“Bad and Good”
Reviewed 18 September 2008

My small family stayed there for a long weekend. We booked the rooms via their website and had problems with our reservation. Please, please, please call to confirm your reservation and you will probably receive far better care than we did.

When it was realized that we had jacked up the reservation the owner was very short with us and stayed that way the whole weekend. We never felt comfortable or welcome.

The hotel itself is absolutely nothing special. We stayed in the attic or the 4th floor with a tiny little room, tiny little bathroom and windows you could not look out of if you were over 5'3" tall. The bed was comfortable and the place was for the most part clean. The "family" rooms are on the top floors and if you've ever had to hike your luggage and a two year old up 4 flights of steep stairs you know why we won't be staying there again. If you have the slightest physical disability request a 1st floor so you only have one flight to climb. Breakfast was your standard European spread where the only thing hot is the boiled egg.

I was worried that it was going to be a noisy neighborhood as there is a hostel next door but it was fairly quiet. It is a quick 10-15 minute walk to the city center and right off of a fairly chic shopping street. There is a plethora of restaurants in the general area- but be aware very few are family (or two year old) friendly.

There is no parking at the hotel and the owner told us to park at the train station for 2.50 Euro and was about a 10-15 minute walk back. However, you can park in the city center lot, pay 8.70 Euro and have a 3-5 minute walk. A lot easier with luggage!!

Brugge was a pretty little city that is easy to walk. I encourage you to take the carriage ride first. It is a great way to get your bearings.

I can't not recommend this hotel, but if you do choose it, please confirm your reservation with the hotel, ask for a first floor room, and don't take your children.

If you are considering a trip to Brugge (Bruges) check out the Groeninghe Hotel. A wonderfully run family hotel, only 100 yards from the impressive T'Zand square with shops and restaurants. The owner Laurence (despite the spelling she is a she !!) is just perfection as a hostess. The beds are comfortable and clean and breakfast is excellent. Forget your flash hotels - you will not get the flavour of this wonderful city until you stay at the Groeninghe.
Trust me.
Give me a call on [--] - I will be happy to heap further praise on this hotel !!!!
Regards David

The hotel was great. The lady that runs the hotel Laurence has a lovely friendly personality and the rooms have a great character. The breakfast that is included was excellent and plentiful (european style with cold meats, cheeses, bread and conserves, yoghurt, cereals and fresh fruit). The location is also handy to everything (be warned however that with lots of laneways its easy to lose your orientation in Brugge!!). The rooms are serviced daily and were clean and bathroom modern. There are stairs but they are wide and not too steep (compared with Amsterdaym!!) but I'm sure if mobility is an issue you can request a lower level - Laurence is only too happy to help. While stopping by reception one day, an English couple were returning to the hotel and mentioned that they wanted to come back because Laurence and her hotel was so lovely.......says it all really.

Comfortable bed, cosily painted walls, quiet, city center, nice owner. We also enjoyed the breakfast. Exercise well to haul your suitcases upstairs. Brugge is a fairy tale!

Three of us stayed two nights in the Groeninghe in May 2008. The hotel was clean and pleasantly decorated, the rooms were comfortable and well-appointed, breakfast was generous and the owners were extremely helpful and friendly.
The hotel is within easy walking distance of all the main attractions and is ideal as a base for visiting the city and I have no hesitation in recommending it. (One note, the showers in the rooms we used had a big step up into them, maybe if you have mobility problems it would be best to check beforehand).

The Hotel Groeninghe is a lovely small hotel, and provides excellent value for travellers visiting Bruges. The hotel is within walking distance from the train station, tucked away on a quiet street, but also within an easy walk of the main square. The rooms range from medium-sized to small, and are attractively decorated. My room - a single - was on the top floor and appeared to have been recently renovated. The bathroom was brand new and spotless. The breakfast is more than complete - lovely rolls, meats, cheeses, cereals, juices and eggs.

The owners of the hotel could not have been more wonderful - charming, friendly, natives of Brugges.

Note: like most hotels in this part of the world, the stairs are steep, and there is NO elevator. Not a big deal, but pack light!

  • Liked — The lovely owners of the hotel who went out of their way to be helpful!
  • Disliked — Having to leave!

Stayed at this hotel for the first time at the beginning of December. Having stayed in Bruges some 30+ times previously I can honestly say that this was the best. The owners could not have been more friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts were very good and the accommodation of a good standard for such a small hotel. The location could not have been better. I could not fault this hotel or the hospitality in the slightest, so much so that we booked for the same weekend in 2008 just before we left. All I can say is stay here, you won't regret it.
