If you want all the mod cons and amenities, don't stay in a hotel that's a listed building with a history going back several hundred years. There is no lift. The wooden-beamed rooms creak. The whole place is noisy as only really old buildings can be. Don't complain. Instead, bask in its history, charm and quaintness. Good old-fashioned baths are favoured over showers (thank goodness), although there is a hand-shower for those who think a bathtub is nothing more than a glorified shower basin.
I've read other reviews by others who say that the hotel smells. Actually, it's not the hotel. It's the city, but not all of the time. It's the same in every ancient town and city that's built with a network of canals with slow-moving or still waters. Venice and Amsterdam have the same problem. Get over it - thousands of other tourists do so without a fuss.
I have to admit to being slightly unsure about this hotel precisely because of the many negative comments made on this site, but the charm of the place won me over. However, one complaint is that it was just too warm for us. Don't go for a budget room. Instead, pay a little more and have one of the lovelier canal-facing rooms. Unlike other reviewers, we found the staff to be helpful and courteous at all times. A little courtesy from guests can go a long way.
