Owner description: Start your visit to Bruges in the Historium: a wonderful historical-experience attraction that takes you back in time to the Golden Age of Bruges. Cinematic sets, with music and special effects, propel you into a love story, based on Jan Van Eyck’s painting ‘Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele'. For anyone who wants a taste of virtual reality: the VR Experience takes you on a virtual tour of medieval Bruges. You travel back in time and get to explore the historical city interactively. The Historium is housed in a historical building on the market square, where the Waterhalle once stood. The Waterhalle was the central shipping entrepot of the thriving mercantile centre Bruges. Bruges was renowned for its luxury textiles and clothing. But the art of Bruges was also highly prized: precious metals, manuscripts, miniatures and of course, the painted panels of Flemish Primitives, such as Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck. In the attraction and the VR Experience, the Waterhalle is superbly reconstructed. You can follow the story in your own language on an audio guide (10 languages). After your visit, you can enjoy a nice Belgian beer or other refreshments in the Duvelorium Grand Beer Cafe... with a panoramic view on the market square. Historium Brugge is open daily from 10h00 a.m. – 6h00 p.m. (tickets until 5h00 p.m.). Accessible for all ages – Family Trail included. Audio guides in 10 different languages.

We started our two day visit of Brugge with this museum. Great for the entire family. Excellent description of the golden century of this city. Being situated on the Markt, it's a good start, with a few other interesting things to visit closeby.

This is well worth a visit. It is very different to most 'museums' and takes through a series of rooms depicting Bruges hundreds of years ago. You even get to experience the smells of the time. You walk round with headphones to hear the commentary and the views of the Markt from the balcony are great.

Wonderful town to walk around as it is a "new" old town of Belgium intentionally restored to old gothic. Many shops and restaurants as well as views of old belgium

Was not what I was expecting it was better. Walk through and follow the story of Jan Van Eycks apprentice Jacob and the woman he loved whilst learning about historic Bruges. After the walk through there is various bit too look at and listen more about using the handy headphone set they provide in your chosen language :) step out onto the panoramic terrace to get a lovely view of the Markt square. Once finished looking around head down to the Duvelorium to try some of their Duvel beers. All in all a lovely experience

I was unsure about paying to go into this museum as it sounded a bit too much like a theme park for my liking, but in fact it was a very original way to learn about Medieval Bruges - good for kids and adults alike. Once through the 'experience' bit, there's a very good exhibition with lots of accessible information, and a great view from the Terrace. Definitely recommended - worth the entry cost.
