Here in central Bruges where there are lovely old buildings many people congregate. It is very touristy and the restaurants are rather expensive however it is an excellent place from which to branch out into other interesting areas of the city where there are more reasonable food prices. The horse and carriage rides are very popular and it is a pleasant place to sit and rest and watch activities.

The Markt is the heart of Bruge. Surrounded by beautiful medieval-era buildings and cafes, it is not surprising why it's teeming with tourists.

From the Markt, you can visit the various museums and attractions that surround it like the Belfry and the Historium. A short walk leads you to the Burg, the oldest square in Bruges and more attractions.

However, it is also very touristy. Restaurants and cafes around it are overpriced. If you want affordable meals, be prepared to walk towards the areas near the Begijnhof or make do with a Bratwurst at the lone stand in the square. However, there is the Brasserie Huyze Die Maene which offers a generous serving of spaghetti with meat sauce for a "reasonable" 14 euros if you want an affordable, proper meal at the Markt.

Be also prepared for the aroma of horse manure since this is a major route of the horse carriage tours. Then again, the smell would enhance the feeling of being transported back to the Middle Ages - if not for the tourists and the passing buses.

Take note: Public buses pass by the Markt and it is NOT closed off to motor vehicles. So be careful when crossing.

Unfortunately crowds of tourists who come to the square make it hard for you to move around and enjoy the lovely architecture of the place. Not to be missed, it is a nice place where you can find several chocolate shops with very reasonable prices

This picturesque row of buildings on the Markt is arguably the best known symbol of the city and passing by a least once to snap a photo is probably worth a walk. A few cafes under the green entrances, as we'll as some souvenir shops might also be of interest.

This was my second time visiting this area. Fantastic place to visit. All the buildings are just beautiful with plenty of architecture and history. Many places to shop and eat or take a horse carriage ride. A must visit for anyone visiting Belgium.
