“Not Worth The Money”
Reviewed 30 September 2011

Found this hotel on a booking web site price for a family 170euro with breakfast I know if you book through these sites the hotel pays between 15% up to 30% commission as we have a hotel in the UK, so I phoned to booked and explained I had seen this price was told no problem which of cause it should not be as I was saving them 50 euro, I was informed that the underground parking was another 10 euro so when my confirmation came through for 180 I assumed I had paid for the parking as well, but infact I had to pay this at the car park on departure!! So I ended up paying 10 euro more when I saved the hotel 50 euro commission GREAT I called the hotel and they simply could not care and said I should have booked through the web site where I saw the lesser price.
The room was so small in was unbelievable with a second level for the kids quite frankly I am amazed they have been allowed to let these room with health and safetly and I have no idea what you would do if there was a fire.
Breakfast would have been OK had they not run out of all the cooked items

Dear,

The commission we pay at third parties, is a fee we're paying for being advertised on their websites, booking engines, ... As you work in that business you should know better than that .....
Concerning the car park, as this is a Public Underground car park, payment is required on the spot. This is well indicated on our website and into the confirmation letter we sent. A Reservation at the car park is recommended in order to guarantee availability, we are happy to arrange this for our guests without any additional fee.
To offer a good and FRESH breakfast buffet, we prefer to refill our buffet as much as needed, in order to guarantee fresh and hot items instead of cold and dehydrated.

Kind regards,
Betty Devos

The other reviews for this hotel were right on, I wish I had paid closer attention. This is not a 4 start hotel; It is in a good location and the staff were nice enough. But the hotel is getting a bit shabby, worn, and tired. It lacked the shine, sparkle, and upholstery of true 4 star hotels. If you are looking for a 4 star - keep looking. If you are ok with a good location and ok rooms, and don't find a better deal elsewhere - then you are all set.

Dear,

Thank your taking the time to write a review.

However I think you review is excessive! According to the last inspection in April 2011 by the Belgium Federation Toerisme Vlaanderen and the Government, our hotel received an renewal off the hotel classification => certified as 4 STAR.
Our hotel can’t shine and sparkle as a new modern hotel, as our hotel is respecting the authentic charm of the history.
On the other hand you found our hotel well located, with good rooms and offering good deals….
What can one ask for more….

We only had one night to stay in Bruges and we chose to stay here with traveller recommendations. It did not disappoint with its high ceilings, artefacts, paintings and a touch of history. Parking is below ground in a public carpark which is just a walk away. The entrance is just out onto the street and close by to the canal, squares and loads of eating places.
The bedroom was on the second floor in an annex, a bit chalet style, beams and not too small. Could have been lighter and airier but it looked over a side street so had nets to cover. The bathroom was enclosed but everything was clean, the bed comfortable and had tv ,fridge etc.
Breakfast was in the main hotel and had a buffet of wide choice. The staff were friendly and it was a lovely break.

Room Tip: Side rooms are a bit gloomy

A lovely hotel near the centre of Bruges. Our standard room was a decent size, beautifully decorated and in a good state of repair. The reception staff were friendly, welcoming, and very helpful. The lady from house keeping responsible for our room was outstanding. The Breakfast buffet was plentiful varied and hot food was always exactly that. The hotel does not serve dinner but there are numerous restaurants just around the corner from the hotel - eating out in Bruges is pricey though. The De Gastro Restaurant in particular is to be recommended. Do not buy a map of Bruges before-hand as the map supplied by the hotel upon check-in is as good as any available commercially. All in all a wonderful break. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

We stayed at the Jan Brito for just one night during a European road trip and were very glad that we did.

The hotel is located in a very central location in Bruge, just 2-3 minute’s walk to many of the city’s landmarks but in a quiet enough road that you feel that you are getting away from it all a bit. The hotel was easy to find and we were able to unload the car right outside before putting the car in the nearby underground car park (pay extra).

Check-in was prompt and easy. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful.

Our room was located on the top floor in the rear of the building accessed via the pleasant courtyard and the peculiar outdoor lift or stairs. Although not large, the room had everything you would need for a short city break and was beautifully designed with nice features including original oak beams in the vaulted roof. The decor is contemporary but also quite unusual (in a good way). Comfortable bed and plenty of wardrobe space. The bathroom was quite large with a powerful shower over the bath and no shortage of hot water. The roof did not have wi-fi. There was a small flat screen TV mounted high up on the wall with a selection of international channels.

The breakfast buffet in the lovely dining room was excellent – a good selection of fresh baked goods, cereals, fruits, meats and cheeses along with a few cooked items. A good choice of teas, coffees and fruit juices.

The hotel appeared to be clean throughout; guestroom, bathroom and common areas. The hotel bar looked very nice although lacking atmosphere (no customers at all). Nice touches throughout the hotel including a basket of umbrellas for customers’ use and a number of old antiques been made use of in a more contemporary way.

We would stay again and we would recommend this hotel to others. It is reasonable value for money (compared to other Bruge hotels) and has more character than most chain hotels.

Dear,
We appreciate you took time to write this kind review . It’s a pleasure to read you had a good time at our hotel and would recommend it to others.

However, we would like to inform you about some aspect why you probably think our hotel is quirky. As our hotel is housed into UNESCO preserved buildings, we had strict rules to follow during the refurbishment to keep as much elements as possible in order to reflect the history.
*For instance our “piculair outdoor lift” has been specially developped as we weren’t allowed to instal a regular elavator into the building , because this could damage the building.
*The wall paper into the room you had, is Art Deco style and relects the 18th Century.
We look forward to welcome you and / or your friend at our hotel.

Kind regards,
Betty Devos
