“What a lovely hotel!”
Reviewed 10 November 2010

Well - having read a few of the reviews, my friend and I were a little sceptical about choosing this hotel for our trip to Bruges. We shouldn't have worried, as this hotel was excellent!

We arrived on the Friday morning at about 11am, after making good time from Calais. Parked in the underground car park, and went up to reception to ask if it was ok to leave the car for a few hours until the 3pm check in. Well, Inga on reception couldn't have been more helpful and we were checked in then and there.

Was a bit of a trek to find the hotel room - but that was because we had one of the newer rooms which was lovely. Comfy bed, clean bathroom and a nice view over some of the beautiful buildings that are abundent in Bruges.

Breakfast was excellent, with options for hot and cold food. So unsure where the negative comments came from.

Finally, the TV - not sure why people are bothered about English speaking channels when you go abroad for a holiday! If you want to watch English TV, why not stay at home! Anyway - there were plenty of options with lots of English-speaking programmes with subtitles for Belgians added.

All in all - a lovely hotel, and definitely somewhere where we would visit again.

This hotel was a real find and much, much better than I anticipated ! I was expecting a glorified travelodge full of coach travellers with budget style functional rooms but we were delighted by what we found. The hotel is perfectly situated in a quiet street within the 'walking tour' area of the city as identified on the map supplied by reception on arrival. The only passing traffic is the odd car and a few horses pulling carts along the cobbled street outside. The staff at reception were charming and couldnt be more helpful. Our triple room (105) was excellent and much more contemporary and stylish than photos on some web sites had lead us to believe. The beds were the best we had slept in and the cleanliness of the room could not be faulted. The lighting system was more amusing than annoying - we were spoilt for choice for lighting effects ! We didnt eat in the hotel as we found 2 lovely restaurants at the end of the road (although you are spoilt for choice all over the town !) and could find breakfast from the bakery opposite the hotel ! Another bonus was the secure car park directly underneath the hotel , which although a little pricy at 15 euros a night gave us peace of mind and storage for all the beer and chocolate we brought to take home !! This was the perfect short break, especially in the Autumn - Bruges has it all - Beautiful Scenery, Atmosphere, Attractions, Romance, Good Food , Friendly people and all in walking distance from this hotel ! As I'm writing this I cant wait to go back !!!

Travelled from U K on organised trip via Eurostar. Pleasant Hotel down a side street but within easy walking distance of all the main tourist attractions, Quiet location, very near to brewery and canals, with a small pleasant bar and open inner courtyard. Rooms clean, average size, and comfortable with a fridge, free safety deposit box and hospitality tray. Pleasant staff, nice breakfast, though limited choice of hot food . Plenty of reasonably priced restaurants, cafe's and bars within close proximity.

Just returned from an enjoyable 3 night stay in Bruges at the Academie hotel. The hotel was exactly what I expected from a 4 star continental hotel. Modern bedroom and bathroom. TV,safe, fridge, coffee/tea making facilities and plenty of wardrobe space.
Breakfast is buffet style with a very comprehensive selection of breakfast items in a purpose built room. All the staff spoke very good english ( as did everyone we met in the shops/restaurants in Bruges ) and were helpful when required.
I would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel and would recommend this hotel for value for money and a good location.

Rated as a 4 star but must only be as a Belgium rating... would say its as good a 3 star as you could expect.
Read other ratings before we left and were slightly worried but need not have been.
Staff were very helpful and could not fault them.
Breakfast was as previous reviews a buffet affair but totally acceptable, the hot selection was limited, to scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, sausages and funny small pancakes.
Rest was perfectly fine.
Only downside we had was people in roon next to us had TV on very loud and noise came through the walls very easily, so maybe an issue re sound insulation.
Hotel bar was small and not used much, prices fair as compared to others in Bruges.
Short 5-10 minute walk from main square depending which way you go and how long you window gaze, but Bruges is for walking around and as such location is fine.
there is a small Carrefour supermarket just round the corner great for everything hotel rooms do have a fridge with small freezer section so fill up up fresh milk for you r coffee and teas, also beers!!
There is a super small restaurant called The Terrace just by the canal at the end of Gentshof, with seating outside if weather permitting, good home food and beer choice with reasonable prices,I would return.
There is also a very small cellar Irish Bar called The Druids Cellar just off Main Square, run by Drew good fun and very reasonable beer prices , can be smokey though.
All in all would return.

The hotel location is excellent, the rooms are spacious and clean. However, you are made to feel like a commodity rather than a paying guest, the staff really need to make more effort to engage with their guests and smile occassionally. The breakfast room is an oppressive cellar, you get a dish, a plate and a cup and saucer that you are expected to recycle. Hot drinks are available from a vending machine, the fruit is all tinned fruit and the cooked food is scrambled egg and mini sausages. Everything seems geared around making the least possible work for the staff, it most definitely does not warrant 4 stars.

This was definitely NOT a 4* hotel.More like a travel lodge minus the trimmings.Tatty entrance and lack lustre reception and public areas.Breakfast in the dungeon dining room was very basic (tinned fruit) and boring.Staff never smiled and gave the impression they didn't want to be bothered with guests. Bedrooms again very basic with plastic throw away cups and 2 euros to replenish the hospitality tray.TVs that on a good day you may be able to get an English channel. The only positve was the location...very central.
