“Second time around so disappointing”
Reviewed 2 February 2006

Having stayed in this hotel in February 2000 we immediately fell in love with it. The rooms very spacious and exceptionally clean and each room had a welcoming box of chocolates. Tea and coffee was free whenever you asked for it and the location perfect for seeing both side of Bruges. The overall ambience of the hotel was excellent, the owner and his staff very friendly and the barman Claude made our stay memorable. So much so we sent my sister here in 2003 for her birthday and she too had a memorable stay. We have just come back from a 3 night stay with my parents and were very disappointed. We have assumed the hotel is under new ownership as the hotel is very dowdy, rooms although comfortable were not clean and smelled heavily of smoke. The breakfast was poor - most mornings there was limited availability of hams, cheeses and the fresh fruit bowl had rotten fruit in it. They ran out of beer on the second night and on the third night I witnessed the 'bar person' taking lumps of cork out of a glass of wine with his fingers and then passing it to a customer. We heard customers complain and staff seemed indifferent. So sad as this really was an exceptional hotel. I know we won't be going back again.

Obviously as this is a review from 2003 things can change,so one can only speak as found at the time, the rooms in this hotel vary enormously in size ,and all are different, ours (on the top floor)was huge with a big comfortable bed and lots of storage space, the bathroom was average, but everything was clean. The breakfast which was inclusive in our deal was a buffet with just about everything and of high quality(judging by some of the other reviews things could have changed?)and certainly large amounts were being constantly being replenished at the first signs of need.
The fact it has no restaurant is not a problem in a compact city with more than its share of good restaurants at all prices ,and the better ones are superb, its well located with everything within minutes on foot in this fascinating city,on the strength of our visit i would highly recommend it,but as with all hotels and restaurants 6 months can be a long time so it pays to check as up to date as possible ,i hope it is still as good.

We stayed at this hotel for a long weekend in Dec 2005. The hotel was a lot more than i had expected, the staff were very friendly & extremley helpful.

I was particularly impressed with the rooms as i had read mixed reviews about this hotel. The room was spacious and clean. We had a nice view of the gardens too. The only bad thing i could say about the hotel was the bathroom towels. They were very thin and looked like they were about to fall apart!

The breakfast was ok.

I think the best part of this hotel was the bar. It had a beautiful fire and it was a great place to come back to and relax after a hard day walking through the Christmas markets! The bar man was also very friendly and entertaining.

The hotel is in a great location and very close to the Chocolate museum and about 5-10min walk from the main square. We booked the hotel via Opodo, they were the cheapest, about £160 for 2 nights including breakfast.
I would definitley recommend this hotel & Brugge itself is a fantastic city!

We have just returned from a week in Bruges (Brugge) Belgium. Our hotel, the Relais Oud Huis Amsterdam was excellent. The site couldn't be improved - it is adjacent to one of the original canals dating from the 13th century. It is about a four minute walk from either the Markt or the Burg - the two squares that are the center of the old city - so there's great access without the noise of facilities immediately on one of the squares.
The hotel itself is several mansions linked together and adapted for use as a hotel. The foundations of part of the building are 13th c - most of the hotel spaces are 15th and 16th c and the rooms are filled with carefully selected and beautiful antique pieces so its very much in keeping with the atmosphere of the Medieval city. But it is also has totally modern bathrooms and beds - so, the best of both worlds. In addition to the canal setting, there are two gardens - one private for guests and one adjacent to the hotel bar and not limited to guests - (the Bartender is a hoot - do check him out when you go)
The staff and service were superb - they are fluent in several languages, very knowledgeable of their city and committed to assuring that every guest has an exellent experience. All requests were immediately attended to with follow up as appropriate and the staff were genuinely interested in the needs of every guest.
On any future trip to Bruges - or Brussels, we'll definitely stay with this hotel again.

While our hotel room was quite nice -- spacious, tastefully decorated, on quiet canal -- we had a bad experience with service. On check-in, we were told that breakfast would be included. This was a change from our previous correspondence, and we were delighted. However on check-out my husband and I found that we were charged a cost of Euro 20 per person. (And the breakfast itself was mediocre.)

When we told the hotel staff of the error in charging us, they harkened back to the written correspondence with no acknowledgement that the person at reception might have made a mistake.

This inadequate response left a very bad taste in my mouth, and not just from the food.

We spent 3 nights at the Oud Huis Amsterdam Hotel late April 2005. It was our second time to Bruges, having stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Tuilereen in Oct 2004.
BAD POINTS: I was disappointed with the quality of the rooms - we had 2 Superior Privilege rooms- one on the 1st floor #10 and the other on the ground floor overlooking the garden #7. Room #7 in particular was grubby and dark. The hotel overall looked shabby-chic with the emphasis on the shabby!
When we arrived and left, there was nobody to assist with the luggage. On one occasion, the chambermaid barged into the room without knocking and quickly left again without apology!
The breakfasts were okish at E12.
Good quiet yet central location; excellent restuarants close by; the breakfasts were okish at 12Euros.
Overall, I would NOT recommend this hotel for those who are looking for special service or surroundings- the hotel felt like a standard 3*- they need to focus on getting their rooms especially carpets cleaned and upgraded; the Hotel Tuilereen would be a better bet!

Stayed three nights room only at the begining of March. Good location, quiet but still central over looking a canal. Good sized room furnished with antique furniture, luxurious drapes and lovely mood lighting, all very much in keeping with the atmosphere of Bruges. Bathroom a little disappointing but still fine. Towels were a bit thin and worn. Public areas like a private home with fires and cosy candle lit corners. Weather was freezing so fires a welcoming touch after sight seeing and shopping. Staff charming and helpful, carpark a bit of a hike from hotel but secure and private. Breakfast was advertised at 20 euros which was a rip off. However, during stay was told it had been reduced to 12 euros which was more reasonable. Breakfasts nothing special but adequate. Have always stayed in the Sofitel while in Bruges but on this fourth visit found a good deal at this hotel and decided to have a change. Sofitel is anonymous, this is full of character and will return.
