I felt it was a little farther out of the heart of town than I would have liked but my travel partner loved being in a peaceful, quiet part of town a few minutes out of the center. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

-Most positive:
Cozy place, specialy the nice breakfast room. Nice employers.

-Most negative:
No shower curtain!!! No hairdryer. Breakfast only average, no fruit, scrambled eggs, cakes, etc. Small and old TV with non-working remote.

I expected more from a 4 stars hotel.

We booked a 3 night mini cruise sailing from Hull on Friday evening and decided to book accommodation at Hotel Ter Brughe for Saturday night. We were very pleasantly surprised upon arrival as the hotel is situated alongside a canal in a lovely quiet part of the city, yet within easy walking distance of the main square. Our room was clean and fresh with beamed ceilings, nice decor and large en-suite. The included buffet breakfast was served in the vaulted cellar overlooking the canal with a good variety of food and drinks on offer. Staff were very helpful and hairdryers can be obtained from reception with no charge.

Room Tip: No lift so we were happy with 1st floor room.
