“Excellent hotel in a very good location”
Reviewed 16 October 2012

Booked our stay through Eurostar and we were not disappointed. Scary stairs to the first floor in the main building for the old or infirm, or those returning from a beer tasting! The owner was very helpful, booking a restaurant for us and taking time to explain the Bruges card and the museum card. Couldn't fault the breakfast, plenty of freshly prepared fruit, cheeses, meats and pastries. Very close to the city centre, would definitely use it again.

We travelled with Lynn H who has already given a rightly glowing review of Hotel Anselmus, it is perfectly located with everything you need a short walk away, the rooms are spacious, and well presented, we were at the back of the hotel (but also facing onto a road) and enjoyed peace and quiet at night.

The owners were unobtrusive whilst always being available when required, they were very helpful and welcoming, the breakfast was varied and well presented, plentiful and always fresh and appetising, we both thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Bruges and would highly recommend staying at Hotel Anselmus.

Thank you to the owners for being so kind and welcoming.

we booked through Eurostar website.

We stayed at the Hotel Anselmus in September 2012, we booked it as part of a package through Eurostar after first checking the reviews on this site. The hotel’s location is a major plus point, being only a short walk from the Markt and Burg and the main shopping areas of Brugge, although it was a good 20 minute or so walk from the train station, which might be difficult for some people with cases/children etc, so a taxi might be a better option.

On arrival we were greeted by the lady owner who checked us in, and gave us a Welkom@Brugge card which allowed us to obtain a small discount on several local attractions. Our room number 207, was well appointed with two easy chairs along with a desk and small wardrobe, a wall mounted television and a slightly garish picture on the wall, the room was spotlessly clean. The bathroom was again spotlessly clean but the shower was set very low down which made using it a bit tricky. The door to the bathroom was a flimsy concertinaed door, which did not really offer much in the way of privacy. We were a little disappointed to find that our double was just two single beds pushed close together, our room was in fact a triple with another single bed, which I’m glad to report remained un-used throughout our stay 

The breakfast was the usual continental affair with bread, cheese, cold meats etc, along with cereal, croissants, toast and fruit and the offer of a boiled egg and coffee or tea when we sat down. The food was well presented and perfectly adequate for what we needed.

The owners were not overly friendly and did not intrude, but were perfectly fine. We did have a noise issue on two of the mornings during our three night stay, the person or persons above appeared to be constantly moving about at 5:30-6:00 which rather spoiled which what should have been a restful lie in.

All in all the Anselmus Hotel is an excellent base from which to explore the beautiful city of Brugge and beyond.

This is a real gem of a hotel situated perfectly right in the heart of( but quietly) in Bruges. It has a welcoming, unobtrusively helpful style which perfectly matched our needs. It is a family run establishment, the owners of which really did everything they could to make our stay a good one. I found out the night before we were due to arrive that there are steep stairs in some parts of the hotel...I contacted them only hours before we arrived to explain I have a slight mobility problem...I then had a return E-Mail from them to confirm we were booked into a ground floor room which was absolutely perfect.
The rooom was sparklingly clean, spacious and well equipped with two arm chairs, wardrobe, desk, en-suite and twin beds which were exceptionally comfortable. It had two large casement windows overlooking the street which was not at all noisy.
The hotel itself is furnished and decorated in a most interesting way. Some really beautiful carved heavy oak chairs, wonderful pottery and ceramics as well as paintings in the Flemish style and sparkling chandeliers in several rooms. There is a lovely lounge area where various drinks, both alcoholic or hot can be arranged and served by the owner.
Breakfasts were really fabulous. NOT an average 'Continental' but a huge array of cheeses, hams, fruits, pastries, juice, yogourt and breads were served every morning with the offer of freshly boiled eggs also available. The tea was lovely and strong( I hate weak tea!) and fresh coffee was replenished as requested. It made a lovely start to each day and was available for a very generous length of time each morning.
The postion of the Hotel Anselmus is perect for exploring the old town of Bruges on foot or cycling. It is very near the main squares and everything we wanted during our three day visit was within very easy reach. The owner gave us maps and help to identify places we would like to visit and organised taxis for us very efficiently.
We loved our stay here and would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a convenient hotel with touches of luxury right in the centre of Bruges! It is gorgeous!!

Room Tip: Steep stairs in some parts, but a request for a ground floor room was efficiently organised

Stayed 4 nights in October 2012 and couldn't fault anything. Perfectly situated for exploring the city but in quiet side street. Our double en suite room was spacious and well equipped. Good breakfast in bright and airy room looking out on to charming courtyard. You could pay a lot more and do a lot worse!

This is a beautiful little hotel right in the centre of Bruges, walking distance to the Market place (where it all happens!) and easy access to everywhere else.
The room we were in (a twin) was roomy, clean and comfortable, with a great ensuite.
The breakfast room was charming, overlooking a lovely little courtyard which could be used in warmer weather.
Other reviews mentioned the steep and narrow stairs, which there were plenty of but you have to remember the age of the building and ask for a low or ground floor if stairs are a problem.
I highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there again myself.

Room Tip: Ask for low/ground floor if stairs are a problem.

The Anselmus Hotel is a brilliant family run hotel in a quiet back street just off the main square. On entering you had a sense of homeliness and that's exactly how it was. The husband and wife team who ran it along with their staff were charming and very helpful - they provided maps with walking routes marked out and discount cards for entry to museums and restaurants. We followed the marked route on two days and found this showed us little gems which we may otherwise have missed. The hotel itself was very clean with tastefully decorated, large rooms and what must be one of the best breakfasts in Bruges! We would not hesitate to go back or to recommend it to our friends and family. Great visit...

Room Tip: Central rooms were very quiet but all had good double-glazing anyway.
