Owner description: Start your visit to Bruges in the Historium: a wonderful historical-experience attraction that takes you back in time to the Golden Age of Bruges. Cinematic sets, with music and special effects, propel you into a love story, based on Jan Van Eyck’s painting ‘Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele'. For anyone who wants a taste of virtual reality: the VR Experience takes you on a virtual tour of medieval Bruges. You travel back in time and get to explore the historical city interactively. The Historium is housed in a historical building on the market square, where the Waterhalle once stood. The Waterhalle was the central shipping entrepot of the thriving mercantile centre Bruges. Bruges was renowned for its luxury textiles and clothing. But the art of Bruges was also highly prized: precious metals, manuscripts, miniatures and of course, the painted panels of Flemish Primitives, such as Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck. In the attraction and the VR Experience, the Waterhalle is superbly reconstructed. You can follow the story in your own language on an audio guide (10 languages). After your visit, you can enjoy a nice Belgian beer or other refreshments in the Duvelorium Grand Beer Cafe... with a panoramic view on the market square. Historium Brugge is open daily from 10h00 a.m. – 6h00 p.m. (tickets until 5h00 p.m.). Accessible for all ages – Family Trail included. Audio guides in 10 different languages.

“Great way to understand the History of Bruges”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

This is an attraction that gives you a HIstory lesson without you realising it. At the end you understand the importance of Bruges as a trading centre and the exhbition which follows the show helps to consolidate this. With some changes to the story it would be even greater, but that is not to say that it is not worth a visit now. The technology used is spot on, the audio headsets with different languages means that everyone enjoys the experince (indeed I am not sure how each language manages to lipsync to the characters mouths). This is ideal for older children and adults as a first port of call to fit Bruges into context.

“The potential is there, but...”
Reviewed 1 May 2014 via mobile

Although the idea itself is good (having you take a journey back in time to old Brugge), we left feeling that with this general idea they could have had a much more interesting exhibition. If the sets had been more similar to the familiar places we see nowadays and the story had been better developed this attraction would be unmissable. As it is, if you have a few extra hours in Brugge and have explored everything else you had in mind, Historium isn't a bad option.
There's also a balcony with a gorgeous view of the square.

“Pointless. Don't bother unless you're just trying to stay our of rain”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

I can't believe we bothered. Only reason we went in was because it was cold and wet outside, and we had a Bruge City Card and I wish we didn't. I would NOT pay to see this. It's attempt to showcase the history of Bruge around their 'Golden Age' is clumsy and poor - and it's not because it is just lost in translation, poor translation cannot disguise poor dialogue or way story is built. It was boring, and salt in the wound was that the bar wasn't even open when we finished the dreary journey!

“Brings history to life”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

This place is modern and very informative. When you walk in there is a shop, a tourist info centre and the Historium itself.

If you are here for a few days and intend to hit all of the sights, do yourself a favour and before you do anything else buy yourself a "Love Brugge" card for either 48 or 72hrs (starts from when you first use the card) from the tourist info at the Historium (see www.bruggecitycard.be). A 48hr pass for an adult is 40 Euros and the 72hr pass is 45 Euros.

It entitles you to free entry to the mass majority of tourist sites in Brugge i.e. museums and boat trips and you get a free comprehensive guide in English.

We bought this and got into the Historium (11 euros each) for free. You get a headset and you walk around the museum which has 7 rooms you walk thru with CGI shows in each, taking you through a story and showing you practical and entertaining facts about the city thru time. Really enjoyed it. You can also gain access onto the balcony and enjoy the lovely views of the Markt.

Great for all ages.

“An excellent display”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

This was an excellent sound and visual experience depicting the Hanseatic Golden Age of Bruges in the 15th century. Well worth the money and accompanied by the weirdest haunting music as you walk through the exhibit. Very good!
