“Great location, great bar - decent rooms”
Reviewed 9 January 2011

At first glance, you'd have no idea Charlie Rocket's is a hostel. It's definitely a bar first off! You have to check in at the bar, which isn't really a problem.

My friend and I stayed in a dorm with four other people. The biggest problem was the fact that we were three different groups, yet there were only two keys to the room. One of the groups would leave and not turn the key in, so if they weren't back when we were, we'd have to sit and wait at the bar.

Not that that was a huge problem, considering the bar was great! Pool tables weren't too expensive, and drinks were also decently priced. Great for solo travelers... very easy to meet people.

The shower in our dorm didn't work well at all (it kept turning off), but the ones in the hall were fine. I'd definitely return to this hostel!

Do yourself a favour and pay a little extra and go somewhere else! I've stayed in many hostels over the year as a traveller and this is by far the worst. There was only one key for each room which meant that for the entire two days we were in Bruges, our dorm room remained unlocked as no one knew where the key was or who had it. Poor service as the staff also work in the bar downstairs (I think this would have contributed to the key problem as you were supposed to leave the key at reception each time you left the room but of course if no one is at the reception....) Horrible showers - after 10 seconds they turn off automatically. Basically, we felt unsafe during our stay, luckily we had minimal belongings as it was just an overnight stay but if you are travelling with a suitcase or larger backpack, I would stay somewhere else if you wanted to keep your belongings! I even felt I had to lock my bag to the bed which is something I've never had to do before in a hostel. Only good point was the location - about a 2 min walk to the main market square and it's quite easy to find from the train station.

This place, just like everybody else has mentioned, is first a bar and then a hostel. I only stayed there with a friend for 2 nights and thank God we didnt stay longer. The room was dirty and so were the beds. It was the worst hostel experience ever. People stay in the bar till around 4 am so it was impossible for me to sleep at all. You can hear everything!!! People a drunk, puking all over and super loud! The only good thing about this hostel is the location. I am not a very demanding person when it comes to hostels/hotels, just the basic would of been fine but this hostel was really bad. The people in charge of this hostel are far more interested in their convos with their friends instead of attending their customers. I honestly don't recommend this hostel to anyone!!!

We travelled through Europe for three months this year, and I have to say without a doubt this is the WORST place we stayed. Apart from a great location, there is nothing else good to say about this place. Our room was dirty, smelt like cigarette smoke, the bathrooms were disgusting, and as it is above a bar, it is very noisy (bar is open till 3am every night from memory). The rooms are incredible hot (stayed in summer), and the only rescue is having your window open (not good with noise from the bar below). On our second night we were awoken to someone above us vomiting out of there window above, which then landed on our window ledge and splashed in – nice!!!! We also didn’t feel that safe there. Felt like drunk people from the bar below were constantly trying to get into your room (trying there luck to see if any doors were unlocked). Your room key has to be returned when you leave the building, but the keys are on display for everyone to see, and anyone can ask for any key, so not great security practises. Would not recommend under any circumstances.

I am unfortunate enough to have stayed at this hostel, and to be honest I thought it was one of the worst hostels I have ever stayed at before.

We stayed for christmas as part of a christmas tour and would never have picked this place if given the choice, we stayed in a 6 bed room, the beds were dirty, (I dont think any of the sheets are actually washed). Almost 50% of our tour bus came down sick before the end of the holiday with some form of stomach bug - Not pretty, so a lot of us were looking after the sick, this of course ruined the holiday for pretty much everyone on the tour. Some of the toilets had no facilities to wash hands which probably didnt help matters.

Overall - as mentioned by other reviewers, this is a bar first and a hostel 2nd (and its a very distant 2nd!)

I would recommend people to steer clear!

What a [--] Hole - The rooms had not been cleaned - semen stains on sheets, holes in sheets, cold showers. In the bar getting a drink was a challenge, it seemed to be more important for the staff to chat to friends than serve customers. Beware of the Managers boyfriend who whilst he is not threatening customers, visits the toilets with other girls and comes out fists raised when anyone tries the door - no engaged signs to see. Could not wait to leave - try St Christophers Hostel Inn ( not far away) - it is "GREAT"

So this is not really a hotel, it's a youth hostel. And as with any youth hostels, it's not what an average well-paid traveller would expect. True, it's interestingly decorated (American road-signs, fuel pumps, rock-style... things), but you need to be very lucky to get a room you'd like. It actually is clean down there, but sometimes you'll need to get a good mosquito repellent. And if you're unlucky, well, better get some noise stopper. The good thing is, this hostel is really close to the Old Town centre, including really good chocolatiers.
