We stayed in the Hotel De Tuilerieen for 2 nights as part of a bike tour. The hotels best feature is it's location which is about 3 to 4 blocks away from Brugges central square. The staff is certainly friendly, and capable, however I would not say the service here is 5 star. The one elevator is painfully slow, and the lobby area is rather small, this establishment is more like an inn rather than a full service hotel. The breakfast was good, however, nothing extraordinary. There is a chocolate fountain, but at 7 am this wasn't a feature I was interested in. The rooms and beds were clean and functional. We were on the top floor where the architecture of the sloped roof has an impact on the feel of the room. The bathrooms were nice size although sometime during out stay our shower door vanished. Apparently there was a loose hinge and they were in the process of replacing it. When I inquired to the management about the door they did offer us another room or the opportunity to shower in another room, but his was not an issue. Actually, we have stayed in many hotels, the Park Hyatt in Washington DC comes to mind, where there are no shower doors at all. I would have no qualms about staying here were I to return to Brugges depending on the rate they were offering.

As it was our 30 year wedding anniversary we researched, hand picked, and paid extra to stay in this hotel. 3 days before our arrival the hotel contacted us to say they could no longer put us up due to a leak and had booked us into a much cheaper hotel which they thought was comparable because it had a swimming pool and sauna. After several emails with Mr Vandenheede we finally compromised on staying 2 nights at De Tuilerieen and one night at the cheaper hotel, but only after I brought to Mr Vandenheede's attention that they did indeed have rooms available at their hotel for the first 2 nights of our 3 night stay. Mr Vandenheede said he would upgrade our room for the 2 nights at the De Tuilerieen and give us a bottle of champagne. At such short notice we agreed to this compromise because quite honestly we just wanted to look forward to our anniversary in Bruges without any hassle. However, we were not upgraded given only the superior room for which we had originally paid. The hotel we were moved to whilst being 4 star was not in a nice area (opposite a tattoo parlour and away from all the museums). The rooms, whilst clean, were comparable to a premier inn.

Mr Vandenheede is uncompromising in his approach to his customers (see previous review from "Drpfa" - misled at check in - 3 weeks ago). We would suggest that he needs to update his customer care skills. The other thing is that we had to request that our luggage was transported to the other hotel on the day of the move this was not offered to us automatically although the hotel have made a big thing of saying this was another thing they offered as compensation.

On to the hotel De Tuilerieen itself: on the positive side the king sized bed and bedding was sumptuous. It is in a great location near to all of the museums we wanted to visit (unlike the cheaper hotel we were sent to.) We were allocated a room at the back of the hotel (room 236) which had an inter connecting door with room 237. Previous guests have commented on the fact that you can hear everything through this door and this is true. The woman next door had a really bad cough and it was like she was in the same room with us. On the other had I am sure she could hear my husband snoring. I'm just glad I took my ear plugs with me.

On arrival in the room it was hot and stuffy and we immediately had to open the windows. Although there is an air conditioning unit in the corner it was very old and inefficient, so we slept with the windows open on both nights which meant that we had a lot of noise to put up with in the early hours (even at the back of the hotel which faced onto the car park). In fact we had a very poor quality of sleep because it was so hot and stuffy, this was May so goodness knows what it is like in the height of summer.

Cleanliness was also an issue in our room, We found a piece of broken glass on the floor (brought to the attention of the assistant manager) marked paintwork, lots of dust and a discarded slipper left by a previous guest. The settee in the bedroom had lots of stains on it. The bathroom was full of chipped tiles, some of which had been painted over in order to disguise the glue and chips. The bath was very badly stained, and the soap dish in the shower was also chipped.

The breakfast was of a very good standard, but then you are paying 25 euros per person, and our only comment would be that they should cook the eggs fresh to order for this price rather than only offering scrambled eggs that are kept warm for several hours.

Given all of this we had a lovely romantic stay in Bruges which is a great place to visit and a brilliant meal at Park Restaurant who really looked after us. The Belgium people are lovely and the staff in the tourist information office in the main square were extremely helpful and we got good value from the 20 euro museum pass they recommended (the concierge at the hotel was unable to help us with this - why?)

On the whole to staff in the hotel were extremely friendly and welcoming but we feel that the hotel is living on theglories of famous guests who have previously stayed there.

Room Tip: Do not accept either room rooms 236 and 237 with the inter connecting door as you can hear everything from your neighbours even the tiniest sneeze!

Dear Madam,

Many thanks for your review.
We regret that this situation happened.
A few days before your arrival, we discovered a leak in our hotel.
The wooden floor in several rooms was damaged. We could not fix this situation on time.
For this reason we contacted you 5 days before your arrival date with the following proposition:
We proposed you to stay the complete duration of your stay in another hotel and offered you as compensation a voucher to come back in the future for 2 nights, free of charge ( room, including breakfast + 1 bottle of champagne during your stay )
You declined this offer, so we proposed you to stay the first 2 nights in our hotel ( because we were not fully booked on the first 2 nights ) and to go the alternative hotel for your last night. You accepted this offer. During your stay we offered a complimentary upgrade to a suite ( size 40m² ) , we arranged a complimentary bottle of champagne during your stay and when you checked out we arranged the transfer of your luggage to the other hotel.
Our breakfast buffet is a large buffet with fresh food, chocolate fountain, ...
The cost is indeed 25.00 EUR / person / day, however we don't think this is an extraordinary charge for what you get. All luxury hotels offer a similar breakfast buffet for even a higher fee.
Because we think customer care is very important and we want that our guests feel at home, we offered you also a card with another attention to compliment you with your 30th wedding anniversary.
I'm very happy to hear that you loved our staff and I'll pass this message to our staff.

With kind regards,

Vandenheede Kristof

Read the great reviews online and also the hotel home page. I was really looking forward to staying in this famous hotel as part of the trip with my husband for our wedding anniversary. However, I was very disappointed.

We were led to a room outside of the main hotel (room 441), the room looked like it used to be a horses stable and the bed was where the horses used to sleep. This room looked very different to those beautiful rooms portrayed on the hotel website. You would expect a luxury hotel to have a proper hairdryer rather than a flimpsy hairdryer attached to bathroom wall. Furthermore, it was sellotaped at the exit from the wall and also the tubing fell off when i was blow drying my hair. The bath products were not very luxury either. Worse still our bath overlooked the main road so we had to have the blackout blinds down when we were having a shower or bath otherwise all will be on view to passer bys!

On the positive note, however, the room was clean and bed was comfortable. Also because we were in the 'stables' at the back of the hotel, it was very quiet. However, I have my reservations about staying again because of the amount of money I paid and the room i got was not what had been advertised on the website. Not what i thought a luxury hotel would be.

Room Tip: Avoid being led to a room outside the main hotel if possible.

We came with my son and his family in May 2014. It was our Christmas gift from my son. The hotel was splendid from all aspects. Fabulous comfortable four poster beds. Enormous luxury bathrooms. Private sitting rooms too for each room. Perfect silence all night was fully appreciated. Secure parking is also a great advantage meaning all the attractions are within walking distance for even elderly people such as us. No need to worry about finding parking space or the security of your new expensive car. The tasteful decor was a pleasure to behold and the staff efficient and friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to return. Well done Alys for finding and booking this hotel for us. You found us a jewel. It's nice to know Jools Holland and Jeremy Clarkson share our taste! PH

Room Tip: Room 442 was absolutely silent at night - very important to me. No view of the city though.

The Hotel De Tuilerieen is a cozy and small hotel very close to the Bruges Grand Place. The best about this hotel is the location. It is in front of the main canal with a very nice view. The staff is nice and the room is very comfortable. The decor is classic and makes you feel you are in a castle. The breakfast is delicious.
