“A Gastronomic Destination”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2014

This lovely place is listed under Bruges but to be honest it is really quite a ways away out in the country. That suited my wife and I fine as we were totally burnt out on the masses of humanity in Bruges.

My take on this place is it is a great place to go for a gastronomic experience. I think the rooms are nice for the price. My complaints on the room were they were very hot and the pillows were way too hard for my personal taste. But that is a personal thing.

The food is another subject. Jan de Storkerij, who is owner along with his wife Ingrid, is a chef who does a ton of artisanal food preparation. He smokes his own salmon and eel. He prepares his own hams in a variety of ways including slow aged ham. He makes his own pates and head cheeses. The breads are baked in house daily. Jan has a very deft hand with deep frying.

They serve a fixed price dinner. We had it with the beer and wine pairing and really enjoyed ourselves. But it was the breakfast buffet that was head and shoulders better than just about anything I've seen except in places that cost much, much more. All the smoked and cured foods I mentioned above, the breads, a fantastic choice of cheeses. These are things that are very hard to come by in our food world of greater and greater government regulation. I would come back specifically for this experience.

Amazingly friendly staff, always willing to help and improve your stay. The restaurants suggested were fantastic and well worth a visit.
The rooms were a little dated but were very clean and tidy. Would definitely stay again and recommend to friends.

We chose this hotel based on other reviews on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed.
The hotel is remote and we would have struggled to find it without sat nav but it was a gem when we got there. The first impression was a cosy location set amongst beautiful scenery with spring flowers and sheep to the front of it, very tranquil.
We were greeted by Ingrid, offered a drink, given maps of the local areas, tips for parking and places to visit. The room was comfortable with everything we needed. We had taken heed of previous comments regarding no tea/coffee making facilities so took our own travel kettle. The bathroom was well equipped and we were able to control the temperature in both bedroom and bathroom to suit our needs.
Breakfast was a wonderful array of home and locally produced foods with plenty of choice to suit all dietary requirements. We didn't benefit from the dinner option but I'm sure it would be superb quality, Ingrid mentioned the house speciality is fish.
We stayed for two nights, visited Ostend, Bruges and Ypres on our way home, all within very easy distance. I would highly recommend the hotel.

My husband and I enjoyed a great long weekend at this hotel! Our favorite part was the dinner, for an additional charge you get the ultimate in gourmet meals. Starting with an apertif you get a small sampling of great treats before dinner followed by a tremendous meal prepared right in front of you by a superb chef! All local ingredients, so lots of fish from the North Sea. You will be stuffed, but very satisfied! The location is great, close to Brugge, Oostende, the North Sea, but very quiet and remote, so very relaxing. We enjoyed visiting the towns during the day, but coming back for the great dinners. The breakfast was also fabulous!

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Honey Lips room with a great jacuzzi!

First of all, the hospitality was great. We arrived and we were offered a drink and had a nice little chat with the owner. After seeing our room we went to the restaurant and they cooked us a magnificent meal. It seemed like everybody was enjoying themselves. And remarkable: they offered other meals to the young kids (who weren't that into fish). I even had the chance to experience the kitchen myself, and that was a nice experience! I can only recommend the place but you still got to see it with your own eyes and have your own conversations to believe it's worth every penny!!

Room Tip: Take the caravan!!

Top service, close to the sea and best of all, the food is unbelieveble good!
You can just relax for a few days and with a jacuzzi in your room is that the best way for relaxing. Very friendly host the owners are so close to the people that makes the difference.

very hospitable, good breakfast, real quite area; you need a car in order to do some sightseeing; Sauna is private and very nice. Room is ultra clean and when you enter it they've got candles, some gentle music, ... it's the perfect place to relax!

Room Tip: The 'Gipsy express' has its own jacuzzi and everything you need is included. Great value!
